Have you ever experienced a Bitcoin hack or security breach involving your cryptocurrency holdings? If so, how did it happen, and what steps have you taken since then to protect yourself from similar incidents in the future? What were the key lessons you learned from that experience?

Bitcoin hack: You mean the Bitcoin network is getting compromised or what? Bitcoin has had a past history with the network being compromised, which was immediately resolved. That was still during the early days as Satoshi was still very active.

But if its a wallet hack, that has nothing to do with bitcoin being hacked, but its user's wallet that was compromised, to protect yourself from such an incident you need to be careful with how you interact online and what you click, the type of wallet you use and the rest of them, it's better to make use of cold wallet for maximum security than trusting hot wallet which can easily be compromised by any little mistake from your end.

I'd say 99% of company hacks are internal scams that are pawned off as hack.

Twice, it happened to me twice in the past.

I kept my Bitcoin wallet recovery seed in my email account, hackers got the email good and stole my Btc, it wasn't alot but it affected me as little as it was back then.

The second time was my own mistake, again I download a fake Bitcoin wallet on app store and weeks later someone moved my Btc to an exchange account and sold it.

That was when I lost it, until I did some research and learnt about Trezor hardware wallet, since that time I don't get hacked or lost my Bitcoin ever again.

Most security breaches happened from the side of the holders, not the other way around.

I first learn about how to protect my coins before buying bitcoin or other coins. I have not been hacked before.

My coins are on noncustodial wallets and I completely avoid exchanges for coin holding. I only trade and convert on exchanges but after that, I send my coins to noncustodial wallet.

The safest wallet are cold wallets. If you have high amount of money, make use of a cold wallet.

No, I've never experienced anything like that. My wallets have never been compromised, nor have my centralized platform accounts ever had such issues, and I have also never been a victim of exchanges getting hacked, because the exchanges that I've always used never got hacked or anything happened to them, fortunately.

I think your behaviour when it comes to the security of your funds will always make a difference, because if you are not very careful, you think that nothing is going to happen, so you are always reckless, doing all sorts of things without thinking, connecting your web3 wallets with different websites without even knowing if they are trustworthy or not, revealing your wallets holding cryptocurrencies to the public only to show off or whatever, these are all unnecessary and very reckless things to be done, and I've never done any of that.

If you don't want to face security issues with your cryptocurrencies, be serious in managing them. Smiley

I think it's easy to keep your funds secure but also easy to get them hacked out of your wallet. I've heard of a lot of hacks that have occurred like malicious extensions that can harvest data from web wallets to the backdoor electrun used to have and then the phishing attack it had.

If you're concerned about getting hacked and are storing enough crypto, it's worth considering a hardware wallet or an airgapped setup if you've got a spare machine. Desktop wallets are relatively safe though (especially if you keep wallet files encrypted).

When I was new I experience this and it happens when I download something random online.

After experiencing some unfortunate situation I make sure to do proper checking and just forget about downloading anything came from unknown or random people online.

Key lesson is never trust anyone online and  we always prioritize our safety and don't get tired verifying each information show or sent to us especially on email since this is when the issue starts and hacking will happen especially if people will play lame then don't pay much attention on their funds security.

Not really, I have never experienced something like that with my Bitcoin wallet, which makes me believe that Bitcoin wallet are better than altcoin wallet, the last time I lost money was from multicoin wallet called Trust wallet, and the culprit was me myself, I let the scammers get the best of me, I never knew there was something called clipboard malware, I got it on my PC not knowing and when I tried to move the coins to an exchange it never get to the destination.

After many questions been asked as to why I never got the coins I wrote a message to the exchange, dragged the matter with them and after I got calmed I started checking things over by myself, then I noticed that what I copy pasted wasn't what got copy pasted, was my mouse faulty I asked myself, then I do some research online then I got the answer.

I got mad again, messaged the exchange and explained what happened and I apologised, this was the only time I witnessed something like that, silly things like this happens with alternative coins more than Bitcoin.

People maybe don't know their accounts, emails have issues before they lose money. I would like to introduce a website for checking data breach with your email address. If you check your email address on the website and result is "You have been pwned", you must take action quickly with your email before it's too late.

https://haveibeenpwned.com/
Quote
Oh no — pwned! This email address has been found in multiple data breaches. Review the details below to see where your data was exposed.

Use strong passwords for your accounts, emails, wallet files.
[Guide] How to create a strong and secure password?
Are your password in the green? If your password is not in the green, means it's weak, you must change it to a new stronger password.

Thank God, I haven't experienced this myself. But I want to share my friend's experience. He wasn't hacked, but he lost his assets on an exchange. Remember the FTX exchange? Well, my friend experienced losses there. He didn't have many assets on the exchange, but he held Bitcoin and several altcoins on the exchange. But who would have thought that the exchange would eventually be suspended and closed. All his assets on the exchange were lost because they couldn't be retrieved.

From my friend's experience, I began to realize that storing assets on an exchange also carries risks no less frightening than hacking due to storing your wallet online or losing your seed phase. Therefore, the security of your assets is crucial, especially if you're storing them long-term. Don't store your assets on an exchange or in an online wallet store them in a wallet you control yourself.

I have never experienced any of those. But during my early days in this forum, I got lots of unsolicited messages via pm and telegram as well. I remember once when I made a post about using bitcoin the decentralized way. I got a PM from an unknown person who reached out to me telling me there are other likeminds like me called "the bitcoin maximalist" and will help me if I want to transfer all my savings to bitcoin.

Now, that was a huge red flag. Maybe my wallet details might be requested for or I might be prompted to give out sensitive information. Anything could have happened but all I know is that i dodged a bullet when I ignored that user completely. Most hacks and security breaches often that this way.

Scammers in the forum are usually newbie accounts and they tend to send scam PMs to forum members at high ranks but less likely send DMs to other newbie accounts.

You have more chances of receiving DMs from scammers in messenger applications like Telegram and scammers there often focus on new members of Telegram groups.

It is basic advice to see high risk of DMs from strangers, especially it relates to money, ask you private key, wallet seed and direct you to any website. Administrators, moderators never send DMs to users first, remember this.

Have you ever experienced a Bitcoin hack or security breach involving your cryptocurrency holdings? If so, how did it happen, and what steps have you taken since then to protect yourself from similar incidents in the future? What were the key lessons you learned from that experience?

Number of times that I have used software wallet on my laptop, my other cryptocurrency multi wallet has been compromised, lost ethereum on the two breach but I have never experienced any loss from my Bitcoin wallet, maybe it's because I don't connect my wallet or approved transaction with my Bitcoin wallet. This has made me.l believe that even an online wallet can be safe for your Bitcoin but you must not use it online like connect to web and don't download things you don't know.

Most of the times that I have seen exchanges wallets get hack, it's as a result of their negligence and how experienced the are with what they are doing. I remembered some months ago when Bybit loss some Bitcoin worth a billion dollars, after internal research was done it was gathered that the team actually allowed their wallet to be exploited despite been a multi signature wallet, the lesson I learnt from there is don't use what you don't understand.

Scammers in the forum are usually newbie accounts and they tend to send scam PMs to forum members at high ranks but less likely send DMs to other newbie accounts.
Scammers in the forum are usually newbie accounts, but most of them have started upgrading and going for hacked/sold accounts to make their scamming attempts more believable than they used to be.

And among all the social media we have, we have X, which is formerly known as Twitter, and Telegram, which is the paradise for these scammers. You should always expect unsolicited PMs from that place unless you set your profile to be private.

Yeah long story short, I'm applying for a job, they contacted me and it was all kinda legit in all and we even have a courtesy call. First, they let me download what they called an app for their website and that's what they'll let me handle if ai were to be accepted not knowing that was the malicious file.

It could have been worse if I've been wiped out but luckily not and I can work for that loss. Well, from here on out I'm sticking to hardware wallets, no other thing as secure as this in crypto afaik. Lesson learn: don't put those coins on your working gadgets, put it somewhere safe like HW.

Well I'm surprised if this kind of thing is real to happen because in my experience I have never gotten any unsolicited messages about scamming, few of them are only about asking for help, discuss about personal matter etc. In my early days, no one ever PM me lol.

Probably scam rise high after people know they can make money in this forum including the illegal ones.

Am yet to have an experience and never prayed to have any now or later in the future, because I know its a costly one which I can't afford to let some hoodlums take over what have toiled for over time, the best to do as for now is in ensuring for prevention which is better than cure, we must not learn the hard way before knowing what it takes to maintain high security level for our bitcoin asset, the Mt Gox victims and other related hacks could tell more about their experience losing all they have.

For those who have never experienced hacking or security problems, because they know the practices properly and correctly from the installation process to how to secure the seed phrase or private key.
If the hacking action cannot be done by evil hands, but those who never experience it and hopefully remain safe the assets realize that preventing is better than cure.

I never did and hope to never be in such a situation.

The best course of action is to not fall for some attempts on social engineering, and to keep what's needed not on the Net: and you are good to go Wink
