Besides it adds native Trezor support, plus Solana NFT handling got better too, and Monero sync now shows progress smoothly instead of looking frozen while the wallet starts up. Just highlighting, I just saw the announcement of native support for Trezor transaction signatures in their post on X. I'm liking to see that they are integrating hardware wallets with native support in Cake software, most of the workflow used to be all through Trezor Suite mobile. 🔐 Native Trezor Support for Bitcoin: Cold storage made easy. You can now pair your Trezor device and sign Bitcoin transactions natively right inside Cake Wallet, keeping your private keys offline and secure. Has Cake supported Trezor since the Trezor Model T (my model), as I tested it a few months ago? Does Trezor One have support?

Fresh Cake release, namely 6.4.5. It’s mostly the polish release that makes the Trezor connection faster which was definately needed. Cake UI got a few small layout tweaks and handful of bug fixes , so app should run smoother and the difference should be noticable hope I'm not wrong with this.

I'm still using version 6.4.4 I haven't gotten a notification for an updated version. The app runs smoothly enough right now, so anything that would be better than this would be nice. Comparing how the app is now to how it was when I started using it, I can see that it has come a long way. Everything synchronises much faster now.

It's the shame they "paused" updating the wallet for desktop users ever since version 6.0.0. It's been more than 10 months since they said they were going to "overhaul and redesign" the desktop builds and nothing has been out yet. For reference version 5.6.1 was the last one and it's already on page 3 of their release page: https://github.com/cake-tech/cake_wallet/releases?page=3#release-v5.6.1

I'm still using version 6.4.4 I haven't gotten a notification for an updated version.
As far as i know or observed since i installed cakewallet, there is no notification or pop up notif when there's a new update of the app. Aside from playstore notif of pending updates, the moment you open PS (if android user). Or is this simply because update notifications are not prioritized in my notification settings? Well, it's enabled btw. I am still on version 6.4.3 for now. Not really in a hurry to update yet. lol

Yeah, they don't send notifications for updates. They don't even send a notification when you receive or make a transaction (I think that's a little something that needs to change). It's the Play Store notification I was talking about. After I saw the post about the new version, I even checked but didn't see any updated version.

Sometimes there is a delay between the time the developers release a new version and it is included on PlayStore and sends the update required notification. But regarding the in-app update notification, some developers consider it a weakness and an attack vector that may be exploited. Implementing such a feature needs to be done with extra care. If they are too "flexible" with the message we could end up with a mess similar to this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5090097.0

Especially in-app notifications can be bypassed and exploited if used like with api. I remember a local exchange in my country was exploited with the same method, the third party account for the in-app notification was compromised. Just like that the effect was like on electrum, the difference, nothing was downloaded, but victims connect their web3 wallet that cause losses. https://x.com/bitpinas/status/2030301343123226693

They didn't actually stopped updating for dekstop, but they slowed it down only for wind0ws OS, and they have mobile version priority. You can clearly see that latest version exist for Linux computers, as flatpak or source code, so you need to stop using windows OS. https://github.com/cake-tech/cake_wallet/releases

I do use Linux for cold storage but to abandon Windows entirely is easier said than done. I use a bunch of software that simply don't run on Linux so I'll have to bend over backwards to run them which won't work for me. Some examples are: - A bunch of engineering software that the companies refuse to make multi-platform! - Visual Studio (I hate VS Code, it also doesn't have some of the utilities VS has) - Adobe Premiere Pro (I need to look into and learn the alternatives and I'm too lazy to do so) - Over a dozen useful "desktop" tools I've coded for myself in the pat 10-15 years that only work in Windows since the UI is pure WPF and changing the UI layer and replacing Windows-specific code to make it work on Linux takes a lot of time that I don't have.

The latest Cake Wallet release, namely 6.5.0. Most noticeable for me is the change to the Bitcoin wallet, which can be split into a few separate accounts, and it seems they open much faster because the old transactions load in the background. Those who use Robinhood Chain I am not one of them can send, receive, and swap coins using Cake.

Is it referring to the BIP44 accounts feature, meaning at the native BIP protocol level? I hadn't accessed my Cake in a long time, I had only tested it with a hardware wallet. I accessed it again using my Trezor model T and it showed up for me to choose accounts numerically followed by addresses. I choose account 0 (usually the account everyone uses initially). Is that it? I don't remember if the balance appeared in the listed accounts, but I think it's interesting to show the balance, since I chose account 0 because I already knew it had a balance.

I think this feature could be convenient for people who split their funds between a few accounts designated, for example, for husband, wife, children, and so on, and who want to move coins between them in a straightforward way or for sellers who want to separate payments from their customers while also having the simple way to manage incoming payments. In fact, you can imagine plenty of similar cases.

Yeah, that's true, this feature was designed precisely for that. The thing is, I wasn't aware that Cake wallet still hadn't made this Bitcoin functionality available in their app (since I consider it such a basic function, given that it is at the Bitcoin protocol level). I rarely ever use any account other than index 0.

I know this is off-topic, but I’d like to help you reduce your reasons for feeling dependent on Windows. - Visual Studio (I hate VS Code, it also doesn't have some of the utilities VS has) - Adobe Premiere Pro (I need to look into and learn the alternatives and I'm too lazy to do so)
https://vscode.dev (web version): I haven’t personally tested how closely its capabilities compare to the desktop version. https://getartcraft.com/apps/filmcraft (sandboxed): There’s been a lot of buzz lately around a brand called Artcraft; they’ve cloned several flagship apps from Adobe and Windows, and users claim they are, on average, 90% similar to the original.

VS Code is pretty much a code editor (good for writing code and testing) not a full development environment. For example its debugger and diagnostics are weaker, it has no performance profilers (you have to install extensions and they don't do the job), the UI designers didn't exist either (a pain to write XAML), testing is very limited (no Test Explorer, no test debugging, ...). Thanks for introducing FilmCraft, installed it just now and it is surprisingly slower compared to Adobe Premiere, but it solved one of the main issues I had with Premiere which was editing videos with x265 encoding.

There is a critical vulnerability in Cake Wallet which allows a malicious Electrum server to change the receiving address in an RBF transaction, thereby diverting funds. There is currently no fix for this yet besides running your own Electrum server, or setting it to a trusted server like LoyceV's server or electrum.bitmixlist.org, or nodes ran by Electrum maintainers. https://x.com/exitnode_/status/2113973284656033932https://x.com/1440000bytes/status/2113930464344129724

Is this really a vulnerability in Cake Wallet? As far as I understand, the issue affects any wallet that connects to public Electrum servers. All you need to do to avoid falling for it is double-check the recipient addresses if you want to bump the transaction fee. That said, it's crucial to verify the full address, not just the last few characters.

It is the weakness of SPV aka light clients and the way Electrum protocol works. Light clients don't perform transaction verification because they don't have a UTXO set (although there are ways to do it for your own transactions). After all S.P.V. stands for "Simplified Payment Verification", so they rely on a full node aka a server to tell them which transactions exit and which don't. They also rely on PoW being secure meaning they know if a transaction is confirmed (included in a block) and is deep (has more confirmation than one) then the likelihood of it being invalid is zero. A confidence they don't have for unconfirmed transactions and they fully rely on the server for it. In this case the malicious server exploits that trust.
