The government's trying to lock him up for helping people keep their coins private with Tornado Cash.

It has just been removed from the SDN. We cannot allow them to get away with this!

This is Ross Ulbricht all over again. Personally, I'm going to donate some coins to him, and if you're reading this, you should consider doing so too.
It is just disheartening to see how government fight against privacy. Trying to Lock him up for doing completely nothing wrong other than to keep peoples coin safe with Tornado Cash is something I don't get. Anyway I will try as much as possible to help in donating some coin as little as I can. Our goal is to support privacy.

Just after we celebrated Ross Ulbricht freedom from the prison another ugly incidence about to happen. Why is the government enemy to privacy? Do they want everything to be under their watch and custody? then what is the freedom we have as our fundamental human right?. Is it that the government is trying to practice giving us something with the right hand and taking it back through the left hand?

Okay this comes as a shocker to me. I thought we have gone passed the case of tornado cash so stopped following up.
After the DOJ statement
Quote
“The Department will pursue the illicit financing of these enterprises by the individuals and enterprises themselves, including when it involves digital assets, but will not pursue actions against the platforms that these enterprises utilize to conduct their illegal activities.”
I was of the notion that this would stand for the creators, I guess I forgot that a business entity is separate from its owners.

It seems once it involves cryptocurrency sentences are being placed in huge numbers.
Ironically one of his charges is not registering the business as a money service
While being aware that doing so would kill the core service of the firm.

This importance of this case is not even emphasised enough.
How it plays out would determine this administration true stance towards privacy.

The people who often ask why Satoshi decided to stay anonymous and never reveal his real identity need to study this case, and they will get their answer. This is the very reason why he decided to stay anonymous, because he knew he was creating something that was going to clash with the traditional financial systems. Governments and authorities around the world aren't going to like it. He will surely become a target for what he did, even though his intentions were only to do something good for the human race, or those who are being misused by the traditional systems.

The CEO of Telegram was also arrested earlier for the same reason: providing privacy to its users, and now this. We need to get one thing straight: no matter how good they try to be, how they show us they care about us, and are supporting cryptocurrencies, it's all drama and lies, and there are always ulterior motives behind their plans and whatever they say or do. It's all politics, and nothing else.

I hope the guy survives and gets free. After all, his only crime is to try to provide a way for people to have more privacy. Smiley

I was thinking that this second term of Donald Trump....

You are, in a way, saying funny things about Trump, about someone who sticks his nose where his interests should not be. Privacy is the exact opposite of Trump's interests, and it is not surprising that a country like America, which spies everywhere, will persecute people who do not want to open the windows of their private lives and help others to do the same.

But it's logical for them to do so - they want as much control as there is available, and everybody who stands in between - it's the ones that are opposing this concept.

This is so fucking stupid. It basically means that you can make an open source software, the software will operate freely, but you the developer will be prosecuted for the actions done with said software to the maximum extent permitted by the law.

One can argue that smart contracts are separate entities from the person who created them, but they are not business entities. This is like arresting somebody for running an unregistered MSB but then giving the business the OK to keep running.

Unfortunate, yet true - they grab what they can, and here, they decided that would be the best they could do to discourage and "fix" what was done by not by Roman, but by other people, like you outlined.

I don't for once trust the rule of government because of this centralization palava they have been used to, as their judgement is always in the wrong way to oppose privacy and encourage centralization, all in the name of being in charge, while at our individual cost, maybe it's now high time for them to realize on what is being at stake, if they can't allow it, then we deserve it, this is all about freedom for privacy and nothing more

I also employ the community members to join in support for our privacy, because once affected will get to us all, let's show all we've got as a community for the unity and progress of us all, this guy must not go to jail.

This is same reason Ross was persecuted. The government are against anything that doesn't show control.
So open sourced and decentralized is a no go. This case would show the government stance towards such projects.

Now the hypocrisy is Government Fiat are used anonymously way better than mixers but nobody brings the government to court

Because they are at the helm of the system that - may - be opposed by decentralization, - unfortunately, that's the case, and there is little we can do about it.

What a huge blow on privacy yet again. Even though Tornado Cash was built on the Ethereum network, but its founder Roman Storm doesn't deserve a jail term. Decentralization is the future, let's help protect it. We are tired of government's interference in our own privacy, we can't continue being subjected to their custody all the time like their slaves.

It's already within us, exchanges enforcing KYC or don't use them. While the casinos aren't wholly regulated yet but we get the picture of it. I guess that Ross and Roman's cases will open the eyes of the public on how the privacy of an individual was already invaded by the government. Everyone is watching this case, and I hope that fate will be in favor of Roman. I thought that they'd lie low on privacy-related services, or this was just before that announcement was said.

With the way the government wants to associate with crypto, especially Bitcoin, I fear that in the coming future, the government will try as much as possible to ensure the identity of all who use Bitcoin is known. The only problem the government has with crypto is privacy; if not, they would have embraced it a long time ago. We should not get too relaxed. We can already see how those pushing this privacy agenda are being treated like criminals. It is indeed pitiable.

I think it's worth noting here that anyone who wishes to contribute to this cause should carefully consider where they send their money to avoid being scammed, as the networks will surely be filled with impostors asking to send money to fake accounts to defraud and take advantage of the situation.

Its a crazy overreach of power and proof that centralized and decentralized money systems will always be somewhat at odds with each other (if not completely at odds). All the Tornado Cash developers did was create some brilliant code & deploy it. It cannot be stopped; its use only discouraged. It is now on whatever blockchain forensics services are hired by the NSA, CIA, etc. to monitor the incoming & outgoing ETH transactions. The developers can't help the state & punishing them changes nothing.

On the upside, 45 years is the max if Storm is convicted on all 3 charges against him, and there's a strong possibility that the first two won't stick (the ones related to money laundering, while the 3rd has to do with operating as a money transmitter without a license). So he potentially serves a 3-5 year service max, which is still too much, but a more realistic outcome than the entire 45, in my non-lawyer opinion.

I am so glad that Bitcoin isn't a privacy coin, OP do you think this is the perfect section for this post because it's not Bitcoin related at all, I hope this man will get his freedom somehow.

I believe that somehow Trump can get him out of there easily, I hope he get the justice he deserved, although I am against privacy ways of moving money because it's only a side of this that's good.

The other part is not, I can see many people saying privacy is life, it's so true but privacy in cash and movement of funds is not always clean, if you think I am wrong, then you are been partial, simply because you are a citizen of a country, not a leader.

War on crime won't allow privacy funding to breath and I don't blame anyone, people are selling children overseas, human trafficking and using privacy funding is one of the ways they hide their tracks.

He might get a favourable judgement if he gets the right legal team and enough financial backing. The government would have to prove that he is aware that some of the funds transmitted through Tornado Cash are derived from criminal activities. There might also be some political undertone related to this selective trial. The government assumes that Tornado Cash was used by North Korean-backed hackers, the Lazarus group. Since the US government is not friendly with North Korea,  Roman Storm is now the available target.
