Just came across news that LG is planning to use software in their smart TV's  that will use AI to analyze viewers emotional reactions to TV content and personalize ads according to that.

LG is partnering with company Zenapse in order to use their software for that marketing strategy.

Yeah OP, I tried to understand the whole thing and how they plan to make it work. It's quite interesting that one of the biggest (if not the biggest) TV producing company is looking for ways to improve their smart TV products. But from what I read in the link you shared, they actually plan on analyzing the emotional conditions of the contents that viewers watch frequently, which will then determine the type of ads they will receive. If I'm not wrong, it's just like getting a football related ads while watching a football game, but I really hope those ads won't be the annoying type.

New advancement keeps coming, and it's good to see LG leading the race.

I was wrong in the first post, as I wrote that TV will analyse person's emotional reaction, but it is case that it will analyse TV content.

Still it is unclear how will it differentiate different users, when it could be the case that few members of family will probably use that TV.

I'm not so optimistic about this technology. When I buy TV I buy it so I can watch TV. And not for TV to watch over me.

But I want to believe that such implementation would be optional, because not everyone would want to get unnecessary and distracting ads popping out of nowhere. Maybe there could be an option to either activate or deactivate the AI ads assistance mode (not sure what to call it now).

All I know is advertisers are putting ads on TV shows based on the rating of the shows and the TV has no control over it because it's station-based; the station is the one that broadcasts the ads.
This is very interesting and may change the landscape of marketing and advertising on TV.
Honestly, I don't like the idea; it's like they are making their watcher their product, just like what social media online is doing to their platform users. They are selling their users to their advertisers through their algorithm.

They want to use AI to analyze the interests of users and group them into different sections which will be used for advertisement. These users will now be bombarded with target ads based on their interests. It's not a bad idea if these ads will be beneficial to me, you could get a good service or product from these ads. But if it becomes a distraction or burden, I would simply deactivate this AI tool in the LG television. Just as a user said, the business I have with TV is to watch movies, sports, news, and others, I don't have much interest in any other function.

Is good to see a company trying to improve on the previous excitement they usually give to users, before it wasn't common to see TV in a smart form but now almost all the TV are made smart so that people don't depend on any other channel to be given them movies to watch because they can now watch whichever movies they choose. And this new development is coming from LG company, is good but how to make it work proper is what I don't no because you have just made an observation of how it could read when there are more than one persons watching it, perhaps after they have set it running we would no how effective it could read and analyze viewer emotions.

I could see the Chine government, the government of North Korea and even Russia turning their urban centers into dystopian landscapes where all citizens are always under surveillance by a powerful AI which only serves to the authority of the presidency.
Though, in more liberal and free countries I think AI will widely used to develop sexual robots, improve targeted advertising and even create robots capable of replacing most of the labor within the supply chain of big companies, like Amazon or Apple.
It depends what citizens are able to tolerate or fight back against, in the United States and the European Union there will be definitely a struggle in order for their republic not to become dystopian hellholes where privacy would.not exist any longer.

I think its only a matter of time before your statement in the OP is actually the case
and we will all be monitored in order to exploit us and feed us nonsense we dont need.

Anyway, there is little we can do because eventually we will need to replace TV's for
this new tech. We will need to be able to disable the camera and microphones they
are supplied with.

As you say I want to watch TV and not be analysed and monitored. Another down
side of AI, big tech will use it against us for their own good.

You can turn this feature of by disabling ACR. I have done that, but problem is now that it seems like some apps like plex require it to be active.

I honestly haven't even read their ToS on that, because it was auto-translated to nonsensical text. I can still use it by connecting my laptop to it however, or using a playstation or something else to run the apps.

This is a good point. Whether or not it's an infringement on privacy is about how pervasive and necessary these highly dangerous but slightly useful features of TV become. A TV reading your micro movements while you think you're in private but aren't could give details about your most personal opinions like who you're attracted to, to a corporate marketing department. They could then sell those opinions to the highest bidder. Which, that would be the point in this case but if someone isn't aware of that it would be a privacy violation.

So your smart TV would know who you're attracted to and by how much, how sexual deviant you are, how morally deviant you are by looking at your responses to a crime scene in an advertisement, and so on. Its a different world we'd be living in if this kind of technology is pervasive.

And would you trust you have total control over that feature? Even if that was turned off, the possibility of being watched all the time would be still present. Governments have already done it in the past (and probably are still doing it by now), so what would prevent a technology company from doing the same?

In every cases, I don't think we have much choice nowadays. We are being watched through cameras on the streets and smartphones (including our own). Our data isn't protected, as for every services we need to hire it's necessary to go through KYC process. After all, if we think carefully about all of it, the new LG TV AI feature must be the lesser of the problems.

I could see the UK government turning their urban centers into dystopian landscapes where all citizens are always under surveillance by a powerful AI which only serves to the authority of the UK. They already have the cameras set up, and next, they just set up the AI. And after that, they put the emotional reporting system in to determine how everyone is feeling about everyone else around them. That is why the government is only supposed to be searching with search warrants to investigate specific people suspected of specific crimes.

At this junction, I feel AI advancements are needed somewhere else instead of on our TVs, where we're supposed to just watch something to relax. We already have similar features on social media, using algorithms to curate feeds based on what we watch. I think this is unnecessary since we already have similar experiences on our phones.

I feel like AI should be applied elsewhere. If AI is used on TV, the option to turn it off or have more control over settings should be there. But then I feel the setting would not give full control , it might reset when you turn off your TV requiring users to re-enable it each time.

I'm concerned that if AI tracks our emotions and viewing habits, it might limit what we see , what if I'm interested in other contents. Instead of just suggesting more of what I've already watched, I feel the inclusion is not necessary.

I don't think I need something like an AI on my TV, the company I'm working has been tracking all his employees through CCTV and so are the whole neighborhood I'm living and when I get home check my social media feeds and still get tracked the only thing that I don't want to be tracked is when I am watching TV, sleeping and having a shower.
We should minimize all these tracking devices in our lives, so I prefer my old TV even though it needs replacement.
