Before investing in bitcoin, probably long-term investment,  one should try to acquire the necessary knowledge about what he or she going into, because everything about investing in bitcoin plays or test your emotions. Having a good knowledge about bitcoin and how it works helps you to be committed to your long-term goals rather than making emotional decisions.

This has been said number of times in the forum that as a beginner you don't necessarily need to get all the necessary information before getting started, according to what JJG said in his previous comment that what you  need to get started with your bitcoin investment is your discretionary funds, where you are going to buy from and if you have the ability make reasonable choices for yourself.

Reference:

Do they have discretionary funds?

Do they know from where they are going to buy?

Do they have an ability to make reasonable choices for themselves?  or you want to treat them like a 12 year old merely because they are new to bitcoin?  Do you presume the bitcoin newbie to be 12 years old?

From this reference I gave you can clearly see that you don't need to get all the necessary informations about bitcoin before getting started, this few things that is listed above are the things you need to get started then during the process of your accumulation you will get to know all the things that you need to know.

Common sense will tell you that bitcoin investment is a long term investment so short term changes in price shouldn't bother you, people keep overestimating what basic knowledge is, all you really need to start investing is your discretionary income and maybe to avoid getting scammed you also need to know the right place to buy from (not that there is really much here to know, the main reason why people get scammed trying to buy bitcoin is because the receive clearly shady offers but because these offers promise quick profit, something that isn't associated with bitcoin investment, they quickly accept it, they did get scammed because the didn't know where to buy bitcoin but because their own greed stopped them from buying from a legit source).
So instead of spending time trying to learn about bitcoin and losing valuable time in the process you should put that effort into figuring out how much of your income is discretionary and how much of that discretionary income you can use to buy bitcoin.

Why not explain it as a continuous process to make it sound balanced and easy for newbies to understand and follow. Figuring out discretionary income can put a person in a position to start accumulation journey right away, but the leaning phase shouldn't stop there

As they continue to buy over time, they naturally learn more about using reputable exchanges, securing their Bitcoin, avoiding common mistakes and improving their approach. They also gradually build the knowledge and habits needed to make better decisions over time. Both of them can grow together.

Doing this will eat up your time because that time you are using to acquire this knowledge is the time you should have use in stacking up bitcoin because there is no way you will want to learn and be satisfied you will want to be learning and later become a no coiner.

Common sense and discretionary income is actually what you needed to start buying BTC definitely as you are buying bitcoin you will be also learning through it and understand more on how you can hold your bitcoin for long.

Determining discretionary income is not the complete basic knowledge required before starting an investment, but rather a small part of it. Before starting an investment, it is necessary to have the ability to determine discretionary income, an idea about Bitcoin, an idea about investment, and purchasing power as basic knowledge. That is, it is wrong to assume that a person can become a qualified person to start investing only if they have the ability to determine discretionary income. If you do not have the purchasing power and do not have a general idea about Bitcoin, then you may encounter a big mistake at the beginning of the investment or put your own safety at risk. So do not rush to start investing, and you should not even delay it too much. Acquire the necessary knowledge and start investing as soon as possible.

Learning while buying is effective, but I don't think it should be learning instead of buying or buying instead of learning. The best approach is to do both simultaneously. You don't need to master every technical aspect of Bitcoin before you start buying. However, you should understand the Basics, why Bitcoin exists, its volatility, self-custody, and why you should only invest money you can afford to leave untouched for years. Starting with a small amount which is your discretionary income while continuing to learn helps you gain practical experience without delaying your investment indefinitely. Knowledge reduces emotional decisions, while owning Bitcoin gives you the motivation to keep learning. Those two should complement each other, not compete.

From my own point of view, life itself is a gamble. You wake up in the morning and you go out without even considering that you might not come back home safe. What do I mean by this, as humans it is very okay for us to take some risk in life, being it in Bitcoin or any other business, humans have become too scared to take risk these days. Your friend did the right thing. I won't blame him. I'm sure lot of us would have done the same thing. At the end of the day, a lesson was learnt, but we should stop relying on the things we learn on YouTube. We should always do a proper research, reach out to people for help. Self knowledge is not enough.

Like you said your friend made some money and he loses some too. I think it's a bit balanced, for everyone involved in Bitcoin would understand that sometimes market is bad. We shouldn't be emotional about everything, just learn the simple lesson and move on.
There are some risks in every job and every field in our life, but the risks of every job are not the same, some are less risky and some are much more risky. There are comparative risks in every field like doing business, being an entrepreneur, investing in Bitcoin, but we certainly do not make decisions based on luck in each of these fields because through planning, knowledge and proper management, we can reduce the risk and increase the chances of success. So, although gambling is completely based on luck, research and discipline in investment play an important role in success. However, making emotional decisions and entering into investments based on emotions can cause problems later and as a result, the investor may suffer. In this case, the right mindset is also necessary. Making decisions due to excessive greed or making decisions due to excessive frustration can both worsen the results. However, in the long run, the characteristics of a successful investor should be to learn from every experience and improve his decision-making ability.

That's why people should choose their risk wisely, if you ask between investment and trading, I'll ask people to embrace investment with reason that our economy is getting very bad as the year goes and holding Bitcoin might be risky but can serve as an inflation hedge likewise offering financial freedom on the long run.

Trading doesn't have such features, you lose and lose out then try again with another fund but history has thought us that money lost in investing through volatility is recovered with time and the more consistent and investor is the more the investor would be able to beat volatility as time passes, so it's a better risk than the other.

When you say holding bitcoin might be risky you’re indirectly advising people to sell off their bitcoin holdings quickly
if they notice a little downturn caused as a result of an economy getting bad which is actually a traders mindset who’s in for quick gains which is a step towards bitcoin gambling instead of investing. A long term investor should be focused more on consistently accumulating bitcoin and hold regardless of market volatility or when there’s a market downturn. The key is patience and consistency while accumulating bitcoin and not to panick  when you notice a downturn in price of bitcoin. Most panic sell is as a result of investing with a non discretionary funds, using money meant to be used for sorting basic needs to invest in bitcoin. The key is to invest with not more than one can afford To lose. Do DCA, buy the dip when you can and hold,  Investing with the DCA method helps to mitigate the impact of the risk associated with bitcoin investment.
Bitcoin is a strong asset in the long term, but the risks involved cannot be completely ruled out. So when we acknowledge the risks, it does not mean that we are leading someone to sell at a price drop. Rather, they will understand that the amount of investment should be determined in such a way that even if the dip comes later, they will not be forced to sell. Just because the price has recovered from every past drop, there is no guarantee that every future drop will recover within a certain period of time. Past results can be a reason for our confidence, but it does not guarantee the future. Bitcoin has risks and also has good long-term potential. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in the long term with money that we will not need in the near future. Accepting the risks means that you should invest from discretionary income in the long term and not pour everything into trying to get rich overnight. Confidence

~snip~
Trading, shitcoins are all gambling because you will run at loss in the long. No matter how many little profits you have made from trading, you will lose everything in just one trade. It's easy to say people are making money in trading but I haven't seen any. This isn't a trading trade but a bitcoin investment trade so don't hype trading here in order not to mislead newbies for them to think that trading is profitable because it's a waste of time, energy and resources.

Long term bitcoin investment is what everyone in the cryptospace should be into because that's the major reason the cryptospace exist since bitcoin has proven to be a long-term store of value overtime before these copy cat shitcoin devs contaminated the market with their endless shitcoins.

Don't get me wrong mate I didn't mention any inferior coin in my previous post.you think traders use those inferior coins while trading? Even though they are traders but they still have the ability to make the right choice while looking for coins they will use for Thier trading. Majority of the traders I have seen so far are all trading with bitcoin because it has a good quality, and from my experience it seems that it is much more better than every other coins out there even though surely bitcoin is not good in trading.

I'm not recommending anyone to go into trading it is due to what @The Founding Titan said in his previous comment that pushed me into making such emphasizes about trading, understand me. just like I said Bitcoin investment is much more better than trading but if guys insist that they want to give it a trial then I will advice they only map out a very little portion of Thier discretionary income even if it's 1% of Thier discretionary income they should trade with if possible because trading is not worth putting enough discretionary income due to the risk that is associated with trading.

Just because there is a level of risk involved in something doesn't mean it's the same as gambling, this kind of mindset is why a lot of people treat their bitcoin investment the same way they treat gambling and that's just wrong, if you are looking for something to compare to gambling then maybe try comparing trading to gamble instead.
It's good that people learn from their mistakes but if they were careful enough then they wouldn't have had to make that mistake in the first place, anyone who is investing in bitcoin should know that bitcoin investment is long term and that they shouldn't be considering taking short term profits from it.
Trading cannot be called gambling completely. Every investment has risks. We can never say that any investment is completely risk-free. However, if someone does not make decisions based on his plan and does not have any knowledge, then it can be like gambling. Gambling is based on luck, but investment requires evaluation, planning and management. There is high risk in short-term trading, so if an inexperienced and undisciplined person trades, it can turn into gambling-like behavior. Whereas a skilled trader makes decisions based on his risk management and probability. In this case we can say that unplanned trading is like gambling. It is necessary to have a long-term view in Bitcoin investment to reduce volatility. Expecting quick profits often leads to disappointment. Risk does not turn investment into gambling.  but lack of planning and ignorance can turn investment into gambling-like behavior.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to "non-custodial"

It is necessary to have a long-term view in Bitcoin investment to reduce volatility. Expecting quick profits often leads to disappointment. Risk does not turn investment into gambling.  but lack of planning and ignorance can turn investment into gambling-like behavior.

You are correct that there are levels to gambling, so the more that a game of luck is involved, then the higher on the gambling spectrum and the more risky, even if maybe the odds might be known, if there is no skill involved beyond the calculation of the odds, then playing that game would be higher on the risky side and more on the gambling side.

With trading there can be claims of skills, yet they are still based on odds that might or might not be calculated correctly, except perhaps to the extent that a person might have inside knowledge about some market moving event that is likely to happen that the rest of the market does not know about.  Trading can frequently be quite similar to gambling based on difficulties in knowing short-term BTC price direction, even when believing to know.

Many investors will "just say no" to selling bitcoin, especially when sales of bitcoin are made with expectations of buying back cheaper.  So then many times investing will deal with building up bitcoin holdings through buying only, even though surely some guys might start to sell some of their bitcoin with expectations of buying back cheaper, and other guys may well start to sell some portions of their bitcoin after they believe that they reached a high enough level of accumulation in which they believe that they either have enough bitcoin or more than enough bitcoin. These may well end up being bitcoin management an maintenance calls that sometimes could be confused with trading and/or gambling, yet sometimes the difference between gambling and investing might deal with quantities of bitcoin bought and sold and perhaps the purpose of selling, whether the sales are being done to buy back cheaper or to just shave off profits.

Of course, complexities of gambling and trading can relate to adding margin and leverage rather than merely using portions of discretionary funds as the discretionary funds come available.   Investors will mostly not use the more advanced tools of leverage and/or trading so investors tend to merely have ongoing longs that are built up from their discretionary funds, and over the short term, traders and gamblers can outperform investors, since they can bet on both directions, and sometimes even be correct for extended periods of time, yet historically in bitcoin it has been quite difficult for traders/gamblers to beat the bitcoin investors over a couple of cycles or more, including that many times, the traders will end up selling way too much bitcoin too soon, so then they end up not have much if any bitcoin as the bitcoin prices go up, and the mere fact that bitcoin has had various upward exponential price surges in the past does not guarantee that any exponential upward price surges are going to end up playing out in bitcoin's future.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

Between investment and trading which one is more comparable to gambling? I definitely agree that trading isn't gambling but when compared to investing in bitcoin one can say that trading is much closer to gambling than investing is, there's risk involved in everything thing that we do and that includes bitcoin investment which is why we should invest with money we can afford to lose because the chances that we are going to lose it might not be high compared to the chance of success but it is still not zero but those chances are much higher with trading, it's much easier to lose your money to it than to gain from it making it more comparable to gambling than bitcoin investment is.

This things you want us to learn before we can start can be learnt through the experience that we get when we start investing. We are not an historian so why should we then delay from starting to ongoingly invest just because we want t to learn why bitcoin exist, what benefit will that even be to our investment huh?

And you advise learning self custody,. I think you are just misplacing priorities before as far as I know, person who has not accumulated any btcoin, what exactly do you now what the person to be protecting huh? The best appreciate is just to get started with your ongoing investment no matter the size of discretionary income you have and then you can be learning along the way

And how do you also want person to learn about volatility without starting huh? People should just get started instead of endlessly delaying their selves

I love your points .As for getting started, we don't need to know or learn everything about bitcoin because we may end up not starting to invest in bitcoin with the mindset of wanting to know more about bitcoin. If someone is able to figure out there discretionary income and they feel that they need to learn more before starting, they can  start investing using a smaller percentage of there discretionary income. Then whenever they feel that they have gained more knowledge about bitcoin they can increase the amount they allocate to bitcoin.
The  idea of learning about self custody before starting is not necessary because all of this can be learn as we are ongoing with bitcoin accumulation and most folks may find it difficult to understand most of this thing unless they are actually investing in bitcoin.

Someone can avoid all of these by simply beginning to buy bitcoin once they've figured out their discretionary income.

If guys invest with low amount of money, they should also try their possible best to look for sustainable ways to generate more income in other to accumulate more bitcoin. As your income grows, you can gradually increase the amount you invest in Bitcoin instead of relying on just the small amount, That way they won't end up with  small bitcoin.  Starting with low amount like $5 is very okay whilethat is still better than not investing at all ,but they shouldn't depend on the  low amount, because it might not accumulate enough bitcoin in 4 or more  years.  In 4 years accumulation period that $5 Would be $960(in both bullish and bearish market), which looks small, so as the gains that will comes out of it after holding for longer periods of time.  The goal shouldn't be to start small alone but to also find ways to  increase their buying power if their  financial situation improves.

I think both sides are emphasizing different stages of the same journey. Getting started is important because experience teaches lessons that theory alone cannot. At the same time, a beginner should not mistake start now for start blindly.
Before buying Bitcoin, knowing the basics, like why Bitcoin exists, its volatility, self-custody, and only investing discretionary income helps prevent avoidable mistakes. You don't need expert-level knowledge, but you should understand enough to make an informed decision. After that, learning and accumulating can happen simultaneously. In my view, investment and education should complement each other, not compete. Starting with a small DCA while continuously learning strikes a balance between avoiding analysis paralysis and avoiding unnecessary mistakes.

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to "non-custodial"

There is value in starting out slowly and learning as you go, but there is no need to know why bitcoin exists, its volatility and/or self custody, before starting, since those can be learned as you go, and also if you don't know those things, the beginner can choose to start out with buying $30 in bitcoin rather than $100.  It is his choice, and he does not have to learn the things that you mentioned as long as he determines that he has discretionary funds, he can get started buying bitcoin, adjust his starting position to his comfort level and study as he goes.

I completely understand now,I presumed it's important you have those knowledge before you start because knowing those things I listed don't necessarily have to take time(could be between few hours), just information that could guild the chioces you'll make before you start and as you go through bitcoin investment but it's obvious discretionary income is very important at the point to start up.
