I won't specify a specific number of years, but it's certainly more than a year. For some reasons, I consider a year to be medium-term. For Bitcoin, four years is probably the most appropriate timeframe, considering the Bitcoin cycle.

I personally strive to invest based on time horizons. This isn't easy at all, as it requires patience and sacrifice. I often experience losses in short- and medium-term investments when my predetermined time horizon is reached, and of course, we have to wait longer to see profits.

Crypto isn't like other investments, even 6 months could be a long term. But for me, it is 4 year cycle, and anything in between that period is a long term investment. So for example, 2022 year was a bear year, if you bought in 2022 when it went down, and waited until 2025 until it peaked and sold, that was a long term investment.

But if you bought in 2024 early on, and sold early in 2025, you still made a profit and that is one long term investment as well. I believe in all of these to be long term, as long as you are not day trading. Of course one week is not a long term trading, but if you can find the entry point very well and exit point very well, there are great moments between 6 to 8 months where you can make a great return.

Both of you are hitting on the point, the term long time investment does not have a specific time frame but does not mean the probability of of making profits in the short term is an investment but trading. I believe traders are short term goalers who stresses on making profits in a specific short term and that is why they looses whenever they sells at the wrong target time based on short timeframe.
Yes it might not be so easy to hold for a longer especially when you are financially struggling or your state emotions could be too fragile to be more patient. Before I answer your question, I would like you to also take some time and reason what was the price of Bitcoin in the last 10 years, which is 2015, and compare it with what the price of Bitcoin might be in the next 10 years, which will be 2035. If you see the profit range, you will understand that 10 years is not that much to wait, because if you keep that money you invest in Bitcoin as fiat in your traditional bank or even at home, in 10 years you will not be able to get any value with it, and if care is not taken, it might even lose its value due to inflation.

Furthermore, why I said 10 years is not that much is because if you look at the lives of some people, you will see that in the last 10 years some were rich but are now poor, while some are still in the same spot. So, if you are opportune to have the money to invest for a long time, why not invest it in Bitcoin and continue with your life, then in 10 years you can come back to see what you invested.

I know some will have reasons, but if you really want to invest, you will have to get that discipline and patience before you start. If not, you will not be able to go far in it, as you may end up spoiling your investment with your own hands, and in the nearest future, you will be the one to either enjoy it or suffer for it.

This is why a wise man said, the choices we make today determine our future. It is not bad for you to decide what your own definition of long time is.

We have different definition when it comes to "long-term investment". Some have 5 years (most common), some even have 10 years, and there are stupid ones that thinks that long-term for them when it comes to holding Bitcoin is "FOREVER". This is a subjective matter, and TBH, my definition of long-term investing back in 2021 caused me thousands of dollars that's why I made an adjustment this 2025 bull run.

For anyone who is just starting to invest, holding for 5 years is not something easy. Everything can be done after the understanding is acquired gradually. But rather than setting a time target, I prefer to aim for the price that will be reached. At that point, I can calculate how much of the asset I can sell and how much I will continue to hold.

Probably not, but there are "strategies" you could do to help you "sit on your hands" and not to panic when the market becomes VERY volatile. My personal favorite is set up an actual storage, and store your keys in an offline computer that will NEVER connect to the internet.

Another one is generate a paper wallet and hide it somewhere. The extra process of importing/typing your seed could stop you from doing any emotional decisions.

That is certainly right, everyone reacts to the bitcoin based on their psychological differences and view of interests. So we don't expect everyone to act the same but on this thread, we are strictly discussing about timeframe that involves minimum of long term investment and not trading as your entry method obviously state it (not holding for the long time). To my mind, long-term investment is an investment that lasts for more than 10 years. Btw in Bitcoin's case you often hear 4 year, number four because Bitcoin halving happens every 4th year, which means that the block reward gets halved and miners generate 50% less Bitcoin. In order to keep mining profitable, the price of the coin should rise or otherwise miners won't be able to mine Bitcoin, so everyone has an expectation of a bull run because of that event and that's also what happens in reality in the end. I suggest everyone to don't touch their Bitcoin investment for 4-5 years, profit during the bull run and sell the coin before the market crashes, then repeat the process again.

I count long term investment by the cycle.
If I invested from bearish to bullish, I think it's already long term. Some people will have different definition of long term. Some even willing to hold bitcoin for multiple decades.

The reason I use cycle to count is because altcoin come and go and bitcoin is following this pattern. It's a good way to get the most out of the market.

Talking about how long the investment period might be does sound ambiguous, because each person has different investment plans. Personally, i would hold on to it for as long as possible. My mindset is not just about investing to make a profit, more than that, i see investing in Bitcoin as a way to store money so it doesn't get eroded by inflation. If you keep it in a bank, the amount will remain the same, but its value will continue to decrease every year.

A short term investor ranges from a few months to 1 year.
A long term investor ranges from 6 months to as they can.

TL;DR I am selling small portions of my portfolio to cover some needs and I do DCA from my salary into the same portfolio. So I have inflows and outflows. But my portfolio returns are higher than the amount I withdraw yearly, so I have an increasing total balance.

Another one that I saw somewhere is a full quarter length. Doesn't mean like from q3 to q4, because that could be just one day difference, I mean like a full quarter length because that is how prices change in that span usually. That means 3 months, if you wait for a full three months, in most likely scenario the price will be different.

There are cases like ours right now where it doesn't change much, it could be considered nearly stable at this point, we have been between 10k and 120k for months and months now, sometimes go above a bit, sometimes go under a bit but mostly between those prices. But in most cases three months is long enough time to see it go down or go up big. That is why that does look like long term enough at minimum.

Two years is what I consider long term investment for me. And that is a very long time, maybe because I am counting it in number of days and not the number of years it self. And you know that bitcoin is fastpaced. You can make a lot of life changing money in bitcoin within the space of the two years. And when that two years reaches, I re-evaluate the what I have achieved and either continue or take profit and leave the capital to continue another cycle. That it my long term investment there.
