Is there a Bitcoin ban in your country? What is the government's stance? Are there taxes, are there strict regulations? Can you use Bitcoin for purchases? Can you trade crypto-currencies freely? If there are bans in your country, is there an opposition party or leader that promises to lift them? If there are bans, do you still vote for the government because you like their other policies? Or would you vote for an opposition that has a positive view of Bitcoin?

Let me hear your thoughts and don't forget to mention your country.

I'm a Nigerian and in my country, there's a crypto ban that the government financial sectors shouldn't be involved in fascinating crypto transactions but though, individuals can free to proceed.
There had also been an Off and ON of the government accepting and declining from the involvement with cryptocurrency.
As for the tax, the Crypto is taxed free .
There haven't been any party governmental party that opposes system and non is even showing lights of interest in the lift of the ban
If you asked me about throught about it, I'll keep agitating for the band but any case, I don't feel bothered about the regulations since it doesn't affect me as an individual.

Thank you for the replies. In the first few answers, you didn't mention which country you were in, so I couldn't understand which place you were talking about. Fortunately, the later replies were more proper. Indonesia seems similar to our country Türkiye. Trading is allowed, but Bitcoin can't be used for payments.
Most of the responses came from Nigeria. I'd like to learn about the situation in more different countries as well.

I am from Indonesia, some members who are from this country have explained it in quite a bit of detail. In short, I am quite satisfied with the regulation that my government has done on bitcoin and or other cryptocurrencies, especially on taxes, the taxation is quite low for buying and selling crypto.

In my country our government have no clear stands between dislike and like of bitcoin, before now there was a ban in cryptocurrency related transactions with banks but not that bitcoin use was clearly ban and today we are free to use crypto not taxed but currently we are beginning to get taxed for incomes regardless of whether it's crypto or not, so since the government have no clear grounds if they want it or not it stays in the clouds yet used freely. not banned nor accepted either just there with free use.
The government of the day in Nigeria are just interested in making income tax from the profits of bitcoiners and other cryptocurrencies and not that they care about making clear terms on cryptocurrency regulations in the country but just as you mentioned, they're sitting on the fence in the aspect of what their stance is. And as a result even persons that do accept bitcoin for payment in their business have to do it on a hidden mode and not as freely as I think you mean to public knowledge.

In my country, the government's ban on Bitcoin is not something we really like. However, currently the government has made a ban on Bitcoin but is not strictly enforcing it. Of course, the government is not interested in legality in this regard. However, in my country, more than 4 million people are directly and indirectly involved in Bitcoin transactions, but the government does not take any legal action in this regard. From this point of view, the government is definitely working in favor of Bitcoin users. However, I do not think that the government will take any positive decision regarding Bitcoin in the future. However, Bitcoin is strictly prohibited and will not take any legal action.

Wow it turns out that you are from Turkey, Turkey is a place that I want to visit later, I want to feel the Cappadocia ride.

It turns out to have similarities about bitcoin in our country, I want to question that in holding bitcoin in your country is taxed (outside of transaction tax), and whether your bitcoin ownership must be reported to the government as your asset?, in my country imposes it, although holding bitcoin must be reported but not taxed.

This is good to Know. I am a Nigerian and I am not happy on the government stance of bitcoin. In 2021 February or March there about, the then government banned bitcoin in the country and stopped all the banks to stopped transacting with bitcoin. In 2022/2023 the ban was lifted and banks were accepting bitcoin and some of the key retail stores, like Iphone and Android Phone stores were accepting bitcoin as one of their payment method, and in 2023, the new government on ground had a feud with the Decentralized Exchanges in the country. And 2 of the Binance staff were arrested and in that process, the government stopped the use of bitcoin in the country and Banks stopped using and nobody mentioned it in their Bank statements and if any does. The person bank account will be blocked.

However, we are using bitcoin secretly and not publicly. We don't mention it in any of the local transaction. And foe now, there is no shop or store that is publicly accepting bitcoin but if you ask them secretly, they accept.

There seems to be lots of misinformation here especially in bolded parts. As far as Nigeria is concerned, banks have never for once accept Bitcoin either before or after the banned was lifted. I don't even get it, what do you mean by banks accepting bitcoin? Like you'll walk into a bank and deposit bitcoin? Also, there is a difference between Decentralized and Centralised exchanges, Binance as mentioned in your post is a Cex (centralised exchange) and Nigeria government never had issue with decentralized exchange but with centralised exchanges accusing them of manipulating NGN (Nigeria currency) value with Binance topping the list. Binance was later forced to suspend its operation in Nigeria alongside OKX up to this moment.

Nigeria government stance on bitcoin is fussy and double standard thou, it really call for concern as users get their Bank accounts flagged for including any crypto related terminology in transaction narration while government claim it has lifted the ban. Perhaps, it's a plot to introduce crypto tax without allowing the exchange to offer full service like crypto to fiat swap using cards or P2P with Nigerian currency.

In 2026, we have moved past the stage where they try to ban Bitcoin.  They realized that doesnt work.  Instead, they are just suffocating it with paperwork.  Its a classic "if you cant beat them, choke them" strategy.  As of 01 January 2026, all crypto platforms operating within the European Union will be required to report the name of each user as well as the amount of crypto that user has traded directly to the tax authorities.  There is no longer privacy in this regard.  There is no longer a need for the authorities to prove that someone owes tax; they can simply wait for the information to be submitted by the platform and then send a bill.

It could be a sign that something big is coming from the people side because history always proved that when power tried to hide something under the radar but people badly want it that will just turns everything upside down and it will happen. I am not saying bitcoin is going to change the governments but what if.... Wink

Yes, Bitcoin is banned in my country. Not only Bitcoin, but all cryptocurrencies are banned in my country. The government is very strict about it. No, the opposition party did not make any promises. There is no discussion about cryptocurrency in my country, despite many people using it. Since none of them have any knowledge about Bitcoin, I would choose the party that promises to erase the corruption and crime. I am not much hopeful about it since most of the of the party end up doing crime and corruption themself. They cannot erase their own party. As some of you may know, I am from Bangladesh.

Indonesia's cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are not illegal and not legal, as long as users comply with the existing rules, all users are free to carry out activities in the crypto market, this all has a reason, namely taxes, I understand that the government's economy currently generates the most income from crypto taxes.

What makes me dissatisfied with the government is the indifferent situation, they should have communicated to the public about the position of Bitcoin for society in general.

By the way, I'm curious about Turkey too. From some news I read, there is no tax on capital gains from crypto trading,  and there is only tax on income. Is that true?
I think this is a good point about that country.

And the tax there seems to be very cheap, around 0.03%, right?
And I'm surprised that it's as cheap as the tax in our country used to be. Unfortunately, taxes in my country have increased, albeit slightly.
In Indonesia, the original income tax (PPh) and value-added tax (PPN) rates were around 0.1% to 0.2% for PPh and 0.11% for PPN. however, since PPN has been abolished, the tax here is now only PPh at 0.21%. And still, Turkey seems to have lower taxes. I always thought Indonesia was the cheapest but it turns out I was wrong.

There is no ban in my country(PH) and the government's stance in it is positive ever since. But the problem is about the government trying to gatekeep the market only for the local exchanges and they're not allowing anymore other exchanges like binance, bybit and the others to penetrate into our country. Even CZ, he personally visited the country and had said that there's something that's stopping them from registration even they are willing to cooperate with the government. That's why many of us, the locals are disappointed with that when the usual exchanges you know guys are banned. Our ISPs have blocked it but, we've got ways to connect through VPN.

Let me hear your thoughts and don't forget to mention your country. Smiley
I am from Indonesia. I cannot say how satisfied I am with the government's stance on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. Personally, as an Indonesian citizen, I am satisfied with their stance on Bitcoin.

I can still enjoy owning Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies because they do not ban Bitcoin like other countries that do. I and others are free to trade Bitcoin as a regulated asset because there are no exchanges that do not require KYC. The taxes imposed on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are also not excessive.

Another source of satisfaction is that I and others do not have to hide even though it is banned as a legal payment method.

I am dissatisfied with the government's approach to Bitcoin in our country. It feels as though the local community is being pressured into using domestic exchanges instead of global platforms.

Most local users strongly prefer foreign exchanges because the service quality of our local alternatives is subpar. We shouldn't be forced
into using platforms that don't meet our standards.

So far so good the government of my country is doing so much to tax every sector of the economy including individuals who are independent business owners or earn in crypto currency from offering online services.

It is more or less a shift from ban and prohibition to taxes and regulations. It is so strict that Bitcoin and other digital assets is being considered securities, instead of a currency, that is, it is treated like stock or bonds under the new implemented legal framework.

My country Nigeria, is no longer doing so much as to ban or prohibit the use of Bitcoin and other digital assets, instead it wants to control it by taxing it and tracking every individual transactions, hence why so many local apps these days are licensed so as to share individual information and report it as part of annual tax filing for the individual holder or trader.

Yes, but some do publicly claim they accept it but most of the claimers I have known are just online business, however the government interest is just to raise as much money as they can raise to put in to the pocket of the law makers or the elites  of the country if not whatever other countries have done about bitcoin regulations the Nigeria government would have done same but they of course wouldn't do that because it will reduce the level of pay they will get in their pockets, this are not fallacies but fact. In today's Nigeria we are in between, accepting bitcoin and not accepting it.

There are people from almost every country on this forum and I like how it is. We can get different perspectives from different regions. Even though a lot of information is available on the internet, being able to learn the views of people from that region directly is a big advantage. So I wanted to ask you about the attitude of the authorities in your country toward Bitcoin.

Smiley

I know it's never get too late to reply on this thread, though you must have got some responses from my country people here, but I would also like to chip in some reviews of my country Nigeria 🇳🇬.

Honestly I was very happy with the way my country Government, authorities or regulatory bodies does to us the citizens, because there's no any law that stated clearly on banning of Bitcoin used or cryptocurrency rather, but in Nigeria  cryptocurrency is legal but not regulated as of passed year. However the citizens enjoyed dealing with cryptocurrency activities freely and are aslo free from crypto Taxes.

Some years back Nigeria chooses cryptocurrency over stocks check here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EbQ5ftVLzTo

Doesn't really matter to me, why? Because back when it was illegal to even own bitcoin, I owned it, and then when it was legal to own it but illegal to trade it, I still traded it, and when it was illegal to create a token, or invest into tokens and do funding, I still did it.

Nowadays everything about it is legal, you are literally just not allowed to do whatever is normally illegal with fiat, like you can't of course steal from others or scam them, but in any other case, whatever you can do with fiat, you can do with crypto, and I still use it. Moreover, with the help of giftcard providers and crypto loadable debit card services, I slowly stop tracking the stance of my government against cryptocurrencies these days.

Most of the responses came from Nigeria. I'd like to learn about the situation in more different countries as well.

I think most of countries now have same situation, since mostly what we can encounter is Bitcoin is fine to be traded or invest, but there's limited or no merchants currently accepting it.

But there are efforts done before in our country Philippines and there's a project called Bitcoin Island they started year 2022 on which they made partnership with hundreds of local merchants to implement Bitcoin as their alternative payment https://cryptoofficiel.com/boracay-aka-bitcoin-island-has-over-130-merchants-accepting-bitcoin/

There's foreign traveler create a video about it and try to pay Bitcoin on merchants on Boracay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTRFEDtVyZI I just don't know what's the current status this project or adaption this year.

Also look how beautiful it is, if countries would do the same there's good chance they can attract lots of tourist to come in their country.

Not particularly happy. Most governments are still skeptical about Bitcoin. Approaching it with control and fear.

What I truly expect is regulation that promotes innovation and help protect users. Rather it's met with mixed signals and heavy restrictions.

One certainty is Bitcoin isn't going away. Governments that show openers would surely benefit in the long term. Those who act otherwise would just push innovation elsewhere.
