There will be more news like this in the media soon as this is a familiar move by the US whenever they target someone. But unfortunately, this move will not work because there is no trade deficit between the US and Brazil, nor are they Brazil's largest trading partner.

Increasing tariffs or escalating tensions will only hurt both countries, and the people of both countries will bear the full consequences.
Brazil certainly will not give in because they are a country with a trade deficit with the US, not the other way around, so they have no reason to give in to unreasonable US pressure.
Considering Brazil is part of BRICS pact as well, I am sure that whatever they were selling to USA, they could just keep on selling to Russia and China and they would still be fine ,there won't be any issues for them at all. I get that USA may want to (or more like trump) make a show out of this, like keep on doing tariffs to show the voters he is doing something, but there is absolutely nothing that could make this viable at all.

He is looking for that third term, yes it should be "not allowed" but I guarantee you, with congress, senate, supreme court and everywhere else in his pocket so that means if he tries to run for a third term, who could really stop him? Like who has the power to actually stop him? All the people that have the power, are already his republican friends, so I bet you that if he can, he will try.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent market to US. It is just too big and uses up resources like no other system. So I would not count on an easy change for many of the products. It may be the case that China and India profit for a termporary overproduction, but most likely production in Brasil may experience a downturn.

Unless BRICS can actually put their act together, but it does not seem so. Too many different interests.

I don’t know if Donald Trump’s talk about tariffs on August 1st is just a bluff, but from what’s being reported here, President Lula is even enjoying a slight increase in popularity. But in the end, it’s all about narratives, right? The left loves narratives. It’s incredible how they have such a strong power of manipulation. Trump is outraged because Brazil is part of BRICS. Then they throw Jair Bolsonaro, ankle monitors, and Alexandre de Moraes into the mix, when in reality, the bigger issue is BRICS challenging the dollar. That’s the conclusion I’m drawing from this whole tariff situation here in Brazil

At this moment, it seems that everything is mixed up, with many people involved and much more at stake than reciprocal tariffs
In addition to the economic aspect, politics is now at stake and even involves the Brazilian judiciary

Honestly, we Brazilians know that we are the weakest part and that we will suffer the most from any political and economic dispute that is taking place

I believe that at first it could be a bluff and a negotiation strategy, but at this point I already have my doubts

I don't think Trump will keep the tariffs. He just wants to bully countries to negotiate and say later that he is a strong leader. I think he is sweating now because Lula doesn't want to negotiate and tariffs will make inflation rise on the USA. And if he chickens out other countries will see he is all bluff and no action.

It actually benefits nobody to maintain such a bar on trade, obviously the idea is the bigger and richer country can afford to make such a mistake but it does not actually really help them either this is the fallacy of such measures.
Wider view or longer term the balance of whether Trump means to do such things forever doesnt matter, I agree its not a long term strategy its bully tactics.  Regardless of present politics, Trump is only there by democratic term for a few years which for macro economic trade globally is merely seconds comparatively.
It really does not matter one persons view, its not beneficial to act this way and any more then a sand castle vs the waves its a measure that will not last the next tide change.

He sometimes does it like this because he is a person who thinks something, does something and sees something. Because of which he does such things and sometimes he also acts according to your opinion and I think he really does half of the work to instill fear and half of the work to create peace in his country, which is why he is still at the forefront of strong countries. Obviously, when he does such a thing, other countries will also do the same, just like China and America imposed very high tariffs on each other and finally talked about war but it did not happen.

I'm not sure if you’ve been following the news, but President Donald Trump has just announced 50% tariffs on Brazil. Some say it's politically motivated retaliation, while others believe it's a way to economically target a country that, under its current government, has been favoring dictatorships and communists, attacking freedom of expression, and going after American companies, especially those in the tech sector. So, what do you think about this?

(Click on the image to view full size)

I don't really know why this is happening but I think Donald Trump has been misusing the power the United States has to inflict other nations that don't support his political movement. This absolutely absurd and unethical for him to place high tariffs on Brazil because its one of the members of BRICS countries. Maybe he should have done the same to Russia and China so make this more ideally logical. He keeps sanctioning countries with the use of tariffs and other means possible to draw a close to deal with them. Is Brazil actually having a great business rapport with the United States? I don't really know but I think the move against this country should not be acceptable.

Trump's tariffs on Brazil are not just because they are a member of BRICS, that may be one reason but not the main reason, because he did not impose similar tariffs on the other BRICS countries.

Trump's tariffs have more to do with Jair Bolsonaro, the former Brazilian president and close Trump administration ally who is facing legal charges in Brazil.

It can be said that Trump is using taxes as a political tool to interfere in Brazil's internal politics to protect and retaliate for his close ally, nothing more. This is an unacceptable abuse of power.

We have brains, not just any brains but functional brains that we can tell for ourselves when a decision is politically or economically motivated. Following the international trends on global economies we all have a clear cut of an understanding to why Trump's decision of a 50% tariff on Brazil is declared. It is not for economical purposes of any order but purely political which is drawn from the role Brazil plays as a BRICS member.

Trump taking up all of these actions on several nations expresses what a dictator he is in disguise, and all of these actions may drag the US to the mud because honestly, the US isn't self sufficient as they might think to be

This tariff dispute is a little different from others with other countries because it involves more than just tariffs themselves

This dispute takes us back to the past when there were controversies between Alexandre de Moraes, Elon Musk, Rumble, and requests to ban some users on platform X
There are many elements that have come together, and it is impossible to know exactly how far this will go

Large sectors of the Brazilian economy are extremely angry and concerned with the government because it is not negotiating quickly to resolve the problem
The impression we have is that it is turning into a personal and partisan dispute

We have practically one week until the tariffs take effect

Just yesterday, a senator (Marcos do Val) who had his passport confiscated by the Supreme Court managed to travel to Miami using his diplomatic passport
This will likely add further fuel to the fire

Seems really high but no doubt just a negotiation tactic on Trump’s part. I don’t think many of these current tariff rates with major trading partners will be what is finalised. It’s just a way of getting other countries to the table to negotiate better rates. I have absolutely no doubt that the proposed tariff deadline date will be extended. We will just have to watch this space.

Some news today, one day before the tariffs:

The Treasury Department announced Wednesday that it would be officially imposing sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the jurist leading a criminal investigation against former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro.

Trump puts 50% tariffs on Brazil and copper, eliminates a tax loophole and hints at new deals

A lot going on  Shocked
But in short, the US imposed sanctions on Minister Alexandre de Moraes, which will likely heat things up even more
However, tariffs were eased in several sectors, such as aviation, oranges, copper, etc
I believe that several American companies pressured the US government to reduce these tariffs, otherwise they would lose a lot of money

Yes, many products have been exempt so the tariffs have been weakened.

Orange juice, airplanes which are a big product from Embraer, electric motors and more than 690 items.

But what can the sanctions against Alexandre really do? I'm interested about the banks here banning him because they operate in the USA and can't have an account opened for him in theory.

And no one is going to back down I think. Lula said he's not selling brazil's sovereign and the other STF ministers are backing Alexandre. Do you think Trump is going harder in this case?

Isn't this part of the dedollarization agenda of Russia and China in the BRICS?

Russia and China indeed want to show many other countries that cooperation with the United States is not based on equality but on hierarchy. The United States can do whatever it wants: tariff wars, sanctions, embargoes. Therefore, slowly but surely, all countries must begin to reduce their dependence on the dollar. This means reducing the potential for the United States to further undermine a country's sovereignty.

Russia and China want many countries to learn from Iran, which, despite sanctions and embargoes from the United States, has courageously challenged US dominance. The country has proven itself, its trade continues despite not using dollars, its military is strong, and its people remain prosperous.

Despite all the controversy and sweet talk, China has opened its arms wide to help Brazil. Political reasons underlie its imposition of high tariffs on Brazil more than trade concerns.
