Recently there has been news of Windows 11 update ( KB5063878 & KB5062660) killing SSD's and HDD's. So I strongly urge everyone not to install any updates and make sure to pause it for as long as possible. It is said that these particular updates are causing data loses and corruption as well as making the SSD being inaccessible/vanishing. Many of the famous brands are already effected, including Samsung, Corsair, ADATA, WD, Seagate. This is tested by X user Nekorusukii. 1. This bug is trigged when writing large amounts of data (50GB at 60%+ usage according to Nekorusukii). So for the time being do not move/write any data! 2. And uninstall those two updates above as soon as possible. I have one of those mentioned effected model SSD, but luckily I haven't updated my system yet, so no damage so far! More Details : 1. https://x.com/Necoru_cat/status/19561303930502433252. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/ssds/latest-windows-11-security-patch-might-be-breaking-ssds-under-heavy-workloads-users-report-disappearing-drives-following-file-transfers-including-some-that-cannot-be-recovered-after-a-reboot\I assumed the majority of people here use Windows, so I'm posting this in the "Beginners & Help" board since it felt like the most appropriate place.

Seriously... i literally moved from windows 10 to 11 just yesterday after receiving so many notifications that Microsoft would stop issuing software updates for 10 in September, only to come across this thread. Luckily for me, i intentionally paused the windows update that same yesterday, with the intention of resuming on Monday which is tomorrow. I just checked. A few updates have been made so far, but the actual two you pointed out have not been installed yet...I will have to do a follow up on this. Thanks for the info Op.

Such update can really affect those who have full node on their device. Seriously... i literally moved from windows 10 to 11 just yesterday after receiving so many notifications that Microsoft would stop issuing software updates for 10 in September, only to come across this thread.
I couldn't careless, been seeing such message on my device and who cares if they don't give an update to my win 10 anymore, it's very good update so those update data wouldn't accumulate on the device, they are useless anyway.

You are welcome. Just make sure to keep everything on hold until Microsoft releases a patch.
I’m currently on Windows 11 but I haven’t experienced the same problem. Looking at the updates in the list, I think they’re legit coming from Windows itself, so how could they be causing issues? Wouldn’t Microsoft be able to catch this?

Apparently they didn't. Like I said in my post, this issue is triggered when you try to write massive data. For example moving a zip file of 50GB at 60% SSD uses and more. You should immediately uninstall this particular version of update and not write any large data for the time being.
Such update can really affect those who have full node on their device.
Yup it would be a nightmare. Specially if one is from a non technical background a normal user. It would be a pain in the ass to even recover those data, not to mention there are no instructions.

Currently I used window 10 and update as well as around each one or two weeks but for update taking almost 30 to 50 minutes all running completed, getting surprised with OP notification don't update window 11 during every week I got notification about "On October 14, window 10 will stop receiving technical support of free update". Its mean we must update as soon as possible for window 11 but hearing bad news about OP thread I am confusing what have to do update or keep stay with window 10.
I am excited waiting another respond or opinion about what have to do keep stay with window 10 or updating to window 11 although I heard any bad news for our computer security when updating to window 11.

Ah! Thank you so much for this vital update. I'm totally in the dark about it. I think I need to start following Microsoft on X and other possible outlets. This would have caused issues for so many now. How careless is that? I am still using Windows 10, and intend to keep it until I buy another laptop. I've also stopped any further updates because of the annoyance of updating Windows. I prefer the last version to the current one I'm using, for some updates will be like a downgrade, slow and full of what I can term light bugs.

It seems source of the news is just single X tweet. I'm not saying the one who made that tweet is lying, but there's possibility the actual reason/cause is something else. Such update can really affect those who have full node on their device.
And anyone who copy/write a lot to their storage drive.

Well I guess its true and people could read here https://www.windowslatest.com/2025/08/20/microsoft-is-investigating-windows-11-kb5063878-ssd-data-corruption-failure-issue/That's so bad since they release an update like that without checking if its really working and will not damage to their clients. Lucky I didn't think about updating my windows 10 to 11 since it happens this is really huge hassle on my side for taking out their current latest update.

Consulting the AI got this > Here’s what’s happening with Windows 11 updates KB5063878 and KB5062660 — especially regarding HDDs and SSDs: Storage Device Issues (SSDs & HDDs)- Reports have surfaced that Windows 11’s August 2025 update, particularly KB5063878, is causing certain SSDs and even HDDs to disappear from the system during or after heavy write workloads (e.g., copying large files or installing big game updates over 50 GB). This often occurs when the drive is more than 60% full. Microsoft and Phison (a NAND controller manufacturer) are investigating.
(PC Gamer, Tom's Hardware, Windows Central, Windows Latest, TechRadar, BleepingComputer, borncity.com)
- Affected SSDs include models using Phison NAND controllers (especially DRAM-less models), and others like:
- WD Blue SN5000, WD Blue SA510
- Corsair MP510, MP600
- SK Hynix Platinum P41
- Adata SP580, Fikwot FN955, Kioxia Exceria Plus G4, SanDisk Extreme Pro 3D M.2
- Other drives using InnoGrit or Maxio controllers
- Symptoms observed:
- SSDs disappearing from OS and sometimes BIOS
- SMART data becoming unreadable
- Some drives recover after reboot, while others suffer permanent data corruption requiring recovery or reformatting
Other Reported Issues- Streaming/NDI performance:
- After KB5063878 (and KB5063709 on Win10), some users reported audio/video lag and stuttering in NDI streaming tools like OBS, particularly with RUDP protocol.
- Workaround: switch to TCP or standard UDP.
(Tom's Guide)
- Recovery Tools Broken:
- Updates disrupted “Reset this PC” and “Fix problems using Windows Update” on some systems.
- Rollback and recovery may fail until Microsoft releases an emergency patch.
(Tom's Hardware)
[/list] What You Should Do- Delay or uninstall KB5063878 and KB5062660 if you rely on large file transfers or use known affected SSDs.
- Back up important data (follow the 3-2-1 backup rule).
- Monitor updates from Microsoft and SSD makers, especially Phison.
- Avoid heavy write workloads until a confirmed fix is released.

Thank you for sharing this information, as I was one of those also affected and this also cost me losing my SSD card on my windows, what I will advise is for us not to make any updates while using the latest version of the windows, this is an horrible experience for me, because I got to lose 1tb capacity SSD storage, this got me after detecting for the installation of an apk app on my device which was what introduced this attack at the first place, as I've suspected. Here's my advice for any windows user, don't update for any updates the system gives, once you made the first one after buying your system, then don't update any further requests, instead postpone it and keep repeating the process, I do click for remind me after 5 weeks option and that's all, then I keep repeating the process at any request.

It is very dangerous if someone experiences this, especially if it results in the loss of important data, such as data related to cryptocurrency wallets. If that happens, it might still be possible to recover it using a recovery application, as we know that each storage has its own sectors, and as long as it hasn't been replaced or overwritten, so it is still possible as far as I know. A well-known YouTuber discussed this issue and provided a tutorial on how to uninstall the update or roll back the update. I think you should know this, and hopefully it will be helpful for those who might be stuck on this Windows patch. So, here it is: Youtube - The Latest Windows Update is Killing SSDs - Consider Rolling Back

I’m sure there are a lot of Windows users here who can share their own experience, but personally I haven’t faced any problem with Windows 11. I even checked and I have this update installed (KB5063878).
Same here, I have been using the same window 11 for a while now, and I haven’t experienced such things; and I also think that the is something Microsoft can just sort out immediately. Although, I do experience automatic rebooting on my system sometimes which I don’t think is normal, but aside from that, everything is working fine in my end. If things legit, then I will also consider changing to windows 10 to avoid losing my on my SSD because some data will be lost forever since I don’t have proper backup.

I saw a video about this a few days ago on TikTok, a guy was talking about how this particular update is causing problems, and he has tested it, and it is actually damaging or corrupting SSDs and HDDs of the device that installs the update. I'm using Windows 10, and I've also been getting a lot of notifications to update my OS to Windows 11 because Windows 10 won't get more updates after next month, but luckily, I haven't done it yet, and now I won't do it until this issue gets resolved because apart from wallets and cryptocurrency stuff, I have a lot of data in my PC that I wouldn't want to lose at all.
I didn't do much research when I heard about this, but I'm sure there hasn't been anything official about this yet. It's true that people have faced the issue and reported it, and they might be looking into it, but I haven't yet seen an official announcement or acknowledgement from Microsoft about this.
Well, hopefully they can fix the issue soon and won't let more people get affected, or it is going to be bad for their brand reputation in the market.

Apparently they didn't.
Like I said in my post, this issue is triggered when you try to write massive data. For example moving a zip file of 50GB at 60% SSD uses and more. You should immediately uninstall this particular version of update and not write any large data for the time being.
So this is what could result in a problem. Thanks for sharing this vital info. I’m not really into having huge files on my laptop since I mostly just use it for browsing and small downloads, but yeah 50GB is quite large for me. Still, I’ll keep this in mind so I’ll remember not to do it when the time comes that I need to transfer huge files.

I don't agree, I think you should "update" Windows. I recently bought a new HP laptop, and it came with Windows 11. I was shocked by all the rubbish on it, such as Copilot, and I did experiment with it for about 3 days. Then I wiped the disk, and installed Ubuntu Studio. I've been running Bodhi Linux on my Huawei laptop for everyday use, and I love it. I really can't understand why anyone would use any Microsoft products, especially when you realise what Bill Gates does with his money. Covid injections and Bovaer are just two of the health damaging products he is forcing on an increasingly unhealthy world population.

I got notification about "On October 14, window 10 will stop receiving technical support of free update".
No! Afaik, you will only stop getting the security patch updates. But the rest of the system will run as before, even with no more security update! Yes, you can use Win 10! You don't necessarily need to switch to Win 11. No worries.
It seems source of the news is just single X tweet. I'm not saying the one who made that tweet is lying, but there's possibility the actual reason/cause is something else.
Nope, the news is true. It's been verified.
If things legit, then I will also consider changing to windows 10 to avoid losing my on my SSD because some data will be lost forever since I don’t have proper backup.
No need to change. Just stop auto update and if it's already updated then just uninstall it and don't write any large data files until they patch it..
I run W-10, and I don't update it. Good for you Lol!

We are specifically talking about Windows here. I do agree Linux based distro is better but you should also consider Windows userbase. This post is intended only for win users.
Sorry for the late in responses. I have been traveling.

Let me explain. I have 6 hard drives. Each has its own operating system. One is Ubuntu. One is Mint. 3 are Linux Lite. One is Windows 10. They all have to take their turn on one box, although I have a backup box. Windows has a few unique features that Linux doesn't have. I save it for those features. I don't connect it to the Net, even though I can easily if I want. I have hardware that allows me to easily connect a second drive to the one that is running, so I can access two drives at once if I want. What this means is that I am not running Windows as my main computer. Thanks for making me aware of Bodhi Linux. I might try it on my outdated Linux Lite 6.6 drive.

Just one question! Why 6 harddrives? I have 2 SSD's and that is well above my daily needs!
