Rain forests are typically govt-owned. Tough for prvt parties to buy in

Well... in countries like Brazil, large chunks of rain forest are owned by private companies or individuals.

then we can own some too Cheesy

Hi all,

I would ike to start by telling you that I am part of BitLeu development team.
We are in the process of finalizing a plan and we will come up with a company that will plant and sell rights for the mahogany trees (Swietenia Macrophylla) in the Philippines.
The company HQ will be located in UK but there will be also HQ in the Philippines.
The prices of the trees will be much smaller than the competition and for the start it will be subsidized by our company for interested investors, in order to bring awareness to this new project. We will be also reserved in giving a huge value to the harvested trees as most of other similar businesses will inflate it or they will be just very optimistic about the value of the harvest.

My username has some connection to this type of business as it is one of my old ideas. User Crocko (also part of development team) that was posting here, made me aware of this thread and also brought back to me the idea of building such a business, but this time there is something new involved: cryptocurrencies.

I would like to thank him for his bright mind and also for the very useful, continuous help he is bringing in sustaining our ethnic cryptocurrency.
Who wants more information about our plans, numbers and anything else about this new venture, you are free to PM me.

Until then you can follow @BitLeu or www.facebook.com/bitleu, there will be updates posted there.

Thank you.

Hi guys!
Does anyone know how to buy rainforest in borneo, amazonas or something?
Would be kinda cool to create a bitcoin funded natural reserve.

A privately funded natural reserve is a fantastic idea.
Using the free market for things generally associated with the Gov is a huge step in the right direction.

A privately funded natural reserve is a fantastic idea.

The most important problem is the annual expenses (in the form of hired security, accounts, bureaucracy). We are planning to take care of that, by promoting tourism. The revenues from tourism can be diverted for the expenses.

There are still about 15,000 Comanche living in the US, mostly in the Comanche Reservation (OK) and Texas. The tradition is still very strong, with Comanche language being used in (some of) the schools and a large part of the population believing in the traditional religion.

Actually out of the 3,000 or more tribes which inhabited the US at the time of first contact, more than 1,000 have survived to this day. Compare this with the ~500 surviving tribes out of the 15,000 which inhabited the Brazil prior to the arrival of the Europeans.

I've lived in Borneo
very sad to see the forest cut down everyday there
many private company do that, especially coal company for mining coal

I think it's hard to buy a tropical rain forest, especially when it became part of the national park.
it was protected by government and not for sold
did you mean buy some of land and planting seeds in there?

I've also heard a lot about Palm Oil companies cutting down forest for their plantations.
I cannot speak for OP, but I got the impression the idea was to buy some rainforest to preserve it.

Deforestation is a big problem in Indonesia / Malaysia, as the corrupt government officials are allowing logging after taking in bribes. The only way to stop this is to threaten international sanctions if they don't prevent deforestation.

Secondary forest can never become as ecologically diverse as the primary forest. But something is better than nothing.  Grin

Actually the problem was started when the Indonesian government gave permission to destroy 1,000,000 hectares of peat forest for the Mega Rice Project.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Rice_Project_(Kalimantan)

The project was a gigantic failure. But it opened the flood gates for loggers. Right now more than 2/3rds of the forests in Borneo have been destroyed.

Buying the already deforested land might be easy. A few years ago, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) bought 2,000 ha. of such land and planted trees there. But protecting this land can be tricky. Even if you hire private security, they don't have any authority to detain the loggers or to use any sort of force.
