Why the forum generate random post ID on homepage?

Example I hover my pointer to the last post in Project Development board, this is the link show on the bottom left.

When I click the link, it direct me to the 16th post in page 18, the thread have 21 pages in total.

But, if we search the post ID on loyce.club or ninjastic.space, the post is different. This one is actually the post with "65097554" ID.

I mean in theory, if you are asking if it is "okay", there is nothing that stops you, so yeah it is okay, but are you sure you want to do this? I am not sure if I would want this to begin with, doesn't feel like it is okay at all. However, if we are talking about a situation where it would be better? Then yeah, it is not better.

The better one is to have a source of income first and then trade later on, that would make a lot more sense and I am sure that we are going to make more money that way. Letting your capital grow and have a bigger and bigger bankroll is a lot better option instead of taking away from it, so while in theory you are "okay" to make a trading career that way, I am not so sure it would make sense long term.

Since the post ID is random, it also direct to random post although the thread is still same. It could be show the first post, the middle post, or the last post. Isn't it supposed to show the last post?

This not happen on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=recent, it directs to correct ID.

Edit:
If you click on that link again from the home page, you will just see the last post. The assumption is that you have seen all the new replies.

That's correct, and for that reason, I've never looked closely at the postID in the link. But now that I did, it doesn't make sense. It doesn't even belong to the topic it links to.

I just clicked on the last post shown for bitcoin disscusion. The thread had 6 pages and I am sure I had never visited that.
The link redirected me to the 4th page. If the link was supposed to bring me to the oldest unread post, it would have redirected me the first page of that thread.

The link redirected me to the 4th page. If the link was supposed to bring me to the oldest unread post, it would have redirected me the first page of that thread.

@Hosemary, I literally did what you did to see if I'll get a different result from yours but no, it was same thing. Now I'm wondering why I didn't get the result @JeromeTash explained. Could it be that it's a browser issue? Like is it because I'm using a browser that's different from theirs?

Please I'll appreciate if someone with a deeper knowledge comes here and gives us a comprehensive breakdown on how to get the same result the first responder explained to us.

I opened the link and it took me to the 16th post on the 18th page but the catch is if I open the link without this last part in the link it automatically takes me to the 1st post on the 18th page.

So I want to assume that additional part points to the latest post according to the time of the reference page.

If you click on that link again from the home page, you will just see the last post. The assumption is that you have seen all the new replies.

I'm not sure but is it possible that post ID changes if you the OP edits his post? But the thing is I'm not sure if ninjastic space scrapes the post few minutes after it was edited.

For some strange reason, it's assigning a different message ID than it should. But since the topic ID has more weight in logic, it forwards to the last post by the user in that topic.

I tested it and this is exactly how it works.


I'll give you an example. I don't know Chinese, I've never entered the Chinese tab.

It is correct, except that I did make it more specific to a thread, but generally every time you visit a board, there is some sort of reset on every thread there. You can not get redirected past any new post made in the top most thread you see in the home page after the last time you have visited that board.

Try testing it out with dormant boards.

Notice that last part of the link?

It takes you to the first reply made after the last time you visited the last board or thread. If the topic is new, you will definitely see the first post (OP)

Once you visit the board or topic there is a reset to the very last topic, thus you will be able to see the complete link of the last reply. I think all this is intended so that users can easily follow the threads.

The link is taking you exactly where it has to take you. you are trying to access msg65097554, which doesn't exist in that particular topic, however, that is where SMF thinks that post "would have been" because the post above it by suchmoon has this id 64990685 and the one below it by Tryninja has this id 65127330 if 65097554 existed, it would be between these two.

An example in this topic would be https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5557308.msg65746788;boardseen#new. While post ID 65746788 doesn't exist, it falls between LoyceV post and hosemary so the forum assumes that post is "there."

Now why on earth would the forum link msg65097554 to that post is beyond me. Are you sure that is the exact link you got?

I just tested that with a few boards and you seem to be correct.
Once you visit a board, the post ID assigned to the link of the last post of that board which is shown in the home page of the forum changes and if you click on that link again, it will redirect you to the last page of a thread.
