What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?

It will even be better because Bitcoin was created to be a peer to peer form of transaction, using CEX is USING Bitcoin the wrong way, maybe finally people will learn to use Bitcoin the way it's supposed to be used, I will be happy if it happens, though now it's too late because institutions are here and even ETF too, people don't know what just happened, or do they? Now that ETF is now stamped on Bitcoin the old feeling tide to it has faded.

Many years ago I started using Bitcoin through P2P and I believed that's how it should be until some exchanges start seeing the advantage of money making available, kraken and many others were born, it's all in the past now we have to move forward and never look back.

I bet if that scenario where exchanges are banned there will be surge of P2P platform appear and people gonna just do what they're doing back then when we're still on the early bitcoin days.

Just do transaction with other peer and build reputation system.

These exchanges are 100% replaceable in that scenario where they are suddenly dysfunctional.

These centralised exchanges are just killing the original concept of Bitcoin i.e. p2p electronic cash system. Though the entry of big institutes into Bitcoin has a positive impact on it's price they have altogether eliminated the user privacy. If you are going to centralised exchange then you are doing compromise on your privacy.

These centralised exchanges came into existence way after Bitcoin creation. In fact they are created to gain profit from popularity of growing Bitcoin business. If they cease to exist today, Bitcoin will continue it's normal operation as it was prior to creation of centralised exchnages.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?
Yes, in my opinion, Bitcoin will survive the action, but it will not be as easy as many would think. But in the end, people will adjust, though the price will fall.

Many are dealing with Bitcoin because the internal transaction fees are low on CEX, they can build easy businesses around it, and there is easy access to their money via various means. If crypto exchanges are now left out of the equation, it will not be business as usual, and the ease will surely be taken away. Individuals will scramble for P2P platforms, and of course, a decentralised one, since the government that banned exchanges will surely be after any centralised P2P.

As for businesses, the big ones will spend more to integrate Bitcoin with their platforms, unlike the easy API that exchanges and other parties made easily available.

Bitcoin gained it's value when people started trading it and even when we didn't had any actual trading platform people were doing it and then the exchange came and the growth went to next level

And it's not the exchanges that created the mandatory KYC requirements but the government when they realized that it's not a bubble and it's not going to pop as we expected so we need to find a way to control and censor it so they went after every centralized platforms. If we have no exchange the operation of bitcoin in terms of utility will almost stall because most people use bitcoin as investment not really as payment method but it will survive and will find the way.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?
bitcoin Will Survive if all the countries bam bank not to accept or not to trade with Bitcoin, the reason being that bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and it has to do with a decentralized currency why bank is a operating with a centralized currency so that is why if bank ban bitcoin today bitcoin will continue to operate and it will succeed, secondly before introduction of banking exchange of Bitcoin people we are selling bitcoin through p2p, which I have sold my Bitcoin in 2013 without bank transaction, I received my first bitcoin selling in physical cash without transfer from Bank so if bank reject this ancient method of selling Bitcoin will come back to life

Owning an exchange isn't anything like a brink and mortar entity.

We have outlandish options globally, we can move very fast, no one country produces the majority of our users, and no one country holds the key of being a functional business.

If one area becomes hostile, another one becomes friendly, and opperations naturally lean towards the most secure and personally safest methods.

That being said, the USA has been really good to us all these years.  We treat people right and thus far have been left alone.  We also don't dip into "funky financial gambling tools", interest, or loans... I think that does help.

I have zero worries about "normal" straightforward exchanges not having any issues in the future.

If you say that whether it will survive or not, it will definitely survive, because since the beginning Bitcoin was traded with a P2P system and the first exchange was New Liberty Standard, you can read about the history through the thread created by @notocactus (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5476840.0). However, if all exchanges were globally banned, it would have a significant impact on Bitcoin’s price, possibly causing a sharp drop. Even so, such a scenario is practically impossible, as Bitcoin adoption has already grown so massive that it is simply too big to be stopped.

A lot of Bitcoin is changing hands even today in P2P style, people just have no idea about these things. We are not just talking about a couple hundred dollar trades, we are talking about millions in daily volume in P2P no KYC style trading worldwide. Now when you factor in the risk that is involved here and the convenience of using normal exchanges, one can easily presume that should exchanges be banned that the volume would easily skyrocket into the billions area. The risk of a blanket ban of exchanges is so irrelevant that we should instead consider planet killer asteroids first.

Why do you think countries will ban crypto exchanges? I don’t think that’s going to happen, and if countries ban crypto exchanges, definitely it’s going to affect bitcoin price, we going to see a sharp dump in bitcoin price, but that doesn’t mean bitcoin is going to die or if bitcoin price dumps, it’s not going to recover.

If countries decide to ban crypto exchanges for no reason, then you should know that the citizens will still look for ways to access those exchanges that are banned, because we already know that if the government is banning exchanges, then they are indirectly fighting against bitcoin, and we all know they doing it for their own selfish interest. So we going to people looking for a way to access those exchanges.

Nothing. It will still survive no matter what. But most probably, since buying and selling will be limited, bitcoin’s value will experience a price decline at the start, but it will recover in time. But talking about survival, for sure it will certainly survive even without centralized exchanges around.

In fact, these exchanges are just a threat to those decentralized ones, so at least since bitcoin is a decentralized asset, then transactions should be done in a decentralized exchange as well. That way, Satoshi will probably be smiling.

There must be a reason why all countries will ban crypto exchanges together, if there is no reason then suppose all countries will not ban crypto exchanges together. Which should not be imagined but even if we imagine then I will say if all countries ban cryptocurrency exchanges together then definitely a reverse system will come out because crypto currency has now come very close to people all over the world and people are most attracted to crypto currency. So which will never happen and even if it happens then definitely the reverse system will be there, it is 100% sure.

~Snip

AFAIK, FTX collapses had nothing to do with Bitcoin, it was panic and fear of the exchange not liquid that hurt the price, the exchange token was worth billions became nothing. When the FUD was subdue, the price came back afterwards. The Mt.gox incident was what I can recall that hurt Bitcoin price and trust of excajan because Bitcoin were stolen but there has been ongoing gradual distribution as there is approval of court before another batch transaction will take place.

If exchanges are banned, there is no room to panic or run away. All they have to do is to allow people withdraw their Bitcoin it's as simple as that. We will pivot everyone back to decentralized exchanges as it used to be but the question is, are countries that dumb to run away from free taxes? I don't think all countries are going to comply. Bitcoin isn't an illicit asset to call for the ban of exchanges except if the exchanges are supporting activities that are illegal.

My reply was mostly about the price going down enough it never recovers to print ATH after ATH. When FTX collapsed, it was bad pr not just for crypto but for Bitcoin as well which was why the price went downhill. When mt gox hack happened and the FTX saga occurred, the government might move to ban exchanges as a means to protect stop bitcoin. Both incidents are similar to government shutting down the exchanges because mt gox got shut down. FTX exchange shut down too but bitcoin prevailed in all.

That was the point I was trying to drive home earlier.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?
How it can happen? Since more countries are trying to have their Bitcoin reserve, I personally doubt this can happen. Moreover, US and China are leading the Bitcoin holding among the countries in the world. So, it is quite big reason that Bitcoin could survive stronger in the future. Instead of being banned in all countries, I even assume there will be more exchanges among the countries in the world.

Congrats, you win the Most Stupid Question of the Month award.
I think it isn't a stupid question, everyone can deliver any question. However, I assume he actually can answer it himself. He has been in this forum since 2017, he knows well about Bitcoin existence and its adoption around the world.  Smiley

Exactly I agree Bitcoin value first grew naturally means people traded it with each other. Creation of Mt. Gox boosted this growth making it easier for people worldwide to buy and sell Bitcoin. Governments ignored Bitcoin first thinking it was temporary trend but as it became more valuable they started to worry about its use for illegal activities. This led them to force centralized exchanges to require user KYC with this they trying to control technology designed to be free from control. But most people see Bitcoin as investment other than as pay for things and exchanges are big part of that. Bitcoin open ability to send money directly between people would still work even without them. Entire story of Bitcoin is continuous struggle between its original idea of decentralization and rules of traditional financial system.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?
To reach a consensus like that, pretty tough considering every government has its own values and they like to contradict each other, specially the East and the West (forgot the Cold war?)

But assuming such things happen, there are going to workarounds. Bans are always circumvented, it just a matter of how and when. One cant go against what a human desires, if they want to evade it, they will build a method to evade it. Survival of bitcoin does not depend on exchanges, it depends on you and if you are using bitcoin.

Also currently governments are becoming pro-crypto and thus this is unlikely to happen.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ?

When that happens, demand will drop drastically, impacting the price of Bitcoin (BTC). We can't lie to ourselves that the current price of Bitcoin (BTC) is largely influenced by pro Bitcoin (BTC) policies implemented in many countries. So, if those countries don't support or in other words ban Bitcoin (BTC), then we'll see a crash in it's price.

Can it survive such an action ?

Bitcoin (BTC) isn't something evil, because of that, I think Bitcoin (BTC) will survive even with underground movements. It's not wise to avoid something good, after all, the idea of all countries banning Bitcoin (BTC) is just a utopia, because in fact currently countries are competing to have Bitcoin (BTC) strategic reserve.

Starting with P2P transactions, P2P trades, Bitcoin users had exchanges to trade on third party platforms. Over time, with better adoption for Bitcoin, Bitcoin users have have more options to do their trades through P2P, Centralized Exchanges, Decentralized Exchanges, and other methods like giftcards for example.

Pizza for Bitcoins?
Raw Thai Honey (First 40 BTC of profits go to the forum!) 8 KG for sale!
Very early Bitcoin exchanges.

Governments like the USA and CIA put their eyes on Bitcoin years ago but they did not shut it down and wasted golden time to do this. Now it is impossible for them to shut Bitcoin network down after it has reached to very good decentralization and strong network status.

Gavin will visit the CIA.

All countries are not going to ban exchanges, not now that more countries are picking interest in bitcoin. There are many interests in global politics that will make it practically impossible for all the countries of the world to ban cryptocurrency exchanges and by implication bitcoin. Rather than an exchanges, countries will explore the option of taxing users for trading cryptocurrency in exchanges or at the point of withdrawal like Kucoin is already doing.

Congrats, you win the Most Stupid Question of the Month award.
I think it isn't a stupid question, everyone can deliver any question. However, I assume he actually can answer it himself. He has been in this forum since 2017, he knows well about Bitcoin existence and its adoption around the world.  Smiley
Discussing and considering scenarios that are never going to happen is not a good use of anyone's time. There are many interesting topics that are relevant, problems to be debated and solved. This is not one of them.

What would happen to Bitcoin’s value if all countries banned crypto exchanges together ? Can it survive such an action ?

if every country banned crypto exchanges at the same time.. bitcoins value would probably fall sharply in the short term because most people use exchanges as the easiest way to buy & sell... without them liquidity would dry up and panic selling could happen

but banning exchanges doesn’t mean bitcoin itself dies.. the network is global and runs on thousands of computers that can’t just be turned off... people could still trade p2p use dex or even swap bitcoin for goods & services directly.. it would be harder and less convenient even maybe more expensive but not impossible

so the price would likely suffer badly at first but the idea of bitcoin (money outside government control) might become even more attractive to some people under those bans in the long run.. survival is possible but only with a smaller and more determined community using it in creative ways
