Like you asked, it might be a lie. If it is, it's us lying to ourselves. Why would we lie to ourselves? Because we want to know the truth, but maybe the truth is more difficult than we can understand.
I believe in 'multiversal branches'. But I believe that they are simply other universes that exist right next to ours, but vibrate at a different universe frequency than ours. There is a lot of space in an atom compared to the sizes of the components of the atom... electrons, protons, neutrons. And these seem to be made up of smaller 'particles' that have a lot of empty space in them, as well. But all of that is simply science description because scientists, if they know it any different, can't explain it any other way, and yet have it make sense to the layman.
Search on "parallel universes."
I believe that the particles (subatomic particals) of our universe are more clearly understood to think of them as 'junctures' where 2 or more of the parallel universes touch each other... to become particles of our universe. Remember that when you get that small, particles and waves become very similar.
A far as the soul goes, the soul is a complexity of wave interactions that survive no matter how small they become, and without a body to contain them.
God made the universe in 6 days... or at least made it as it is now. Consider how great God must be. And if He uses cause and effect as is found throughout the universe, think of how great
His science must be.
I could throw a garage together in 6 days. But a universe???
Mankind doesn't really have a clue.
