Saw this on Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/25/us-internet-gambling-idUSTRE7BO0HA20111225

I remember awhile back people mentioned that part of the reason BTC took off was due to Poker sites being shut down.  I wonder how this will affect BTC if it goes through.  Does poker contribute significantly to BTC economy?

No way to really know the answer to that question, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

I am pretty sure with the amount of poker related sites, even with alt coins getting gambling as part of their first services usually, it seems to be a pretty solid business so far.  No matter if the legit markets support Bitcoin or not, the people who will truly make use of it seem to find it.

There is more to Bitcoin than bitcoins.

Bitcoin is something new and hard to define in conventional terms, and as such will have a hard time fitting into any kind of conventional regulation. If states legalize online gambling, they will also regulate it, including the flow of fiat currency. Bitcoin will not be welcome, as legalization of online gambling by the states is really only an introduction of the stupidity tax to help deal with budget cuts. It's unrealistic to expect that they would accommodate an alternative to Fed-controlled fiat, even if they could find a way to tax it.

Yeah, I agree, it probably doesn't hurt to have poker as another source that uses BTC.  I guess we will find out what the effects are if legalized internet poker comes back.  I doubt the mainstream poker sites would consider using BTC.  They will stick with fiat is my guess.  For BTC, I would much rather they tax it than to make it illegal.

Bitcoin will be a competitive advantage that the little guys can use - offering faster/cheaper deposit/withdrawal alternatives for their clients. At some point the big boys will seek to quash such competition and purchase protection from their governments.

I think it would be a bit short sighted. Gambling creates more problems than it solves.

Perhaps if gambing sites had to advertise using and use in there terminology only spending terms to sugest you were spending you'r money there as opposed to focusing on the possibility of winning.

I agree that "Gambling creates more problems than it solves."  But legislating morality creates more problems than it solves.  Besides, there are more important things for the government to focus on.

What other poker sites besides betco take BTC? As far as I know, only a trivial amount of BTC has been used for poker sites, so that was not a noteworthy early driver of bitcoin's popularity.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system to credibly offer perfect information to all economic participants.

bitcoin is by far the most attractive micro payment method on the market and if setup correctly at least for gambling sites it can be instant both ways deposits and withdrawals no other payment method on the market can top this at current transfer costs.
