USDT is far greater and bigger, and can be considered as more legal than USDC in many cases, which is why it is preferred a lot more. It is not about what we prefer here, it's about what the market prefers and the market prefers USDT, because it's in more places than USDC and that is good enough all by itself.

Tether don't want to comply with MiCA for some reason and prefer to step out. Being available in more place doesn't necessarily equal to being considered as more legal. USDT has also recently getting restricted in EU because of that.

I don't see much of a difference between USDT and USDC, and any issuer can lock your coins. USDT can be exchanged for USDC and back on UniSwap with a minimal fee, so use whatever is most convenient for you. However, for storage, I'll only choose DAI on the Ethereum network; locking DAI is possible with L2 solutions.

Meanwhile, USDT has been criticized many time for its lack of transparency and still does not fully meet the standard set by stablecoin regulations in the US and EU.

However, USDT has a much larger market outside the US and EU. It is very popular in Asia, Latin America, and countries with high inflation. Thats why USDT has a larger market capitalization and is more widely used.

Well, Tether is not far from being behind Circle. It recently entered the US market, by launching a regulatory-compliant stablecoin called "USAT". It adheres to strict US regulations. Built specifically to operate under the newly-enacted GENIUS act. Since it's issued directly by Anchorage (a federally chartered crypto bank), stablecoin reserves are under direct US banking supervision.

I think USAT is Tether's last chance to become as trustworthy as Circle's USDC. Now, it needs mass adoption from institutions. The question is: Will it achieve it? For now, ordinary people will stick with USDC. If it "ain't broke, don't fix it".

I'm guessing that within 3-4 years if USDT don't get itself compliant, it will get overtaken by USDC easily. For USDC to surpass USDT market cap, it needs more funding from external investment and honestly that's an easy thing to do for Circle considering how profitable and how good their revenue and growth has been.

To be fair, the gap is still very large. USDT has a market capitalization of $190b and continues to dominate USDC, which stands at $79b.
However, USDC is showing stronger growth than USDT. More notably, USDC recorded a trading volume of $2.55 trillion, while USDT only reached $1.49 trillion in the first few month of 2026.

If USDC can maintain this growth momentum, it has the potential to surpass USDT and become the largest stablecoin on the market.

You shouldnt use either USDC or USDT, because centralized stablecoins can always be frozen.  

If you are aware of that risk and still want to use them, then the better choice depends largely on whether you plan to use them mainly within the EU or internationally.

For the EU, USDC is clearly the better option due to MiCA compliance and the ongoing USDT delistings on some euro-exchanges. It also offers a very high level of transparency through regular reserve attestations and reports.

USDT still remains the most widely used stablecoin internationally and is available on more ore less every (nonKYC) major exchange, giving it much better global liquidity.

If this happens it is indeed very scary where we can lose our assets from our ignorance of activities on the blockchain so that they freeze the funds we have, regardless of all that as a conservative measure we should have more stablecoins for temporary storage so that the risk is divided, if we put our money in the same basket if it is frozen for any reason some of our money is still safe, I year most of us who are during the bearish keep money in stable coins while waiting for the decline to end, so this solution can be utilized.
