I came accross few members who are having temporal signature bans on bpip.org and decided to visit their profiles. To my surprise, their was no difference between them and unbanned users who are just offline since their "Current status" shows just "Offline" and there was no indication of their ban appearing on their profile summary. This has caused a perceived difficulty like the one below: Guys. Please bear with me. I haven't been very active on this thread for a couple of reasons: - The BPIP extension isn't working anymore on my setup. This prevents me from immediately recognising banned users. Of course, I don't want to send merits to them. Waiting for a fix.
Hence the need for an easier way to detect banned users. This got me thinking that if by any chance the bpip.org and other (if any) third-party site helping with this information stops working, there would be no easy way to detect banned users. I think this fix can be added directly in the profile summary as stipulated below: Take for example the account below which is under ban Instead of the "Current Status" being just "Offline" or "Online" We can have this version And it would be easier to know if a user is banned or not simply by checking his profile summary. I believe a fix like this would help Fillipone continue his good services with a bit of ease and it would also make the forum profile summary a bit richer. What are your thoughts on this?.

You can raise your concern and ask for a SMF patch in Little things that bug you/me about the forum. PowerGlove will take a look and add it to his to-do list (or not), but make sure you check whether it was asked there before. You seem to understand it incorrectly, users can be banned but can be online. Banned users can log in accounts, read forum posts and are Online, but only are not allowed to post.

Cool, going through the thread now, would raise it up if it's alien to the suggestion therein. Thanks. the list of all forum members (who have not been banned) The forum won't tell you that. Best I can do: combine all usernames with banned users. the same question had already been asked on the @powerglove thread, so we believe that the problem we be fixed, because identifying banned accounts is one of the difficult things in the forum. No my dear, that question is asking about compiling names of banned users which searching through the compilation can still be a bit much of a work, while my suggestion is displaying it right in the profile of any banned user to be seen easily.

What are your thoughts on this?.
You've thought well on this, but I suggest it should be on the major bans only, and not on the signature bans to avoid stereotyping them even as they try to improve themselves. The major banned users' profiles may indicate the banning for merits not to be sent to them, it's a waste of time and resources. Aside from that, I don't see any use for that because the banned accounts would be forced to be dormant.

As far as I know, Admin doesn't want non-Mods to see who's banned or not. Years ago, a Mod gave me a list of banned users as seen from his Mod account, and later asked me to delete it again. It would be nice though, I'd like to know if I'm responding to someone who's banned. A simple strike through would be enough: LoyceV (not me ).
Users with a signature ban are not banned from the forum (anymore).

While I was going through the OP, the quote on not having to merit banned users caught my eyes, it presented merit as though being given to the users account rather than the posts. Well, it wouldn’t mean anything to the users account rather haven’t been previously banned but, in the context that quality posts is what is being merited rather than the user, a post isn’t banned or removed else, it be none existent or has no value. In as much as the post isn’t deleted and it’s perceived to be of quality, meriting it isn’t exactly out of place. It’s a pointer to what a quality post does look like for someone. Then again, for the idea of banned (temporal bans, signature bans & permanent bans) there should be a means to denote these if we look to implement it. I would like to know this for sure and the suggestion from LoyceV on the cross It would be nice though, I'd like to know if I'm responding to someone who's banned. A simple strike through would be enough: LoyceV (not me ).
Users with a signature ban are not banned from the forum (anymore). However, you don’t get to know what kind of ban the user is placed on. Perhaps there could be a color pattern to this, when it’s inked in red (permanent), inked in yellow (temporal) and inked in blue (Sig ban). Or perhaps we could just center it on permanently banned users.

I fully acknowledge that this isn't my forum and I'm not owed a damn thing by Theymos, but still I'm curious as to why what you wrote above is true. Do you have any idea, or is that in itself a closely-held secret? Also, I swear I remember from my lurking days in 2014 that banned members were identified--but I could be confusing that with the old scammer tag. OP is probably surprised that there's no indication anywhere on a member's profile that they've been banned since (AFAIK) that's the way it works on a lot of other discussion boards, but this place....well, many things work differently than how you'd expect.

I support your idea from here, its more effective that one can see their ban status right form the profile, this will help us know more well about the forum member we are about to deal with, also, if possible that a banned account should be unable to receive merits, but how do we differentiate an inactive account user from a banned user, when it comes to sending merits, like Satoshi account was not banned but has been inactive for years and members are still sending merits, same applies to other accounts, it is better only a banned account should not receive merits and inactive account can receive merits as usual.

Banned accounts, inactive accounts, accounts from died people are all deserved to receive merit for all good posts they have ver made before bans, deaths or dormancy. Merit is for good posts and don't treat good posts differently. Merit is also not scarce and each month there are many sourced merits, so if you merit good posts of banned accounts, dormant accounts or dead accounts, it won't affect forum merit availability too much. Satoshi left forum years ago and his posts received thousands of merit. Same with Hal Finney account.

This annoys me time and time again. But I have a simple trick to identify banned accounts, although it is a bit annoying, but effective. To identify banned accounts, you can check the trust list, if there is a negative sign, then you can see the time of his last activeness. Then you can see the time of his last post. Although it is difficult to identify a newly banned person, but if his activity on the forum is stopped for a long time after having a negative sign on his account or his activity on the forum is stopped for a long time, then you will understand that he is banned from this forum or he is not alive. But if there is a system in the forum from which a banned person can be identified very easily, then it would be very good.
Another confusing thing for me is the correct information about the forum members. How many legends are there in the forum or how many hero members are there or a statistic and list of all rank members. I don't know if the forum already has this. If there is, please someone let me know.

That's very wrong to assume inactive negative tagged profile is get banned, I saw many users are stopping to post when they received negative feedback, it's because they no longer participate in signature campaign, hence they don't want to spend their effort without any possibility to make money. It's also wrong to assume inactive user means the person who control it has passed away. It's easy to check banned account, use https://bpip.org/How many legends are there in the forum or how many hero members are there or a statistic and list of all rank members.
Maybe this site will help https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5537114.msg65237717#msg65237717

OP, during my time here I saw multiple such requests. But it never turned into reality. Now it's not big deal when we have 3rd party tools where you can check this stuff. Like BPIP browser extension where you can check user status without even leaving Bitcointalk. I don't know. I don't think it makes much sense, as recent bans are continuously published in modlog anyway. If there wouldn't any ways to check it, maybe it would be just not our business. But now it doesn't makes sense when we see it in modlog and 3rd party websites like BPIP or your website.

Well I haven't used the chrome extension of bpip for long now rather have been manually checking profile on the site directly without using the extension on my mobile except for my personal computer, although is been while I turned it on as we are facing power failure so mostly on mobile these days and I don't see people who are banned automatically just as the extension do functions. Usually the extension do helps a lot to fetch and filter out those profiles that are banned or inactive for awhile.
I support your motion as it's actually not making any meaning without knowing ban profiles and especially sending out merits to them while the already existing users needs it more than the banned accounts, though there is nothing bad giving out merits to ban account for their quality post but to me it seems to be waste and burning down the total circulation of merits.

This idea is good and it will be nice such feature is being added to the forum. I don't know if the admin has a specific reason why he didn't add such feature to the forum but there's still advantages of it if it can be added. For example, in a thread where you see an unclear post, you could ask the person to explain further what they meant but if the person is banned, you wouldn't know and they wouldn't respond to you.
@OP, regarding sending of merit to banned accounts as it was stated by the merit source in the post you quoted, If that's the only reason to add such feature on users profile, I am not in support for the feature because it's just a criteria of the merit source and not for everyone. Sending of merit to the posts of a banned account does not defeat the purpose of merit, merit is to appreciate the quality of a comment or to appreciate the knowledge which you have gained from post. Whether the person is banned or not, you can read and learn from their post and you can give a thumbs up for the comment by dropping a merit.

Maybe, but I personally find it useless to send merit to any of those accounts as they can't send merit back to other members, meaning its wasted.

I agree with you and so far I have the same thoughts and habits. I try not to send merit to banned accounts, inactive accounts or accounts that are knownthe owner have passed away, it's just a waste of merit that will probably not be in circulation anymore after the account receives it. I try to avoid it, but people can do whatever they want for one reason or another. For example, what some user do to satoshi posts like this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2216.msg29280#msg29280It would have been nice to get this attention in any other context. WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.

And it would be easier to know if a user is banned or not simply by checking his profile summary. I believe a fix like this would help Fillipone continue his good services with a bit of ease and it would also make the forum profile summary a bit richer.
What are your thoughts on this?.
The BPIP.org extension is still working. With a recent Chrome update, some extensions got disabled by default. One of the affected extensions is bpip.org. If you are using chrome, you would have to manually re-enable it or just use Firefox The suggestion you have made has been put up so many times and I guess Theymos is not willing to add anything. My suggestion is that you use the third party extension for now.

Unless this has changed, those bans are only from "autobans" that are done to newbie (?) accounts and temp bans will not be shown in hte mod log. IIRC, the fact that someone is banned is not public because theymos doens't want people potentially trying to impersonate banned users to make it look like they are evading a ban. Also, banned users can still log in (to my knowledge), and read the forum, but they cannot post.
