What his father said was a warning, his father's superstition acted as a healthy defense mechanism (an illusion of control that prevents harm), which effectively prevented his son from entering the casino. However, his father suggestions contradicted his psychology, he argued that superstitions (like his lucky charm) had the paradoxical effect of reducing anxiety, increasing self-confidence, and helping him play with more focus. While he breaks the superstition by enjoying the game, he also believes that the "unlucky family" as his father called it actually has the opposite effect. His response was contrary to what his father said due to the feeling of having to prove the superstition wrong or chase lost luck which eventually led him into addiction. For compulsive gamblers, superstition only reinforces the illusion of control that encourages them to continue gambling even when the odds are against them.

I recently watched an interview with a compulsive gambler and for the first time heard that superstition can actually be beneficial in gambling. I'm a skeptic, and I thought that superstitions only have negative effects in gambling, as they give a false sense of control. So, here's the story: When the gambler from the interview went to the casino for the first time, he really enjoyed it. He told his father about it. And his father said, "Son, don't gamble in casinos, because we are an unlucky family, and that's why we try to stay away from games of chance." And this superstition affected him; he thought for a long time about giving up gambling. But in the end, the temptation proved stronger, and... now he's sitting in the interview as the main character – a gambler out of control. First off, "we are an unlucky family" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It's like stupidity pushed to its extreme. What can be more stupid? "We are an unlucky country"? "We are an unlucky planet"? I'm not surprised that guy ended up as an addicted gambler. Stupidity is the root of all evil. A farther like that couldn't teach him anything good. Poor guy. I hope he'll read some books and become wiser and happier.

Because if we did, then we are just going to attract negative things not just in gambling but in life. It seems that this kind of mindset, they are all doomed to lose. Maybe it's not superstitions but again, the negative mindset. So I wouldn't go that far to think this way. When I gamble, I also think very positive that I'm going to win and win big money. If I lose, then so be it. At least I have tried to be my best version.

There is something called taboos for the kids in my country, these taboos are not true but they use it to shape kids behavior. If the kid grow to adult, he will understand that it is not true at all but people are only painting it true for the kids to believe. It is for the benefit of the kids. This is similar to what you are talking about.
You are right , sometime our parents tells things that are not real, and we accept as kids and work towards that believe, hoping that is how it has always been in the family,I could remember my dad told me something when I was small ,I listen and obey with fear ,not knowing he was scaring me away from it ,I just discovered it was a means for me not to go through that part ,the only way he could do it was to fabricate a story that wasn't real self,it was funny when I found out the truth ,but trust me it helped me not to go through that part . We would be able to realize these things at the moment or time that we do become adult or we do become mature on which these superstitions turned out to be just that a thing for us to be able to avoid something when our parents been telling like this and like that but as said that once you do become mature and knowing on things around. Well we do have our own perspective in lfie on which it could be neither we do follow them or not. Now we are speaking about gambling then i dont really see for it to be relevant on trying out to apply something into it just because luck factor isnt something that could really be influence by things around but we do know that there are instances or situations that you do become be able to make something that apply into it believe into it just because you have won something at the time that you do able to play.

My opinion is, even if superstitions ever help someone to win in gambling, that «sometimes» happens so rare, that it is better not to rely on them much or better to ignore. I dont know how to even test if they work, because I dont know how to tell difference if it was superstition that helped to win, or just random win. Because it is hard to predict with 100% chance when you will win, it is hard to tell what works and helps to win, and what not.
I think it is nothing more than luck, because as we know it happens sometimes and there is no mechanism of any kind as a guarantee to confirm it can be used effectively, Of course my view is more realistic and considers that it is luck. We can see people with a variety of data alone with many methods of analysis can not be sure 100% prediction will be correct, this with some superstitious beliefs that the source is only based on belief of course the answer is only one.

Agree with you because we need to be rational and thinks that everything can happens so superstitions can't be right. We can trust superstitions but we don't have to rely on instead research to finds the reason why we should pick that. Sometimes I follow my feelings but I don't blindly just follow but making research to see behinds that. We will not have an accurate prediction so we still difficult to wins even if we count on superstitions but if some people still following superstitions, that is up to them and let them see the result.

I really enjoyed your whole comment but I decided to cut some out and focus on this part. The son thought against his father belief. I think the father was trying to stopped him from entering deeper in gambling so he won't lost funds like the way he , the father did. But the son decided to prove him wrong that his luck is not the same as the father. I must beat my father belief and he had some streaks wins which led him to out of control in gambling. And if we critically look at the story. The father still beat the son because the father was warning to steer clear from gambling so he won't lost inside but the son disagreed and continue gambling and finally became the addicted one. Which the father was telling him that they have not won anything because addiction had taken everything back again. This should be a wise saying.

The reason many superstitions become popular is because people recall the few times that they worked out, though they forget all the times that they didn't. This is a typical psychological fallacy, particularly in gambling, where each and every achieve is significant. There's nothing wrong with wearing a lucky shirt or having a personal ritual if they feel more relaxed doing so as long as it doesn't affect the way the game is played. The real trouble begins when people think that they can beat the house edge or always win because of their superstition. Then they can begin to make bad choices and go after losing money rather than understanding that gambling is probability and luck and not ritual.

Yes, we cannot rely on it. We can believe in superstitions, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean we have to apply them to everything that we do. There are instances when superstitions can be harmful to us because we always think about them in everything we do. When it comes to gambling, we are spending money here, real money. So we must always be careful with our choices of bets, and we cannot just let superstitions decide for us because that is almost the same as blind betting, and I don't think that's a good decision.

I was thinking maybe reverse would be he case, the story would have been something like a person who never believed in superstition won big by superstition. For example, some people claims that they don't agree that getting lottery numbers from an isane person can bring good luck, or getting a lottery number in dreams can help them win, but however after giving it a thought, the person decided to try Betting a lottery number gotten from dream for the first time and he won. That is how superstition is supposed to be helpful and not the other way round.

You are right, gambling results are random and the illusion of control doesn't have any effect on the game like a lot of gamblers think it does, gambling is a game based on either skills or luck, superstitious beliefs are people's personal ideas that they chose to believe in. The only reason why they might be confident that this works is when they have a coincidental win.

I can vouch for what you're saying, because I have a few broski who are genuinely superstitious when they gamble. Initially, they did not believe in superstitions, but after gambling & winning when a series of coincidences aligned, they became convinced by them. One of their habits is that they have to light up a cigarette whenever they get freespin or what we commonly know as a scatter, they won't light one up until that scatter actually appears, it's absolutely crazy.

First of all I want to say that I am not superstitious at all and really do not believe in superstition. However the people sometimes need to console themselves for the big losses they get and superstition is one such thing that makes things a bit easier to swallow. As for a personal case this very day I was watching the F1 race and was saying to myself if Verstappen gets out I win the round in a betting pool I am in and in less than 30 seconds he was truly out.

You just made me remember this traditional man that predicted Cape Verde are going to win Argentina and the opposite happen. The dude has been young viral from the very time he made predictions of teams that are going to win the world cup stages but the clever traditional guy with voodoo was actually good but was just using his time to make fun until the prediction wasn't going as expected anymore and everyone has forgotten his existence. The truth is there is nothing like superstition in gambling, if you like have 3 deagons or believe in fairy tales, the game that will win is going to win and the game is that will loss is going to lose. There is nothing spectacular about any secret when it comes to gambling and there is no my secret anywhere. However, you need skills to win my games, if anyone tell you that you need another thing, then know you are been lied too.

Superstitions are never beneficial, but when we highlight them, many times we get caught up in coincidental events and later face losses. For example, in the previous match against Portugal, a fortune teller predicted Portugal's victory. And it also coincidentally happened. Later in the match, he predicted Argentina's loss, that is, he said that this is Argentina's last match in this World Cup. In this case, if someone had bet according to the result of the previous match and the prediction of that fortune teller, he would have definitely faced a big loss. In fact, all superstitions may benefit someone temporarily, but the blind faith in superstitions causes people to suffer.

This is an interesting example because it shows that an irrational belief sometimes leads to a positive outcome. In this case the father's superstitions acts as a warning strategy rather than acting on the winning. If the son had taken his fathers words seriously it might have kept him away from gambling. The problem with this is that most gambling related superstitions work in the opposite direction. People think they have a lucky number or a lucky sit that greatly increases their chances of winning which encourages them to chase and lose. I don't think the superstitions itself is the solution. The real lesson is that anything that helps people recognize that the risk of gambling which can come from anyone.

I think any system can be useful if you stick to it. Superstition could fall into that category depending on how you are reacting to the superstition. I’ve never really thought of it like that, but I guess making sure that your reaction to a superstition is a positive thing could definitely be beneficial for you.

But I think that superstition can never be solved in the long run, because its foundation is shaky. Even if something positive happens once or twice because of superstition, in the end it makes people turn away from reality, I would say the main risk here is that when gamblers believe an unscientific belief to be true, they blame their losses on fate. As a result , they lose the ability to correct their mistakes or think realistically about their addiction. So in my opinion if you have to keep someone away from gambling, explaining the real reasons is much more effective.

It doesn't matter who comes from what kind of family. Those who gamble a little too much will gradually become uncontrollable. The success of the reform here is not acceptable in any way in the story he is sharing. It is common knowledge that those who gamble will lose and those who chase after recovering those losses will gradually become addicted. Because gambling games are very attractive and since there are big winnings here, people's greed for money and emotions make them addicted to gambling. Gambling is based on luck, but it applies to everyone, not to a specific person And addiction is the result of irresponsible gambling.
