Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.

Gambling is not a job, neither is it something that anyone should be proud of doing, or rather take as a source of income so I would feel a bit insulted if someone calls me a gambler but for personal pereference, not in a general sense. In most countries, like mine too, gamblers are seen same way as drug addicts which we all know does not reflect a good image in the society,  so I would prefer i keep my gambling life private and not have to deal with the public involvement.

Me on gambling sites & me in social circles are 2 different personalities, I place me when gambling as my alter ego. If someone calls me a gambler in a social circles, it's a form of insult in my opinion. Luckily, I've never been called that either at work or in social circles. Gamblers are a form of allusion because in our country gambling activities are also prohibited, if someone is caught doing it, the gambler will get social sanctions.

In my area, if you're called a gambler, it's like an insult. The word "gambler" has a negative connotation, and being called a gambler is often seen as irresponsible.

Even though I gamble too, if someone calls me a gambler, it's just annoying. They don't need to say things like that, even if they know I gamble, because it's none of their business, and I won't bother with anything of theirs.

It depends on who calls it and also depends on the situation that warranted it. Someone can not just see me and echo the name "gambler" Unless it's one of my best friend who also joins us in our gambling activities. If it's not a very close friend or someone that you can tell where that is coming from, then it's a mockery. I don't even think anyone would do that here, even my friends wouldn't do that as much as I don't also call them gamblers. If someone calls me that, I probably ask them not to do that again.

If someone called you a gambler in the public meaning you let them saw you gambling or you tell them personally which means you shouldn’t have to be bother how it sounds like to you as this is the repercussions of your own action.

Honestly, I view as a neutral remark since I don’t consider gambling as bad nor good as a title.

It’s a form of entertainment so it’s not worthy to make it a big deal.

It depends on a moment, context and intonation I was called a gambler, as well as who will tell that. A person might want to tell that I am a risky person, or he might want to tell that I dont have a strong point in something and prefer random result. "We can not buy this because our father is gambler" sound insulting. But "our father loves to gamble with his life and sky jumping every weekend" sound different and hint that father is brave and experienced.

Gambling is about taking risk on something that is very uncertain with the hope of making financial or material profit which I think everyone does, but because the name gambling sounds very negative in the ears of so many people, even though some persons are seen as responsible gamblers, it is totally very wrong to call someone a gambler, reactions may also vary according to individuals, while some people may take it lightly, others may be very fierce in their actions.

How I feel depends on how the person addresses me. There are some insults and mockery that are presented as compliments. If I'm gambling and everyone knows that I gamble, if they reference me as a gambler, I don't see anything bad in that, but if it's in a situation where they call me a chronic gambler and mock me, then I might try to address that and correct the person to know the difference between being a gambler and others.

For me that word "gamblers" has different meanings, it just depends on how it's been used to address a person, some see it as someone who takes a smart risks while others as an addiction. So I will say that it's how you sees it that will determine the category the person falls into and it's also depends on the mindset of the person, if see or do gamble with wisdom and contol over yourself, then you won't feel bad when you're being called a gambler cuz you know what you're doing but when you're being called outside or for those people outside the word still sounds negative or still  gives bad impression about you

I do not think there is anything insulting to being called a gambler. However it really depends on your own subjective perspective and the context.
You could deem it insulting if you already think badly of yourself for gambling or you could be fine with it but someone is calling you a gambler in a negative context in order to insult or demean you.

So it really depends, case by case.

It's fine as long as they are close friends and also gamble/people who really enjoy gambling. I would consider it a joke but it would be different if they were people who don't gamble, I would probably get angry, but I've never been in that situation because I try to keep my gambling private. Only a few people know about it.

Fortunately, in my country, most people gamble and they post about their gambling activities. Of course, they always emphasize that gambling is just a form of entertainment, nothing more than that, and that people should only gamble with amounts of money they can afford to lose. That's why I wouldn't be upset if someone called me a gambler because I like football and sports betting. I don't see why I would need to hide it or be ashamed of it. Because I haven't stolen anything from anyone, and in my country gambling is legal, so I'm not committing a crime. I gamble with pride and without shame.

Whether it is a compliment or insult, frankly speaking I have to say that I do not care about it.
If people around me call me as gambler, I will accept it because it is who am I and I do not need to consider it as an insult of compliment.
Even if some people call me as gambler with an intention to insult, should I take it seriously? Of course not.
They are free to call or even judge me, but it is also free for me to ignore them.

Ig it's depends on whcih environment you're on. If you grew up in my environment this would be an insult. In my country where I grew up gambling often portrait as a major sins . So no matter if you're good or bad at gambling you'll be shown as a hatred eyes.

Gambling is a thing teenager's fall when they don't have any option , and a last option of  getting quick money they fall for it and even lost more . So Ig it's ideal to discourage gambling

Why are we even being insulted here, gambling isn’t a crime. If you see it as entertainment, then there’s really nothing wrong with it. Being called a gambler shouldn’t even be taken negatively, if anything it just means you enjoy entertainment and taking calculated risks.

At the end of the day, it really comes down to respect, we shouldn’t allow others to judge us so easily. If we react negatively, that’s usually when their judgment actually hits us, but if we genuinely believe gambling is just a form of entertainment, then there’s nothing to be ashamed of and no reason not to stand by it.

While gambling, no one wants to reveal themselves and tries to play as secretly as possible. In the context of my country, this is how we play gambling. Gamblers who have a lot of money gamble in casinos or gamble in a designated place. Online gambling is very popular nowadays, so in my country one gambler gambles online, so their privacy is protected. When a person gambles as a livelihood, it is correct to call them a gambler but those who gamble for fun are gamblers, but they have a different identity. They should be evaluated in that way.

In the real sense, it is actually an insult because the concept of gambling as seen by the majority of people in the society is tilted towards the negative horizon. it is the same way most persons are not comfortable when they are called an alcoholic even though they actually take alcohol and sometimes takes it above certain level. in the literal sense, if you gamble, you can be called a gambler but if people regular address you as a gambler, it suggest that you are taking your gambling to another level that is not actually healthy for you.

The people around me here view a gambler as an insult, because they always assume that you're an addict and have mostly heard bad news out of it.

Whenever I have conversations with my friends, it can be a mix of both, but for me, if someone calls me a gambler, it's probably neither of the two. I'd rather not think too deeply about what others have to say when I already know the ups and downs through gambling.

In my country, it's an insult, and I won't be proud of it.
Gambling is banned in my country. Nobody knows that I gamble online. But as you may there, there are people who gamble offline even though the gambling is banned there. These are mostly addicted gamblers who gamble daily, and when people call them gamblers, they become angry. It is one kind of insult and slang in my area. So, this is not a thing to be proud of in my country. It's like if you call someone an Animal, they will be angry at you. However, if you call them The Lion, they will take that as a compliment. But the lion was an animal too, right?

Well, this isn't supposed to be an insult or compliment, if you gamble frequently and you show interest in it you are a gambler, that's a word used to describe you because you love doing it. it's just like someone that's always playing video games and enthusiastic about it, the person would be called a gamer, this isn't a compliment or insult. But people are now beginning to have the wrong idea about this word.
