This figure is striking for Sweden. Using up 1% of disposable income on gambling places it really higher than the UK, but that of Australia is yet on the high levels. This shows that the pressure of online casinos and betting has become really strong, mostly in highly digital societies. The comparison of te Philippines shows the importance of regulation, where official numbers understate the real spending. Above all, it is of the opinion that Sweden is edging ahead of the higher tier of gambling rate having online bet as the key pilot.

I haven't found any statistics revealing which percentage of Spaniards' income (I mean, in my country) is spent in gambling, but I would say that 1% could be quite an accurate amount: taking into account that the average income here is €1,800/month that would be $20 bucks or so, in line with what you said. Although salaries in Spain are lower than in Sweden, I think that we have a culture more prone to gambling and "fiesta" in general.

Accurate or not, I think that the 1% limit is a very healthy one, although the average can be tricky and doesn't necessarily mean that most gamblers will spend around that figure.

Well, the population number is important.

1% of disposable income goes to gambling is a good percentage, if we're talking about per each gambler.

But, if the 1% of disposable income from Sweden goes to gambling, someone could gamble 100% of their disposable income, 100% of their monthly salary, while other people gamble 0.01% of disposable income, and they might even not a gambler at all.

Anyway, why when I click the article, it doesn't show like what this thread was talking about?

I am pretty sure that for most people more than 1% of disposable income goes to drinking, smoking and doing drugs. I think there is no issue with 1% going to gambling.  Cheesy

I don't understand why the state should tell me how much of my money to use, what does it matter to them?
Even now, if you want to withdraw money from your bank account, you have to ask permission. Are we crazy? You might as well keep it in a safe deposit box.
Read a book for a change instead of shitposting here. When you ruin your life and become an addict you start creating problems for other people and often directly for the state. The state benefits a lot if its population its physically and mentally healthy.

The relative comparison is striking but it is not the point of this topic though. The data for countries has been included just to provide a context for relative comparison. The question is more whether 1% is too much in general or not.

Anyway, why when I click the article, it doesn't show like what this thread was talking about?

Even if that is true, I think 1% is acceptable. But is that only in physical casinos or does it include online casinos? Because we never know how much money people will spend in an online casino. It is right, the gambling regulator can monitor the number but when it goes to online casino, I am not sure they can do that because people can play at home. They don't have to report it to the regulator but I don't know about that. I also use small money to gamble so that's okay for me.

It’s indicated in the OP that it’s the total profit on gambling industry including online and physical casino. Online casino and betting contributes a lot for that profit.

Most of it came from online casinos and betting. Disposable income BTW is ( salary - taxes + benefits).

What I’m confused is the attached link for reference is just an article containing taxes for horse racing only not with the total taxes in casino.

Look up 2 posts, I just addressed this. You can discuss this topic even without an accurate link, but nevertheless I found one from 2 years ago that provides the same number as is indicated in this thread.

Anyway, why when I click the article, it doesn't show like what this thread was talking about?

In Sweden, the gambling regulator reported that almost 1% of disposable income went to gambling in 2024, about €2.5B total. Most of it came from online casinos and betting. Disposable income BTW is ( salary - taxes + benefits).

For comparison:

Australia – often cited as the highest per capita gambling spend, closer to 3–4% of disposable income in some year
UK – sits roughly around 0.7–0.9%, depending on the measure
Philippines – it's hard to measure because of offshore/illegal markets... ( not well regulated)
I like these stats. I like to see it cross different continents. I know that we cannot get for different countries so the continents will be better. Another thing is that this data is from developed western nations, in developing countries with high poverty rates and low income rates, I know that the stats will be different. I can even guess that, in these countries, it is going be more than 5% of income that is not even disposable that will go into gambling.

It's almost bro, almost, not even meet 1%. I can assume sweeden has the same percentage as UK, and i think that's normal. However, i can't really trust that report caused by in fact, it's not all of gamblers are being transparent about how much % of their disposable income goes to their gambling account.
Some said 5%, 10%, 15%, 25% or even more than it. I think that report is not really accurate at all.

How about we apply it to our personal income, then answer the question whether it is normal or too much.  I think we all agree that it is for a personal level so little and can be hardly even say normal what more too much.

If on still can't picture how much it would be in personal level, let us assume a regular person earn around $66,622 per annum less the tax and benefits I think it will sit around $55,000 per annum, the 1% of that amount is around $550.  So, from $55,000, a person is gambling around $550.  Isn't this not that much?

In my opinion, if only 1% of total income is spent on gambling, this is a very good figure, because in my country it is not uncommon for people to use more than 30% of their income for gambling, which is a very large figure compared to 1%. Most of them cannot control their emotions after getting involved in gambling, using most of their income for gambling. They consider gambling to be the fastest way to get rich, and of course this is accompanied by greed, which leads to poor results in the end.

Therefore, it is important to view gambling solely as a form of entertainment when feeling tired or stressed from real-life work, 1% is reasonable for seeking entertainment. I think it's acceptable as long as all basic needs are met (without compromising essential requirements).

The report may not be totally accurate but it can be accurate to some extent. Know that not everyone are gamblers, but salaries of those that are not gamblers are also calculated before making the percentage. Also those that are addicted can not be known with the calculation. These are what I can say will make such report not accurate. And lastly is the fact about what you posted, some gamblers may not use local sites and they may not get information from the foreign sites that they are using.

Australia – often cited as the highest per capita gambling spend, closer to 3–4% of disposable income in some year
UK – sits roughly around 0.7–0.9%, depending on the measure
Philippines – it's hard to measure because of offshore/illegal markets... ( not well regulated)
1% is pretty low honestly. If every household was to stick to that it would be extremely responsible, but look at the amount of streamers you see. Look at the amount of gambling advertisements you see. Look at the amount of irresponsible gamblers you see. These numbers are only what is reported as well, what about those numbers that aren't reported? I'd say the actual % is closer to 10% IMO.

Knowing per capita income along with that 1% spending, can give us more details but anyway it's just an average value doesn't necessarily mean more people are gambling, it's just a sign that how much money is spent on gambling and it's accurate because where the data re recorded and users choose the regulated ones. But in a country like China I bet the numbers are quite high but it's not happening on the traditional casino we may not aware of the real extent.

First of all, before your question can be answered accurately, we need to know how many people are gambling in Sweden and what is their population in the country.

Recommended percentage to gamble with is 1%.
If 100% population in the country are gambling, that is not too much at all but that is huge. But it is not possible for everybody in the country to be gambling.
Yes, if we are considering a large percentage of the country's population is gambling, then 1% is a reasonable amount of money going into gambling every year. However, if it's just a minor percentage of total population which is gambling, then it can be a worrying situation, as it means there are few people losing too much money to gambling in Sweden, what may indicate signals of addiction and impulsivity.

For me, 1% is already a fairly high amount for betting alone. I expected it to be lower or even higher, as is the case in the UK, which is a benchmark in this sector. In any case, I consider it significant and hope governments make good use of this tax revenue.

I think it depends on the amount of income and whether all their income is enough to sustain themselves and their family. In my opinion, if the salary is already not that big one should not gamble anymore. But with a huge salary, these percentages are not scary enough for me.

1% is pretty small, i could at least take 5-8% from my income for gambling and that won't be a problem, it won't affect any thing as i'm not something who gamble regularly. Bit to those who gamble more often this is good decision and discipline to start with for self-controls.

Depending on the country and each citizen's personal income, the amount can be considerable. Using Sweden as an example, the amount spent of €2.5 billion, converted to my country's local currency is six times more, a revenue that in taxes alone could be used to benefit thousands, if not millions, of citizens, whether for healthcare, education, or even food.

For some countries it may be a lot and for others it is normal, in Brazil this value can be considered very high for some workers, who receive much less than the minimum wage defined by law.

Well 1% of an economic is very huge in terms of total money spent on gambling but 1% at the same time is not really some kind of big deal since 1 out of hundreds is very small yet just as the first guy said not possible everyone over there gambles so it varies that the 1% of the people there spend their disposable income into gambling and maybe 70% is the actual gamblers hence the amount spend on gambling will be significantly normal in my opinion, it is not yet beyond normal, it still has some level of requirements to be abnormal and the gambling differences has not yet increased significantly.
