Betting on yourself - an extra motivator or mental burden?

I've never had the experience of betting on myself in sports betting, but it's a very interesting topic to discuss. And I think it can only motivate those sportsmans who lack self-control and can't convince themselves that they really need to play their hardest. After all, if an sportsman is very good, they'll easily always play to their full potential, not just when they've actually bet a certain amount of money on themselves.
But if an sportman is bad and has bet money on themselves, they'll be highly motivated and will try to win, but I think if they lose, they'll start to freak out, which will irritate those around them.

Of course it motivates you to complete and win back your money and even get more, but this is initially and as long as you're winning. If the tables turns around and it's going as though you'll loose your stake, the reverse is the case and the pressure build around you as you increasingly see the possibility of losing your stake.

The two are applicable in the same scenario, but the pressure is reduced by great margin if the amount staked is very minimal and you don't mind losing it, then you can remain motivated throughout the session.

I used to do that when I was actively participating in a chess tournament. I bet that, depending on who my opponent is, chess players can scout their opponents' strengths and weaknesses. If I believe I can beat him, I bet on myself to win.

But if it's an even-strength match or he is better than me, I never bet. I don't want to pressure myself to win, because in chess there is such a thing as a draw, and opponents with equal strength usually agree to one when they have exhausted all available options to win.

In most cases, those bets would add fuel to an athlete to sharpen the focus, motivation, and the will to win, and sometimes may be an extra motivator to go over the limits (depending on the amount of the bet and how important it is for you).

I am good with running, and then I used to bet on myself to win whenever we had a little contest, between I and a friend or even friends. The reason I used to bet on myself then was because I trusted my abilities and was more interested in the amount of money I could win. It was more motivating for me then because I had no doubts on my abilities to win. It would have become a mental burden to me if I had some form of doubt on my abilities to win.
Some athletes in sports today bet on themselves to loose, and that is concerning if they are a part of a team because since they have made a bet for their team to loose, they may not put in their best, and their individual poor performance may cost the entire team.

All I can say is that it’s illegal. A lot of players have already been banned for betting on themselves, that’s a fact. Sure, it might be possible to do it if you’re trying to hide it, but for me, betting on yourself is never right.

It takes away the real entertainment that fans are supposed to experience.

I think betting on yourself often creates a sense of responsibility towards yourself. When you know that if you play badly today not only your reputation but also your pocket will be damaged, many people become more disciplined without even realizing it. However the problem starts when the bet gets out of control, then instead of being a player, the person becomes a gambler. Unless this is done for fun and nothing serious, I don't see any point in doing this because you may not really bet big money in this type of bets. Secondly, there is no way to hit a jackpot through this type of bets so you can only bet small amount which make it uninteresting to me and the reason I don't like this type of bets. Betting on oneself could be a form of motivation to do better but could also be dangerous when it becomes obsession and it takes over your focus. At this point, you're more focused on the bet than the game itself and you would do anything possible to get that win even if it means going against the rules of the game.

There's nothing wrong with the two options as long as you perform at your optimum. I don't think I can bet on myself during the match; there is pressure to win, and that pressure might impact my game, so I prefer the second option of not adding it, as it may cause unnecessary burden.

As long as you don't bet against you and lose on purpose, I don't think there's anything ethically wrong with that. If we talk about pressure, in occasions athletes must undergo a lot of anxiety and stress even without betting, so I don't think it would be a great problem.

In my case, I have never made a bet on myself, but I remember that I (only) once encouraged a few friends to bet on me and they didn't follow my advice, and when I won they told me: -Why didn't you tell us you were going to win? -I did... -But you didn't insist! (the same happened some years ago when I talked to a few friends about the potential of Bitcoin).

The thing is that betting is betting, you can never be 100% sure of the results, even if they depend on you to a great extent.

During my high school days, I have engaged actively in different sports which include soccer and relay race. I have bragged so much about my skills and team, but have never placed bets on myself. I have never thought about betting on myself. I feel that, involving money in the game I am supposed to have passion for influences my mindset and puts some extra stress on me. It will create pressure for sure because you have to win that match and so that you win your bet for yourself.

But this is where it's being taken advantage and why selling of games are happening. When athletes are betting against themselves, they think that it's easy money.

And so ethics is gone when money is involved and that's why as much as the athletes from this era, they should avoid betting on themselves and their games.
