University degrees are still worth it but it depends on the course of study. I used to advise my people that this era is not when someone will go and study courses like Political science; Sociology; Fishery; Library and information studies; BAM etc. Go to school and study professional courses like Medicine, Architecture etc and you will be relevant. This advice could only be for my country people, I don't know for other countries.

It depends on your own stance with education and hitting a university degree. While others don’t see it as a compulsory factor, but maybe the rest of here still want to give value to it due to their personal reasons.
As per my own stance, I would still want to see my kids acquire a university degree in the future. Life isn’t certain, and the more it will be uncertain if you don’t have any bachelor’s degree that will back up you in the near future. This isn’t just about job hunting, but it’s something one of the wealth of every individual that anyone can take pride of.

You have a point though. It would be best to get a course that will give you huge relevance in the future, something that will make all your hard work and sacrifices paid off. However, still the decision lies on the person itself on what course he’s more convenient and suitable to. Where he feels more comfortable, rest assured he will do his best on his future career. Bottomline is, university degree still is of high importance for majority.

Is university still worth it today? Are “extra skills” and certificates just another money-making trick? Has anyone here found success without a degree, or by learning something new outside of school? Is this the start of a new way of working, or just a big mess?
University this days are not really worth it! AIs do the work for students, just a lot going on in the universities of today. but however the decrease are not a total waste of time but it could also serve for diffect purposes. In recent times, people have discovered that the reason those certificates where required are merely to justify workers on levels of followership but now anyone can succeed without the decrease schools offer all you need is to be smart, know how to read and write that all and you can be your own teacher from home.

Depends. Healthcare is always high in demand. Dentists, nurses, medical doctors will have no problems with getting a job no matter what happens. Even AI cannot take their jobs away.
The others? They seem dead unless you highly specialize in a field but then you need to be able to sustain yourself till you reach that stage and that’s why it seems it is not worth the wait.
If you ever want to get a job just because you finished college, go get a license that’s related to healthcare. Otherwise get ready to work way way harder just to land on a job.
I tagree with you, because even with the advancement of technology used in medical & health care industry using robots in carrying out surgery, there are people that can't afford to pay for such bill or people who are scared of carrying out surgical operations in their body and wouldn't allow a robot to carry out surgery on their body. Obviously, there are limits to what AI robots can do here, like taking care of patients the way nurses usually do. Some University degree masters degree masters, especially those that involve some Engineering skills.

Degrees are still essential in professions like doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. Universities are a platform for learning soft skills, communication skills, analytical skills, where universities play an important role. On the other hand, there are many companies that still want people who know how to do things with their hands instead of degrees on paper. The demand for work skills, experience and taking things seriously is increasing. Nowadays, not only careers, but many people have built small business ventures together and become entrepreneurs or small freelancing projects based on human skills and flexibility. Since the cost of universities is very high, graduates are burdened with debt. Now the job market is not only limited to the country's internal limitations, but also the competition for work is going on around the world. Some companies are able to get work done cheaply from other countries. I think if a person has self-reliance, personal skills, quick learning skills, and knows the techniques, he can get into a good position.

Has anyone else noticed that these days, having a university degree does not seem to guarantee a good job anymore? In the US, more than 40% of new graduates are working in jobs that don’t even need a degree! In the UK and Canada, youth unemployment is even higher, and entry-level jobs are much harder to get. Now, for each job, there are more than 100 people applying
Yeah, it's so stupid. I didn't even bother getting a degree for this reason. A lot of people blame technology (especially AI, robots and automation) for stealing jobs. But the truth is more complicated. Companies are using AI to get rid of simple tasks, yes, but they’re also sending jobs to cheaper countries. And when there are jobs, many companies do not care about your university name anymore. They want to see if you really have the skills or special training for that job. That means people have to pay even more to get extra “certificates” after graduating
So how hiring departments of companies were supposed to recruit people all along. I will never understand why people care so much about your alumni. This is not like law firms that only hire from Harvard Law School. Meanwhile, graduates are stuck with debt and stress. Many young people feel lost, frustrated, and even angry, like society promised them something it can’t deliver. In the past, too many frustrated young people has led to big changes. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Do you think the old way of working (one job, one company, climbing step by step) is over? Now, I see many young people having several jobs, working on short projects, or even starting small businesses on the side. In a recent report, more than half of workers noticed more people working two or more jobs
That is the future that people will face if they just go study for a degree. Is university still worth it today? Are “extra skills” and certificates just another money-making trick? Has anyone here found success without a degree, or by learning something new outside of school? Is this the start of a new way of working, or just a big mess?
No. Proof of skill platforms will be more valuable in the future, that take away your certification if you fail to maintain competency.

A piece of paper is worthless if you lack skills, abilities, and creativity. However, your skills, abilities, and creativity will go unappreciated if you don't have that piece of paper. That's the reality today. However, if you believe you can achieve success without higher education, then take the steps to achieve that success immediately, and skip school.
Furthermore, whether that piece of paper is important or not depends on your goals. If you want to be an officer, a politician, a teacher, or a director, then that piece of paper is crucial because without it, you will never reach your desired position. However, if you want to be an entrepreneur, then school and that piece of diploma are both important and unimportant.

A university degree will definitely be valuable when you have a high skill along with that degree. When you work in a company, you definitely have to perform duties according to your position, they will not keep you there and pay you because of your degree. You have to do that work according to the company category and do it very strictly. So if you only have a degree, it will never be enough for a good job. For a good job, you must have work experience and have a lot of good skills that will help you achieve a better position. A degree is just a formality, if you want to earn money, you will need to work hard and that meticulously.

A degree is just a formality, if you want to earn money, you will need to work hard and that meticulously. I agree with you, nothing good can ever be achieved with just a paper and pen degree, real experience and skills are always needed, a degree is certainly an important foundation, but it is only the key to opening the door, and then everything depends on your skills and abilities. You can get a job with the help of a degree, but after getting that job, if you cannot complete the tasks given to them with your skills, in that case they will very simply fire you from the job, and your degree will become completely worthless there. So a degree is necessary, but just having a degree is not enough, rather you must increase your skills and real experience, otherwise your degree is completely worthless.

Recently I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw a video of a Nigerian content creator who is known to be an illiterate interviewing people with masters degree to come and work for him as his cameraman...he specifically requested for master degree holders and he can't even speak English fluently.. Going to school and bagging a degree is good but this tells you how times are changing... Honestly university degrees are not worth getting anymore

A degree without skills is like a car without an engine, shiny on the outside, but empty on the inside. Of course a university degree holds value, no questions on that. But sometimes, where you get that degree from makes it a little different. Where I come from, from nursery to university, the education curriculum revolves around memorizing books. There are very little scope for real push to explore, question, or apply what we have studiedd so far. What I mean is that, their in no real growth here. Our education system lacks the teaching of real world skills, which will enable me to get hired, skills that will get me a job. These are the things that we acquire using our own hardship, not from the universities. And tbh, they don't teach us about it.

Glad I at least read one post here, and it happened to be yours, else I would have repeated the same sentiment. I've got mixed feelings on this one, because part of me thinks just having a high school diploma (or its equivalent in other countries) is still an impediment to getting a decent job even if it's not in whatever field you studied in college had you gone to college. The other part sympathizes with people wrestling with this very question because of sheer economics, i.e., it's too damn expensive these days to take out loans for a higher education--especially if you don't know what it is you want to do for a career. And the thing is that there are so many subjects one can major in--really interesting, fascinating ones, too--but they're never going to do anything for anyone aside from proving they attended university. In particular, I'm talking about liberal arts majors. That includes everything from psychology to physics. Unless you go on to graduate school (which is more money and more time out of your life), forget about actually doing something in your major that's anything more than being a technician bringing home a lousy paycheck. As mindrust pointed out, there are majors that pay off right after graduation. Nursing, engineering, physical therapy, pharmacy, and a bunch of others that are worth taking out loans for. Everything else? Well, if you can afford it I'd say go for it. If not, I'd say not everyone needs to go to college.

I'm not saying that it isn't worth it, but it isn't a necessity for us to be successful in the future. Some might look at a university as "something important", but not for me anymore despite the fact that I graduated from college as well. I've seen graduates that are now having a hard time finding a job for various reasons. There are jobs that can't be taken by AI, and most of them are those that isn't require technology like nurses like what the above post said and something about healthcare. What I would say though is that, things aren't the same back then anymore. Right now, you can still be successful despite not having a degree and vice-versa. What I believe is that, as long as you have a skill, and you can make money by using that "skill", you can be successful in life even though you don't have a degree. We've seen people becoming successful even though they don't have a degree so it's still worth anything at least for me, but not that important anymore.

One thing is that many individuals initially don't have access to exposure of ideas and clue on career impact and before pursing any career field, one requires deep insights and universal comparison and clarity. But still,University degree still remains valuable but it's not the only pathway to success.

Then why not study for profession that wont be replaced by AI? Why not choose university that will make you a demanded specialist when you graduate instead of selecting university or job that everyone choose now or parents insist to choose. I have noticed two profession trends in my country in past. First people wanted to work with finances, to be white collars, then people wish to be designers. No matter who you ask the answer was: I will be a banker, work in bank, manage finances. Or I will be a clothes, accessories designer. Now those two generations have difficulties finding work, because their designed clothes and etc cost a lot, and people prefer something cheaper and mass brand. And banks dont need 100000 operators, bookkeepers, managers, analytics.

I thought this was typical of my country and developing countries, where degrees have become useless. However, I'm surprised to find this is the casein most countries around the world.
As for me, I earned a secondary school certificate, but it didn't benefit me at all in my professional life. I was hired in a government job with a meager salary and worked there for years without achieving any financial advancement.
Fortunately, I learned about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies a long time ago and gained skills and experience through my work, without any real role for my degree. I left my job and began earning an income through cryptocurrency trading that was several times my salary. In practice, I didn't benefit at all from my degree.

Depends. Healthcare is always high in demand. Dentists, nurses, medical doctors will have no problems with getting a job no matter what happens. Even AI cannot take their jobs away.
Don’t feel so bad about repeating the earlier sentiments mang. I lost count on how many times I made posts in a similar topic before. Do you think people who still make posts in this 7 pages long thread read every other post before they make theirs? No mang. It doesn’t woork that wai. AI killed college degrees. Let’s hope AI will achieve immortality for us otherwise we will die poor. The government has to something about it mang. I want my universal base income. $10k worth of btc every month in my btc address would work. Nurse girls are hot btw

Just think, what would have happened to you if you didn't have a secondary school certificate during the years you didn't know about bitcoin? Do you think you could get a government job without a degree, and what would your life be like? It is clear that your degree has helped you a lot, but sadly you deny its role and look down on it. Moreover, whether we have a high income or not, whether we are rich or not, largely depends on our efforts, diligence or trade-offs...We cannot blame degrees for not getting high paying jobs and becoming rich. Education and degrees are just foundations, baggage or weapons, and whether we know how to use and leverage them to help us win depends on ourselves.

The world has gotten to a time where you don't need a degree from the university to succeed because the world has gone beyond that stage of going to school so that you can get a good job to survive instead of going to a conventional university people should prioritize vocational education which will empower them with a skill that they can in getting a living, school is not a guarantee for success these days it's skilled workers that are living a good life
