What do you guys think, is this real momentum or just temporary hype? If you look at these numbers, it can be considered a genuine expansion of the gambling industry. There is no hint of hype, as the numbers continue to rise, not just in the US, but also as a global trend. Based on Industry (2024‑2025 revenue), the gambling industry ranks 10-12 with a revenue of 80 billion. There is a huge possibility that it will move up to the 8th place if the trend continues to grow. New casinos will emerge despite stiff competition. Countries will continue to relax their regulations to generate more taxes, and new gamblers will emerge every year.

These stats are already old. The growth has reached over 100b USD already and it's bound to grow as the industry expands in more states, sports and advertising bans are lifted nationwide.
Yeah, this year is going to end in few months and a statistics of 2 years back could be considered as old and out dated in my opinion as well. At least if it included the stats of last year (2024), then we may assume like it is about the stats of completed years. Still, the take away from the stats is, how rapidly grow among Americans, then I guess it is still worth to discuss on this stats. Definitely, more mobile phone capabilities to access the gambling site with ease and advertisments are one of the main reasons that people start to gamble.
Yeah, easier access to gambling must be the core reason why and how gambling rapidly growing, meanwhile some governments are banning gambling but I guess most gamblers will learn and find new means of gambling to bypass such restrictions. I am always against irresponsible gambling hence rapid growth of gambling adaption is a real concern to me.

Surely part of the rapid growth was previously hidden in people who bet underground and did not appear in the statistics, although I do not believe that most of the growth was due to this. As has been said, bans have been lifted, and this, combined with massive advertising and easy access via mobile phones, explains the rapid growth. I would bet that in countries where sports betting has been regulated for some time and gambling ads are banned or heavily restricted there has not been such rapid growth.

It is not a hype neither is it momentary. Most businesses have gone online since COVID-19 and the slight recession it caused. If you want to grow a business now then you must have to acquire an online presence for you to make more market. Many social media space have opened up, some skit makers now advertise different trading and gambling apps, so I'm not surprised at the growth and gains in the gambling sector both in US or elsewhere. Even in Nigeria, the rate of gambling has increased because of online availability. So the progress is not temporary but we are going to see more. Here in the forum, casinos keep springing up and they have patronizers because if they don't then new casinos won't open up.

I was checking some stats and this one really caught my eye. In 2019, legal sports betting in the U.S. only made around $0.9B. Fast forward to 2023, and it already hit $10.9B in revenue. That’s more than a ten-fold jump in just four years. Total wagers? Over $119B placed by Americans last year.
Makes me wonder, what’s fueling this surge? Is it mainly: * more states opening up to legal betting, *the convenience of mobile apps and live wagering, *or nonstop marketing that made betting feel “normal” already? Big question is, can this growth really last or is the U.S. just catching up after legalization? From under $1B to almost $11B in a few years, that’s huge. If it can happen there, could we see the same worldwide, or will stricter rules and backlash eventually slow it down? What do you guys think, is this real momentum or just temporary hype? It is fascinating to see the trajectory that sports betting revenue has taken but America has always been the richest and highest spending consumer in the world, they simply did not have this outlet available legally to them before and we can really see the pent up demand that always existed. I have a feeling that this number is nowhere near the top, as state by state the laws are relaxing around betting and they are all competing to draw in companies that can help generate tax. It's crazy that it took America so long to legalize sports betting again, when they are usually so progressive around personal freedoms, but like Cannabis - once these movements get going it'll be almost impossible to reverse them again.

Honestly there are many factors that actually contributed to this increase and I believe one of the major ones actually is the increase in the number of casinos. Basically more casinos mean more options for people and sometimes those casinos create a sort of gambling atmosphere with different sorts of competitions from bonuses to wagering requirements. Online gambling has a lot of advantages to the general gambling ecosystem and contributed alot to those stats. Gombe statistics a couple of years ago around the 90s when online casinos weren't really a thing were far lower than today's value.

Is it mainly: * more states opening up to legal betting, *the convenience of mobile apps and live wagering, *or nonstop marketing that made betting feel “normal” already? The period you are analyzing was a long period during the Covid-19 pandemic, when everyone was confined to their homes due to the lockdown, and everyone spent a lot of time online. Many people passed the time by gambling because they needed a source of entertainment while confined to their homes, and gambling was one of those sources. And no one could easily forget the habit they had at that time, so the influence of gambling has not been cut off from them. And the lucrative advertising of gambling sites and sponsorships by various big clubs have attracted people more towards sports betting. So, gambling adoption is increasing day by day, not only in the US but also in the whole world.

The United States didn't see a significant shift toward easing gambling laws until the 2018 Supreme Court ruling overturning the federal ban on sports betting. This decision allowed states to legalize sports betting, increasing the number of states legalizing this activity. I was surprised to find that some US states, such as Texas and Alabama, prohibit all forms of gambling. Also, online gambling is still prohibited in many places in the US states. https://rocklandtimes.com/2024/08/15/a-state-by-state-guide-to-legal-gambling-in-the-u-s/

You're comparing pre-COVID times with the current situation. It seems to me that, firstly, thanks to the COVID restrictions, any online business has grown dramatically, literally by tens of times. I remember this from games and their economies (selling in-game items for real money). Secondly, since 2019, the number of dollars seems to have at least doubled? So, if you adjust for the issuance of money, the gambling business has grown not tenfold, but only by a few. As for trends, it's difficult to predict how things will develop. Perhaps gambling has already reached saturation and will not experience further growth. Perhaps the market is overheated (there will be a decline), or perhaps growth will continue. Much depends on regulators.

With the way it’s going I don’t see the momentum slowing down, if care is not taken and gambling space is not properly managed it’s going to keep increasing till the point where it becomes a major problem, not only in America but worldwide.
Incase you haven’t noticed, states where people used to view gambling as a form of misconduct or where those who participated in gambling activities were considered wayward are no longer viewed like that again and that just tells you how much this whole thing is going to keep increasing.

Yeah this is actually one of the reasons why Las Vegas is hurting right now. Sport betting was a huge stream of income for Vegas and now that you can do it online. Nobody goes to Vegas anymore. And since there is less traffic it means less hotels and airline tickets and attractions.
Sure for some it’s the high cost of everything in Vegas and also the tariffs. There is also Trump pissing off a lot international travels but the fact that online sport betting rose such a large amount is causing many to lose jobs in Las Vegas.

This growth could be either most of the gambling site are now accepting cryptocurrency and since the acceptance of cryptocurrency in gambling site especially Bitcoin, gambling site has been making a tremendous growth over the past few years especially online casinos. Of course, there could be chances that this growth could be as a cause of legalization and more adverts over every where and in most of the state as well.

Many people did not go to work during covid-19 lockdown and they know about gambling from there. I am not sure but I read news about that at the time.
Definitely, more mobile phone capabilities to access the gambling site with ease and advertisments are one of the main reasons that people start to gamble. Gambling sites does not use advertisements to joke at all because they know its benefits.
The growth will continue.
It is not just happening in United States but also happening in countries that gambling is allowed.
It is really happening everywhere these days because there are more devices in the hands of most persons with clear Internet access to these sites than before. Also is the fact that the rate of advertising has tripped because jackpot winners get announced and even given a grand ovation on TV commercials, so one gets to think this is possible and go all in. The growth will triple mostly with the possibilities that crypto currency has offered and am sure more countries would get to legalize it for revenue sake.

Everything is supposed to grow, that is why we saw 10x in 5 years which looks possible.
But more regulations and keeping all the records can also be a reason why it jumped on top of that sports are growing at the same rate too and Americans are always fond of betting on their favorites and now it's just possible with few taps in their hands is making to bet more?
Well, it's all just speculation from my side and I am no expert in the statistics field.

Life is difficulty, so everyone tries to earn more money and sports betting is one of the ways the internet told people it's easy to make a living. Also there's a lot more advertisements for gambling websites that can be found all over the place on tv, news, emails, and here in the forum. I think gambling will keep growing more with the years, in Brazil it's a lot bigger now with slots and the regulation of bets. The COVID-19 pandemic creates a huge opportunity for online gambling to boom since have nothing to do that time rather than gambling as form of entertainment since the majority of worker still receives pays even at home.
Those non gambler becomes curios on gambling and try it. Even in my country, there’s a lot of new form of online gambling was introduced even though people here normally don’t play online gambling pre pandemic.
And besides more free time people also need more money now that inflation sky rocketed and it's more expensive to live all over the world. It's a chance to get out of the poverty for many people, but sadly it almost never works.

It seems like it's just a temporary sensation, this season there are quite a lot of matches that are of interest so it's natural that the surge in betting volume has increased not only in the US but in most countries, both legal and illegal in their respective countries, everything will subside again, but there will still be an increase in active players.

I think the growth will probably continue for a few more years, but eventually there’ll be issues that put more pressure on gamblers, like higher taxes. At some point, governments are going to want a bigger cut from the gambling industry. Also, I don’t think every state will see the same level of growth. Some places have really strict rules and regulations that could hold the industry back from expanding the way it has in others.

It seems like it's just a temporary sensation, this season there are quite a lot of matches that are of interest so it's natural that the surge in betting volume has increased not only in the US but in most countries, both legal and illegal in their respective countries, everything will subside again, but there will still be an increase in active players.
I doubt it’s a temporary sensation. Gambling isn’t something that you can just do and then leave till next season again, if you felt the urge to gamble and did it for sometime there is a high chance that you’d look for other matches to bet on when a season finally ends. So this increase might keep going because a lot of those who are involved in it are still going to keep gambling one way or another. If they happened to win during their play, it will even increase the chance of them playing because that thought of them winning more will still be there and they’ll want to keep playing and see if they’ll be lucky - this single thought has made so many people become addicted to gambling.

If there will be more wealth and money and more Internet generations (people), I think only what we are going to see is that more people will prefer to bet and more money will flow to gambling industry. There is nothing that can subside about this at all than the gambling sites having more advertisements and new gambling sites will also come and more people will gamble. In 2025, the commerical gambling revenue in the United States surpassed $19 billion already. US commercial gaming revenue hits $19.44B in Q2 2025, up 9.8% YoY. The gaming industry in the United States is growing exponentially. The American Gaming Association (AGA) has published a report showing that the industry has gained $19.44 billion in commercial gaming revenue.

What do you guys think, is this real momentum or just temporary hype?
That's the effect of Lionel Messi in the US. Messi moved to the Major league soccer in 2023 and since then the US league has become more famous. More Americans and now interested in watching football and from watching football they are now getting exposed to gambling sites marketing. This might not be the only factor, but you can't talk about this sudden surge without putting this into consideration. Many will argue about this but this is one of the factors I think.
