Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

In our country, it’s an insult or a mockery since gambling here is branded as negative activity even if you are using it for entertainment purposes.

People automatically judge you as wasting money or irresponsible even though they don’t know exactly how you spend money on gambling.

Until now, only my close friend and wife only knew I’m gambling online.

If the person is well know to be making money from gambling and people know that. If someone called him a gambler, he will not take it personal or be annoyed. It has a way the person's friend will also call him gambler but he will not be annoyed.

If the person is losing money and people know about it and the person is losing in a way nobody will be happy about. If someone called him a gambler or he heard someone telling another person that he is a gambler. He can be very angry about it.

I use that word as fun when I'm talking to my fellow gambler, apart from that I don't call anyone a gambler if he isn't my friend. I wouldn't feel bad if someone calls me a gambler because majority of people in my area gambles and sees it as a means to get quick money without doing anything.

There are also gambling stories of people who have hit it big in gambling but got broke living in my area. So no one sees it as a crime or an abusive name.

Gambling is part of life and some people even take Gambling as a career, take politicians for example their activities are based on gambling and they choose it as a lifetime chase, I often time hear the big politicians referring to themselves as gamblers since they game is based on luck and uncertainty.

Depending on what type of gambler you are referred to and what action lead to that nae being caller a gambler, that determine how you feel and take the name calling of (Gambler).

If someone is referred to as a gambler in an irresponsible manner and states, that name trigger anger,  but if youare winning at something and you doing it responsibly, then being reffered to as gambler give you more joy and sense of winning and excitement.

I leave them. I have no business to deal with people who have no respect to me since my environment is not really welcoming gambler.

I don't feel proud of it. Calling others as a gambler is an insult. When someone can call you with your name, why does he call you as a gambler? It shows no respect to you. It's kinda crazy when you'er seeing it as a compliment.

However, others may have different opinon. This is depending in what context is it. Different people, different context and pov.

There's a way to avoid this. Do not tell them that you gamble every day. My neighbors know that I gamble, but they only know that I do it with the NBA game, especially during the playoffs and the Finals, because they sometimes make a bet against me on those big events.
They never knew that I place a bet almost every day, or if there is a game available, because they do not need to know. All they want is to have someone to bet against whenever they want to, and I am always available if they have an offer. The Finals are the most popular of all, and it has become like a tradition now that we will be making a bet either on who's going to pay for the drinks and snacks or through money. Still, they do not call me a gambler. If ever they will, I won't take it seriously at all.

Maybe it depends on the situation. If I’m a winning gambler and someone calls me that, I’d probably take it as a compliment, but if I’m losing, it just feels like adding insult to injury and I’d be annoyed. These days though, most of us gamble online anyway, so nobody really knows. Only we know how we’re actually doing, and it’s up to us if we share it or not.

Personally, whenever someone calls me a gambler i don't feel ashamed or see it like an insult, even though i may not really know what their own reasons are for calling me a gambler, or from what perspective they are calling me a gambler. The only time I'd feel ashamed or bad about being called a gambler is when i know I'm gambling irresponsibly and that gambling is having an obvious negative effect on me, then I'd know that the the person is just mocking me or just tryinng to piss me, but as long as i know I;m not an irresponsible gambler then i really have nothing to be ashamed of.

It depends on the outcome of your gambling activities. If you are successful in life through whatever means, people will like you and want to learn from you that thing that makes you successful. So if you are gambling and you are progressing in life with profits to show which is reflecting in your lifestyle and standard of living and wellbeing, it won't be embarrassing or insulting but where you are unkept, not progressing and living a wasteful life, it is even your family that will be throwing insult on you. Like they say, success has followership but failure face rejection. If I'm a successful gambler, I will feel good and see whatever people say to me as compliment. In fact, if you are successful and someone says you are a gambler, they are not saying it to deride you but to praise you to be able to break into what they are not able to. It shows smartness and high level intelligence to be a successful gambler.

When or if ever someone calls me a gambler off the internet, I will never feel proud or feel insulted, to me, the feeling will be casual as being called a gambler is neither an insult or compliment..

But this is me, we are different and I perfectly understand that someone else may either take this as an insult or a compliment.. So let me say that if one calls another a gambler maybe in a public place, how that person chooses to see or react to this will depend solely on how the person sees or perceives gambling..
If the person is a gambler who is proud to be a gambler, he did take that as a compliment, but if the person is one who does not like gambling and see it as something that is immoral, then it's likely such one will take being called a gambler as an insult.
For me, I gamble but it's on a casual level, I do not take gambling serious to say it's something I am proud of, no, but I definitely do not hate gambling or gamblers, so if I am called a gambler in the public, it's nothing to feel insulted about.

I don’t really mind being called a gambler, honestly I’d even say I’m proud of it because for me it just means I’m a risk taker. As long as I’m not doing anything that would ruin myself or hurt other people, I’m fine with that label and in my case I see it as something positive.

What I don’t like is when gambling gets used as an excuse for crimes. If someone steals money and then suddenly gets called a gambler, it feels like they’re trying to blame gambling for the crime itself, which doesn’t really make sense.

Being a responsible gambler is a different thing altogether and that’s something I can stand by. Not everyone can handle risk the way a gambler does, and that’s where the real difference is.

I don't see anything offensive about it. A person's reputation is what matters. If people speak well of you and say you're a good player, is that a bad thing? But if a person has no job, is in debt, and is also a gambler, then yes, it will sound negative. It all depends on the context and who is being talked about. It seems to me that we dislike e-sports players more, and they are ridiculed more than gamblers.

Depends on who is saying and how they say it. If it's my friends and then they are just making fun of you, then I won't take it as a insult, maybe that's just their terms of endearment to you. But if someone that you didn't know or at least a person you only know by name just because they are neighbors, then I will take it personally as he or she didn't know who am I. Before I had a discussion with this with my old neighbor. Old neighbor trying to give me life lessons about gambling and other vices. However, I don't like it because I don't know her that much and we are not close. So I have to answer her back and trying to defend myself and told her to stop as she can't even control his nephews or nieces who had bad vices as well. So before you preach to someone, try to clean your own backyard first, if you know what I mean.

Gambling is not a bad thing, so calling me a gambler outside in real life is no problem to me. There has to be scenarios that would warrant referring to me as a gambler and it would be acceptable. If we are just on a casual note or having fun and you refer to me as a gambler, then it is acceptable and it is the truth since I do gamble.
On a serious setting like in an office meeting or while carrying out a serious assignment, such titles would not be appropriate since it would undermine the professional conduct that should be of priority.

If people who are around are gamblers, and they call me a gambler, I won't see it as an insult because they are my fellow gamblers, and it could be a way for them to have fun with me. But if people who aren't gamblers call me a gambler, I will see it as an insult and mockery because they don't have the right to call me a gambler since they aren't my fellow gamblers.

I don't feel insulted at all. I live a good life, and gambling is not something that harmed me, and I am really a gambler. I will not be true to myself if I deny that I'm not.

It's a big concern if you are addicted to gambling and you describe a gambler as something that is a menace, and you don't want to be described that way, if gambling is not something that harmed you and you benefit from it, why take it as an insult?

A gambler is a person who risk an amount for something, it could be risk on anything. I don't see it as an insult unless you make a reference to it as society standard of thinking because when they refer you as a gambler, they see you as irresponsible person, they see you as an addicted person that lack self control when it comes to gambling and a person that risk more than they can afford to lose. For me, I don't see it as an insult even if you take it from another point of view.

I think what people call you if you gamble is nothing to worry about. You should be worry about what you do, we have people that are doing gambling and making money and living that regular people find hard to do and they don't even see them as gamblers. They reference them as analysts instead of a bettor which I don't even see as anything, what people call you about your profession should never be your problem, your aim and objectives should be.

In my country, as soon as people find out you gamble, they look down on you. People have a certain mentality when it comes to gambling though you can't really blame them, because they
often see so many people getting addicted to it, which ultimately leads to ruined lives. So, once they find out you are a gambler here you will be insult of course.

Although we gamblers know that not everyone has bad intentions, if we have discipline and avoid being greedy, we can be sure that we won't end up falling into the trap
of addiction in the end.

From a country that composed of catholic, being called a gambler is actually an insult as many of the people here claimed that it was a sin to gamble. Personally I don't care if they tell me I'm a gambler because honestly and technically I am, no matter how much you play with as long as you gamble, you're a gambler. However, I'm trying to keep it private and I don't usually tell other that I gamble because I won't get anything from it honestly. But if someone told me I'm a gambler, I don't actually care as long as it's my money that I'm playing with and I don't actually bother other people for money.
