I want to develop a chat feature for bitcointalk, would people like this?

I think something that could liven up bitcointalk is a chat feature, it could be like a live chat where you can continuously talk with others. Think of it like a chatroom/trollbox where you could chat with many other people at once or even one on one. If there was chat I think this would make even more people stay on bitcointalk and take part in the discussion. If we wanted to we could even integrate some more complex chat features like discord or telegram does. What does everyone think about this? A chat feature integrated directly into the forum, we have bitcointalk so now we could bring some bitcoinchat into it

I would love you to read through about what members thought when this was brought up about a couple of months ago - Shoutbox? Anyone? . Most of them said it wasn't required. This means that even if it was implemented, there would be love activity, as most members just prefer the current forum set up.

This has been discussed multiple times before. The suggestion of creating a Telegram channel has been brought up, too. The same question has always been asked: "To what ends?"
There is already a "personal message" feature on the forum, which is used when necessary, so I don't see the need for a chat room. What is the purpose of the forum when there is a chatroom? Whatever can be discussed about bitcoin, altcoin or otherwise can be discussed on the forum, and if it's a more personal discussion, it can be done via PM.

I think most times, people forget that this is a discussion forum. We are here to discuss, and as long as you're not spamming or creating low-quality topics, you're good to go. So I don't see a need for a new chat feature.

This kind of question and proposal started coming when some people on this forum went to altcoinstalks, people later are bring it up. But the main thing is that it is not needed at all. Why having forum, why not just have the chat section instead. We can discuss about anything through the forum boards and threads instead. If there is any chat section on this forum, I am one of the people that will not use it because there is nothing that I will gain from there.

This has been mentioned multiple times already, and a quick look through the Meta subforum you'll find that it has been suggested quite a few times already, @logfiles has also quoted the original post which received quite a bit of attention, but most members claimed that it wasn't necessary. The antagonizing forum has it, and it's been used by its members, but I personally don't find it necessary, while it could also be used for spam and would require extra moderation. It does provide a nice, live and direct touch to the community, but I don't think it's a worthy feature.

More trolls and spam written in some chat would not help bitcointalk forum at all, and we have other forums as a proof for that.
It would be just be a waste of time and resources, and it could potentially create more ground for hackers to attack the forum.

I've seen this particular feature on another SMF forum (altcoins talks to be precise). Well although it's a nice and fun feature It's not something that's utterly important and it may end up being buggy because of the traffic volume of this forum. If it's something you intend to create as probably an extension some people may eventually use them

Aside that, if you intend making something like a patch for the forum I don't think the admin would be accepting it besides, I don't think I would even support the motion of making that level of modification to the forum.

That forum has loads of dead periods where noone chats so it's a good example for the OP to check out and see how useless it really would be. It sounds great but after a week you'll notice that the same 10 people are the ones chatting.

We also had a discord server for the forum IIRC and not many were active in there either. People who are interested in chatting are more interested in chatting privately not publicly.

Personally, I don’t think a chat feature would be a good fit for Bitcointalk. One of the strengths of this forum is the structured nature of discussions, posts are searchable, quotable and preserved for years. A live chatroom on the other hand, encourages short-lived and less thoughtful interactions that might lower the overall quality. Platforms like Telegram or Discord already serve that purpose well.
For me, Bitcointalk’s value is in its permanence and depth not instant messaging which is why I seriously do not  think the admin will approve this proposal.

One thing I personally like about this forum is the fact that modifications are not just made out of the blue except it's of high importance. You'll find out that making too many modification would give room for loopholes and bugs that can be used against the forum.

Sometimes I just like to believe that it's part of the major reasons the admin doesn't accept modification offers and ideas that easy. Let's not even forget the fact that the forum even has bounties for different bugs that can't be explioted.

Then be ready to welcome spams! And a lot of em in fact! If that happens, which i think won't, then the admin will have to assign additional mods to moderate the chatbox! Lol! Because it will be heavily abused! Btw is this idea of chatbox coming from alttalk? They don't have massive traffic as btt that's why there is less spam/abuse in that feature, but when we are talking about btt, everyone would their shares of chats! And trolls and spammers are no exception! So no!

Perhaps op, since is private chat opportunity in bitcointalk (PM) I don’t think there will be more chat room better than the private messaging.

Additionally, are we not chatting already? Like commenting and quoting one another is that not enough chat? Because basically I see everything we do here as a live chat, if I say something you like, just like any media to you can merit it like the reaction buttons in social medias.

Actually, everyone likes this forum as it is. If the admin wanted, they could have converted this forum to a modern website long ago. But in that case, maybe many people would not have liked it.

I saw the chat feature on the altcointalk forum. It is not used that much there, maybe because of the low number of users. However, I think that if admin give that feature to this forum, spamming will be more since this forum is very popular. However, if a separate moderator is appointed for chat section, maybe spamming can be reduced.

Do you want to additionally oblige moderators to work on moderating chats? And are you sure that the moderators will be satisfied with this? 24/7 staring into the chat moderating flood streams?

People use the forum because they are not only old man like me, but also because is a nice way to find info.
If you had a "chat", first would be completely full of scammers (yes these are also on the forum but there trolls /scammers could be hiden more easily).
Info would not be easily available... And there are already dozens of similar places.

There are some official Bitcointalk forum accounts on other platforms.
[LIST] Official Bitcointalk forum accounts. Discord is one of them and it is useful for chats and hosting events like Bitcoin pizza.

It is for serious discussions while spam is still here, it's less spam than in Telegram.

It's better for privacy here than with Telegram with phone number for registration and since an arrest of Pavel Durov in France, Telegram started to store user login IP and their messenger changed a lot since then.
