Think about it, they caught the wrong person, and instead of admitting their mistake and minimizing their crime, they forced the victim to give them $2,700. And for this they get a long prison sentence.

The latter part is what makes me laugh the most... These four kidnappers might spend up to 14 years in prison for stealing an amount that equates to only £500 for each one of them

They acted as a group, they had weapons, they planned the crime. If they hadn't taken the money, they would have gotten a much lighter sentence with a good lawyer.
They rented an apartment on Airbnb, they took the victim's personal belongings.
