The Nigerian senates officially signed tax refund bills into law to take effect from today being 1st January 2026. This is indeed a very sad one because at the end of the day the  poor citizens that has laboured so hard to earn their means of survival will be the one to suffer for it,  however, over the years Nigerian has been known to be the giant of Africa due to our surplus natural resources that we have got but regardless everything we have we are still backward in every aspect, imagine a country loaded with minerals and natural resources we are still exporting Minor things that we literally would have produced our self, like fuel etc.

Recently our president ensure that our local bonkary (local refinery) was stoped and till date you rarely see all this locally made Diesel or fuel anymore due to their effectiveness on that area, they have put down every measures to ensure it is completely stopped. That apart, now my points is that regardless all our wealth as a nation, we have everything that even world powers are even admiring and that's true.

Then why is our president still insisting on taxing us the poor citizens instead of using from our natural resources which they have already been embezzling over the years. The Last time I checked it has been a very long time I heard anything about federal or state employment from our leaders  then if so where do they expect the unemployed youth they have abandon to get the money for them start stealing in masquerading as tax, or are we going to just fold our hands and allow this heartless leaders eat from were they didn't sow ?

Honestly e dey annoying dat tinubu wey many Nigerians put all dere hopes on,  na em be di same persin wey wan crashdown small scale business owners dis days with too much tax everywhere. People campaigned and vote for tinubu becos how he transform his own state di time wey e dey do governor thinking he go do much better to make Nigeria as a country work again but unfortunately reverse is the case.

Tinubu don betray di trust wey masses get for am, nothing dey work again rather e dey get worse. Imagine what he claimed to fight before when he introduced subsidy that it's only one person that is enjoying it during the previous administration, but we see no changes rather spending it on governor's, senators and his biological son to go round the country campaigning for the next coming election, instead of using the money to invest on something better and he's still coming with taxes reform for poor masses not to grow rather for them to remain like slaves in their own country again where are we helding to for cry out loud.

We will just have to accept it like that, because there's is nothing we can do about it. What will just annoy me in this tax thing is that  the money we are paying is not put into a good use for the development of the country. na there Wahala go start. If those politicians want to start looting our tax money into their account, na Ogun go judge dem oo. After all my sweat to make money and pay my tax somebody will now use to buy properties, sponsor their kids to an expensive private university outside the country, instead of them to use the tax money to focus on health sector, Education, Agriculture, infrastructures and increase of job employment. At least taxpayers supposed to have a benefit in it like free health care, education etc. if the government can do these with our tax money people won't have problem in paying their taxes..

How do we get here?,  if 2025 without tax was so difficult for Nigerians to survive how much more when this tax will be effective this year January, I feel sorry for  the poor masses that can't even afford 3 square meals for their families and now they will be paying tax to a government that has not done anything for the citizens to survive, instead they make things hard for us. The government should diversify the economy if they want to lessen the hardship on poor Nigerians.

Tinubu is the candidate that came out and the people thought he will revive the country's economy because people believed he made Lagos State what it is today but when he came in as the president he has made Nigerians suffer the more, we are highly disappointed in his leadership structure, I believe this tax is for a purpose and it will be for his upcoming election in 2027, so he is trying to gather money for re-election that's why he is stressing Nigerians, it's not as if the tax money will be used for any tangible purpose for the citizens.

That can only work if the president in question has human sympathy, the way leadership is done in Nigeria is far much different from that of other countries especially the western world that values citizens and not only interested in there self wealth. Over 60 percent of Nigerians are living from hand to mouth which clearly means there is hunger in the country but our leaders never have the thought of the citizens that are suffering in mind that is why they make laws that will increase the hardship level of the poor. If things where to be done the way it is supposed to be the new tax payment policy wont have been implemented because of its disadvantages to the poor masses.

You are going too far, visit morocco, benin Republic,South Africa and Burkina faso. These countries I have mentioned enjoy uninterrupted power supply, good roads and cost of living is affordable. You no what, Nigeria is ten times richer than those countries yet we can't even boost of a single thing as a nation.  The government cannot provide us with infrastructure, amenities, jobs and security yet we still have to pay taxes annually.  it  has become a norm for government to embezzled public funds vacate office after four years without being held accountable for misappropriation of public funds. In a fair system, any Government officials caught embezzled public money after four years in office should be jail yet we don't have such a system in Nigeria. If we have a system that works, government officials should be afraid of stealing public funds because they will be sent to jail.

The most unfortunate thing I've heard them say about this taxation of a thing is that it's actually targeted at the rich since in the first place, the average Nigerian don't earn as much as 800k a year? Can you even sit back to imagine that?

If at all with the way our currency doesn't have value at all we can't boost of at most 800k, what are we actually doing with our lives? It's just too unfortunate. Create job, they say NO. Create system that can lead to employment of youths you're not interested in it and yet you're interested in collecting from the people you're not even contributing for Thier survival. Even when they are taking about an average content creator earning a certain amount a month, should that be their concern? You want to tax someone you're not helping just because he's a Nigerian? So we should only be loosing by being a Nigerian and never gaining?

This tax reform is not status based so it will definitely affect everyone rich or poor but the poor masses will be the one mostly to be affected by the tax reform, this are people that is still finding it difficult to feed their families and survive the hardship and the government has implemented tax reform on every individual, it's totally worrisome and I wonder how we're going to survive this as it has come to stay. Tinubu don't have human sympathy and conscience for us.

Uptill this moment I don't know what the government stands to gain from this tax reform that they want to impose on us, all I see is indirect exploitation of money from the citizens, they just want to take the little the poor has to furnish their extravagant lifestyle nothing more because this people don't have any goodwill for citizens . On this Note I believe the poor will suffer it the more as they little or no source of income and the little they have will be deducted from them.

My guy the tax matter dey give me so much concerned because this na country way people dey suffer every day, people that are finding it very difficult to feed and you as a president that has it all is still asking this poor and hopeless citizens to pay you tax, for what? were do you expect them to pay you the tax from? Is it from the job you gave to them or from the Minor hustling they are hustling every day just to survive? men this our leaders are very wicked and heartless and God will judge them.

I just hope Nigerians are not going to keep quiet and let this whole tax stuff to stand in this 2026 , perhaps we definitely have to do something about it because this one is not going to work, i think is right time the youths stop their silence and do the needful otherwise this old people will just wake up One day and start demanding we start paying for the air we are breathing.

President Tinubu personally told us that we didn't vote for him doing the last election and I believe that those are some of the  reasons is doing all that his doing today because he so much believes he owe Nigerians nothing. He told us this year that we will start paying tax regardless and here we come I doubt if any one have the capability of oppossing him because I believe the senate are very much in this with him.

Nigeria has always been known for our curruption all-over the world and I don't think we are stopping anything soon and to make it worse we went ahead to elect a drug Barron and and  a criminal of a person into power what else were we expecting? For me I just wish I could do without a bank because I definitely can not start feeding those old fools.

I think we are getting this whole tax initiative wrong, if you tell me that the money generated won’t be used judiciously to better the lives of the citizens i can accept because this trait is peculiar with our government but if you tell me that it’s not good to tax citizens because they are poor i won’t accept it, everybody both rich and poor are supposed to pay tax, the only difference is that the tax collected will be at different rate depending on the the financial strength of each individual, i think we need more enlightenment about the whole tax reform.

Nigerians has always been paying tax one way or the other both skilled workers, traders etc the only difference is that the taxing system used in the past lacked proper dating and follow up, we still had few Nigerians that weren’t paying due to poor data management systems in Nigeria of which this new tax reform in partnership with France is trying to fix the lacuna by using our NIN as our tax ID in that way it will be easy to follow up the account statements of every Nigerian and then tax them accordingly, depending on their income rate.

There is no developed country our developing country in the world that doesn’t pay tax, so i don’t see why we should worry ourselves so much about the whole tax issue, instead i feel we should be more concerned in influencing the government to use the money generated from the tax properly for the betterment of the people. Let’s not raise our BP so much because it’s something that has always existed right from time and they don’t just tax the way we feel, there are certain key considerations they follow, they must check your income rate and other parameters so let’s not overwork ourselves on this subject.

I am happy you admitted that the tax yet to be realized from the poor masses wouldn't be used for the betterment or the development of the people so why collecting it at the first place? nobody will start making drama out from it if truly we are ensure of them doing the right thing but this people's involved are very currupt and heartedness, they don't mind sharing the realized tax funds among their self in case you don't know.

Am still in doubt if Nigerian is truly developed because if we truly do things wouldn't be the way it is now. Every developed country is never scared of paying tax because the leaders are very much accountable for every Kobo been collected and they are always transparent in everything they do unlike Nigeria .

Why must we have to influence them before they can do the right thing? Am pretty aware that they weren't influenced by anybody before coming up with the idea of taxing the citizens and even went further in partnership with France just to get this done. So i really don't see any reason telling them what to do because they aren't kids, if they know they are incapable they should step down for a more serious person to do the job.

Money generated from tax can be used to develop a place or even a country. In some of these developed countries like England, France etc, where their tax rate is very high, they use this tax to ensure every citizen does not suffer hardship including the poor citizens. In the developed countries, the rich people pay more tax, they pay tax according to their wealth and the money they generate either weekly or monthly, and does not place the burden on the poor masses.

If only Nigeria government will be sincerely with their tax policy, I think the poor masses have nothing to fear, because the rich and the politicians will always pay more and the burden will always be on the politicians who amass which wealth for themselves and their family.

Regarding this tax policy, am afraid because Nigeria government will hardly make any policy that will benefit the masses, they will do it in a way that it will profit the politicians while the masses will suffer the burden.

Me I don’t have problem with the government deciding to tax its citizens who are in pole position to pay the required tax levied on them, afterwards even in the most developed countries for example in the Uk, they pay some certain tax. But my only problem with the Nigerian government is that despite collecting taxes from it’s citizens you will still be wondering what they are usually doing with this money because if you look at these other countries where they pay lots of taxes the government is really working to also try to make the lives of the citizens more better, but here in Nigeria the case is different. If only the government will be able to make good use of this money and taxes being paid by its citizens to further improve their economy and the country then no one will complain of paying taxes. The government really need to put in more effort towards improving the economy for the betterment of it’s citizens so that no one will complain of paying taxes.

From what I've studied in school, payment of tax is one of the civic obligations of the citizens of a country be it poor or rich.
So it's never a wrong thing for citizens to pay their tax. In short, the payment of tax did not start from today ; it has been on for years now . The key difference between the past and present taxing strategy is in the present mode of collection.  The government are now being  too overly serious and cohesive with it.

One thing i find akward about this whole tax thing is that the tax rate is just too high for the average Nigerian . I  think currently now the new tax reform is set at 20%. Imagine struggling to  earn N5,000 from hawking purewater under the sun. And 20%(N2000) is deducted from it. Or probably you ought to receive N15,000 as your monthly and 20% is deducted from it. It's a huge deficit to all your budget already.

But in all of these there is still hope for us all. There's a way out of this mess. I will share with us one sharp update I got few days back. It's actually a way to avoid unnecessary tax deduction.
I believe with this update we can avoid avoid as many unnecessary tax deductions as we can.

I wont say that i know so much about the tax reform that is already in place, but from my little understanding of what it mean, there is a certain amount of income you should have been earning before you can be taxed, and it may mostly affect registered businesses with large capital generated revenue of up to 800k and above inorder for such tax reform act to be exercised.
So no fear ogam, poor man no go fit pay the tax and them no go bother am, but if rich man wey dey earn block fail to pay tax, them go suffer fines and penalties.

Mr. president who calls himself Tinubu came to power with different plans. After putting himself as the president of grate Nation decided to change the plans and the hope of people. Already he told us his plans. Instead of him letting the people enjoying his government, people are crying. Rather making plans on how to slaves the citizens in there own country. Now is taxed reform matter for poor masses till when Huh No jobs and the cost of things in the country are high. After now campaig will start for 2027. My people are we still going to vote for him again after spending the nations money and borrowing, He still talks about taxed reform. The message is getting worse. Just Imagine after winning again what happened, we will start paying tilte to government and Tinubu.

We have been paying taxes for long even paid Value Added Tax (VAT) on consumer goods, it was that bad but we still didn't complain. All the taxes that has been paid over the years where exactly has the money gone to if not to done personal pockets of some few individuals in the country. These countries that pays high taxes, the government has already provided an enabling environment for all of its citizens to strive upon, quality social amenities even jobs on arrival after schooling for those who are in school and jobs also for those still schooling. Foos Security, life and property security and the list goes on. So when the citizens of these countries pays tax, they already know where and what the money is ment for, but we cannot relate to this in our own country. We are complaining because, they government are hiding the real reason for this new tax system, they didn't create jobs but wants to still get money from citizens, how na? If say we know where the money dy enter, we for no dy complain. Nigerian are very compliant people.
