I don't think that the money spent on gambling is what should be use to judge if someone is an addict or not. I be a person should be considered an addict when it is obvious that the person can't go a day or two without gambling. A gambler can lose 100% of his salary in a day and wait another 30 days to be paid before he can gamble. Such gambler have self control because unless his salary comes he won't gamble. But someone who's addicted will look for any means possible to raise money to gamble.
It is true that those who spend their entire salary on gambling and even dare to take out loans just to keep gambling can be considered highly addicted gamblers. Sooner or later, gamblers like that will face ruin, they will only realize and regret their mistakes after losing everything. Meanwhile, the measure of whether someone is considered an addict actually depends greatly on their own personal limits, but in general, it is better to never spend more than 10% of your monthly income on gambling. Betting small amounts can reduce the risk of addiction, as it means you treat gambling merely as a form of entertainment.

A friend of mine was in an argument with me about when someone should consider himself as an addict, I said if anyone is losing 30 percent or more of his monthly income on gambling, that he is an addict but my friend said no.

He is not affected by gambling but I do not like the way he is losing money on gambling but he said he is not using more than 50% of his monthly salary to gamble and my mouth was wide opened when I heard it.
The calculations should not be based on the monthly salary. The ideal calculations should be done by total income less basic needs expenses.  The person's plans could also determine how much will be appropriate to spend. Some people live in free houses, depend on parents, or have other sources of income. Such people could spend even half of their monthly income on gambling. Some people don't care about savings or investments, so they can spend more.

Using myself as an example, I cannot use more than 5% of my monthly income for gambling. This is because exceeding that amount would affect my expenditure and savings. Gambling addiction occurs when you are gaming with amounts that will affect your budget negatively. When you gamble to the extent that you have to seek alternative sources of income to fund your budget, you might be close to addiction. There people who gamble that they have to take credits or loans ro survive, that's addiction.

In this case, I have to stand with your friend's opinion that losing 30% of the salary cant be considered as addicted because addiction is more than that (not limited to money only).
Just an example, someone gamble for the first time and losing his whole salary but he decided to stop forever, can we say that he is addicted? Of course not.
Addiction is when someone is no longer able to control themselves, spending more money and time while ignoring other important things in life at the same time.

You should consider yourself an addict, the moment you cannot do without gambling. If you haven't gamble in  the day you wouldn't be satisfied. However, if you start gambling for profit, you can also be considered an addict because it must lead to addiction since most of the addicted gamblers were playing for profit and continue to chase their losses.

When you start borrowing money to gamble, you are already addicted. Don't gamble when you don't have money and stop gambling after you have reached your limit. You are to only use your part of your discretionary money to gamble. Addicts don't accept that they're addicted. That's the trick.
I consider an addict to be someone who puts gambling first at any time he has money, there are those that whenever they have money the first thing that comes to their mind is gambling, at that point they don't realize that they have to eat, buy clothes or even take care of their health, they feel that they can get a life changing opportunity in gambling hence giving some much energy and resources in to gambling activitiesm every responsible gambler put their basic family needs first before gambling and anything out of this is purely addicting.

Personally, there is no specific amount that can determine if a person is addicted to gambling or not because money is subjective. Even if a person gambles 30% of their salary, he/she could still be considered as NOT an addict depending on the circumstances surrounding their situation.

Instead of relying on a specific amount to determine whether a person is an addict or not, the basis should be their personal lifestyle plus their habits that surround them. For example, if a person gambles away their salary to the extent that they do not pay their monthly obligations to their family or bills, then we may consider him as a gambler addict.

In conclusion and in short, we are talking here about the PRIORITIES of a person. If they put gambling on the top of the hierarchy of their needs and they disregard other essential things, then we can consider them as an addict.

When anyone is staking about half of their wages on gambling,  then that is a very serious warning sign. One is not expected to hit a particular percentage before he can be considered an addict. The moment gambling begins to affect stability, decision making, or even the ability to quit, then it is already an issue. So your concern is a valid one.

I don't think the percentage of his income actually determines if he's an actual addict, though we always advice that gamblers should gamble with what they can afford to lose. I don't know how massive or small his income is, but I would prefer to consider an addict as someone who continues to see the need to keep gambling no matter how much they've spent and how many times they've done it. Anyone can stake 30% or more, of their salary in one sitting. That doesn't makes them an addict, they just fail to adhere to the number one basic and general rule that concerns gambling, which is risking what you can afford to lose.

The moment anyone keeps having the urge to gamble even after doing it over and over again, then it has become a case of addiction. Just imagine someone gambling 8-12hrs in a day. That's already a case of addiction if you ask me. So, like I said, the moment you need to start considering yourself as an addict is when you keep having the urge to do it over and over again without control.

You are considered an addict when you keep doing foolish things that continuously cause harm. We even feel that something strange keeps pushing you to engage in harmful activities, such as gambling. There will be urges that we cannot control. It will keep poisoning the conscious mind, and a person whose desires are not fulfilled will do everything possible to achieve them. There are no limits to the losses for an addict; it only depends on the strength of their willpower.

If we look at the definition of a gambling addict, it is something to do with the control, if the gambler is unable to control the urge to gamble, then he can definitely be a gambling addict, but if a person simply loses 30% of his income in a regular basis, this person has control over his gambling activities.  We can say that he is reckless or an overspender, but the fact that the losses are maintained at 30% of his income, it is far from being a gambling addict.

If you spend more than 30 percent of what you earn then you are definitely dealing with gambling addiction, a lot of people don't really see how much of a big deal it is to gamble with more than 30 percent of what you earn especially if you fall under the category of people that don't really earn much in a month, as a gambler it is always important for you to have limits, without this you might be addicted

There is nothing we may do about this case because some people just wanna make money and forget about their immidiate problem. If gambling becomes to too hard to make money, the best thing to do is to forget about it and focus on how to be a better person. There are people that will not want to give up when they are gambling and in this case, that kind of person will need serious advise that will help them to forget about gambling or better gamble less until when they can stand alone and choose when to gamble and when to leave and relax without looking for a way to make money quickly.

When we talk about addiction, it is when someone's way of life or habit is beyond his or her control, no matter how hard they try to stop it.

When it comes to gambling, it is when an individual cannot control his or her emotions towards gambling, you don't have control over your gambling life style and cannot stop even when  you are incuring big losses.

The other way of avoiding a harsh truth about life can be the habit of gambling again and again. We should pay more attention to the way in which we should approach financial issues in a more rational and real way. Once gambling starts to affect our well-being then we have to address ourselves on what values and goals in life are more great than the Quick Fixed earnings. Our change of this mentality will lead to us taking the charge of our lives back, dropping any unwarranted burdens and enhance our general living standards.

The simple truth is that just continue to gamble responsibly because there's no how you can tell an addition gambler that he would listen to you, rather, it will continue to argue with you so that's why you don't need to worry yourself too much. Honestly, I don't have time for any argument at all because I know what addiction is all about, and I know when I'm going above my limit and which is the most important thing in gambling because that's the easiest way to gamble responsibly without getting addicted to gambling.

Let's say your friend earns a monthly salary of $4000 and spends 50% of it on gambling($2000). He will be left with just $2000 for groceries, utility bill and any other responsibility and you can imagine if he also has a family to support, that will even make it abvious that what is left out of his salary cannot sustain him that month. I think in such a condition it is difficult to say he is not battling with gambling addiction.

I will give you three characteristics of an addict for free:
1. He/she cannot be trusted with money
2. He/she will never admit they are addict
3. They spend majority of their time gambling

Additionally, they can steal or borrow just to gamble. IMO, if you can spend more than 10% of your earnings in gambling you are no longer staking for fun and that's the root of addiction.

Gambling addiction is a severe issue, which is not an easy task to get rid of without the corresponding assistance. When a person is caught up in this habit we cannot just hope that he or she will change according to our views. In some cases, they must undergo a turning point in their lives and realise the value of self control. In this regard, we should take the case at hand with patience, and at the same time remain distant so as not to be sucked into futile debates. The antecedent to the end of this cycle is self acceptance.

Well, you can yourself an addict when you have made gambling a source of income or suvival means for yourself. I have familiar feeling your friend is not telling you the whole truth, he made even be in debts and trying to recover, if your are using 50% of your monthly income to bet, how then can you take care of other responsibilities. This is why i believe he is not saying the whole truth but nevertheless you being worried and concerned for your friend just tells me he is struggling and its visible, so he should take a break or quit till he has everthing under control.

An addict will usually find or make time for their addiction every single day if it's bad, prioritizing it above other things often to their detriment. They cannot help themselves, or at least that is the mindset that they talk themselves into when they could actually walk away from it at any time. The hardest thing that gamblers really have a problem is with letting go of all of the money that they've poured into casinos or bookmakers in the past, but it's the first step on a path back to self control. Once you admit you wasted it all and will never earn it back the same way, you get a bit of freedom back in your mind and it's at that point you have to start rebuilding with whatever you've got left.

Gambling addiction usually spends any money including the monthly money earned is spent on gambling, but using more than half of the salary is excessive, you can say you are addicted.
I don't want to be considered a gambling addict because it can damage mentally, at least what is at stake in gambling with a small amount, it can be said that I can control myself, finally not considered an addict.

30% of your monthly salary is so high. Anyone gambling with more than 10% or 20% is doing the wrong thing.

I do 10% of my discretionary income. Meaning I don't even gamble with more than 10% of my monthly income. I make sure to settle every possible expense, including my investment and savings, before thinking of gambling.
