Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

You're right in noting that gambling means different things to different people. That said, i think it mostly depends on your environment. There are places where in the society, being a gambler denotes negative characteristics and people have simply come to associate gambling as a bad activity to partake in. In such societies, while getting called or known as someone who gambles is not necessarily an insult, it doesn't describe you as a "good" person either and it's definitely not something to be proud of.
Perhaps, in some other societies, it doesn't have a negative implication and people won't make negative assumptions or outright judge you for being someone who gambles.

As a gambler you don't need to feel bad or sad because someone called you a gambler, offcourse you are a gambler so you shouldn't be feeling bad because you are called a gambler which offcourse you are.
I don't see it as an  insult if you are called a gambler although I know that sometimes the tone being used and the attitude displayed by the person directly calls you a gambler can be annoying and may may you upset but it doesn't change anything so if you are a gambler then I suggest you be a proud one.

The context will determine the reaction to it. That is why context matters a lot.
However I don’t wish to be called a gambler- personally it means I do it too much and people around me have known me with it. If I gamble let it be that someone identifies me because of the game that I play the most which is slot. If you call me a slot lover, I’ll be happier than if you call me a gambler. Again, context matters.

IMO, a gambler is only going to be proud of being called as is when they are winning so much and they're able to materialized those profits.

For which when that happens, people will see him that he's a good gambler and that's a compliment that they'll like to tell you about.

On the other hand, others might don't feel the same and disliked being called as a gambler for being reckless and full of losses.

My response to this is natural, knowing about my gambling habits actually means we both engage in the same activity.

I won't have a hard feeling for anyone calling me a gambler, some level of communication is only given to friends, anything can be tolerated from friends, even if they negatively comment after some bad games. It can be both, just depends when they use it.

If his neighbors know about gambling, that person earns money from gambling or has won big. Then if the neighbors call that person a gambler, that person will not be upset or he will not mind, maybe he can avoid calling him or talk to him.
But if the same gambler loses in gambling, then he calls that person a gambler, then that person will definitely be upset and will get angry with that person. Because the gambler's behavior and mentality have changed after losing money, the gambler is happy when he earns money and his behavior changes when he loses money. And in the end, it is natural that a quarrel may arise.

Yes, he'll take that as a compliment if he's a profitable gambler.
But we know that not all gamblers are profitable in that sense and that's why others might don't like that they're called as a gambler.
Because in their mind, the people that have called them that will think of their losses and not about the good outcomes that they have got.

This is one of the reasons why I chose to gamble silently because gambling in my country reflects a negative habit. It can ruin a man's life if not played responsibly. But for us gamblers here, we have seen the advantage of gambling as long as we are doing it well and responsible enough, its just that majority of the people are still seeing gambling as a threat or a barrier towards financial progress and freedom.

Being called a gambler is an insult for me for those who are not exposed into the gambling world, but a compliment for us who are actually taking the same path with gambling.

Actually, there’s nothing to feel proud about when someone calls you a gambler. Even when I gamble, I don’t tell anyone. I usually try to gamble anonymously. Because most people in society don’t accept it well, so in my opinion, you should gamble in such a way that no one knows about it. As a result, no one will get the chance to call you a gambler.

I actually agree with this. In most cultures, gambling isn't seen as something positive and people would think that someone is reckless and into bad stuff if they find out that they gamble. It's the same thing in our country or culture because gambling is generally prohibited, but still if someone is found doing it then people will say he isn't a good or responsible person. I also personally believe that some things need to be private, and gambling is one of those things. Even if you have someone very close to you, you don't need to tell them everything, whether it's your parents, your siblings, spouse, or anyone.

I also don't share with anyone that I gamble, because I don't want to discuss something that I don't know they like or not. They might have a different view about gambling and they don't see it as something good, so it's better to keep some things to yourself. If you know that gambling is not harming you mentally or financially, then you are good to go and you should keep doing what you are doing without letting anyone know about it. I also gamble, but I don't discuss it with anyone, telling them about your wins and losses might have more of a negative effect than positive.

If the person is not trying to shame me and make mockery of me in how they are calling me, I will have no problem about it. I'm a gambler regardless and calling me without disrespecting me will not provoke me.

We have people with nonsense conduct and are troublesome and wants to annoy you  but since is what am doing for a fact ignoring their disrespect is what I can do to save myself the troubles.

 My own will be to gamble responsibly and keep off the dark edge of gambling and go deaf on what people are saying.

It all depends on the context and the tone used to call or label you. I don't think being called a gambler is derogatory, unless the person calling you a gambler wants to belittle or ridicule you with the term. But, in general, it doesn't sound like something negative.

Honestly. I am very discreet when comes to my gambling activity, so it would be very weird for someone to realize about what I do and point it out to me or mentioning it to me.

Either way, if someone called me a gambler because of something I did, I would honestly take it as a synonym of "reckless", I would not take it as a compliment, but I would not give it much important to be honest.

I would just dismiss those comments and continue to do whatever I am supposed to.

Though, I would not bee surprised there was some people who take such comments negatively, as gambling is highly stigmatized in many societies on this planet.

This depends on how people believe what a gambler is.  For me, it is not the call that is important, but what is the meaning behind that call.  If a gambler for the person who uses it means not malicious or defaming, then I do not mind.  But if that term is used to defame me, then it is an insult.  But either way, I probably don't pay attention because I know myself better than anyone else.

But honestly in my place, when someone called a person a gambler, it is a negative comment about the person and mostly thinks that the person is an addicted gambler without any future.

It all depends on how each person views it. One person might think a gambler is someone who can control their emotions, is an excellent arithmetician, and professionally manages their bankroll. Another might think a gambler is someone who has absolutely no self-control and only loses money. Moreover, when I see a gambler, I tend to assume the latter unless they demonstrate otherwise. This doesn't mean I dislike the concept, but if a gambler asks me for a loan and I don't know them well, it's best never to lend them even a dollar.

You're right, I also observe a lot, but I agree with you that if a stranger who's a gambler suddenly asks me to borrow money just to gamble, it makes me suspicious. It doesn't mean they're a bad person, but they could be struggling with an addiction and not want to admit it.  I believe that lending money should only be for something truly necessary.

To be honest, it’s a mix of feelings. In our country, being called a gambler carries a negative connotation, since gamblers are often seen as people who are broke and contribute little to the community. On the other hand, when I’m called a gambler among fellow gamblers, I feel a sense of pride because I belong to a group that understands what it means to take risks. Overall, though, I don’t think being called a gambler is a compliment—at least not here, for now.

it is neither a compliment or an insult, it is just a word used to describe what the person enjoys doing but nowadays people feel offended when others call them this particular word and it's also funny how some people see gamblers as irresponsible people, there is a difference between a gambler and an addicted gambler. like I said, it is not really a compliment or an insult. The problem with a lot of people is that they don't understand what it really means to be a gambler, they think it's about gambling irresponsibly or recklessly.

Well, I don’t feel complimented or insulted because it’s a fact that I gambler and I enjoy gambling tho. A gambler who harms other people has the right to feel insulted, because what they do harms others. If someone called me a gambler, I wouldn’t feel insulted even if they were making fun of me because gamblers only waste money and time. That said, I don’t feel like I’m that kind of gambler, although I still have a greedy side sometime.

I think if someone is called a gambler and feels complimented, then that gambler must be a professional and from what I know, there aren’t many professional gamblers.

It depends on the context. If someone was talking about me and called me a gambler who is rich I might laugh but if someone was calling me a gambler and pitying me then I'd be offended.

The name of a gambler is not a bad title that I will be ashamed of. If you gamble, anyone can call you a gambler. It is not a matter of pride or shame. But being addicted is a shame because it can cause you to face social problems and financial losses.

It should be shameful when you consider gambling as your only source of income and become addicted. Everyone will call you a gambler at a time when you consider gambling as the only way to earn a living.

Gambling for entertainment and choose a different profession according to your skills to earn money.

I use that word as fun when I'm talking to my fellow gambler, apart from that I don't call anyone a gambler if he isn't my friend. I wouldn't feel bad if someone calls me a gambler because majority of people in my area gambles and sees it as a means to get quick money without doing anything.

There are also gambling stories of people who have hit it big in gambling but got broke living in my area. So no one sees it as a crime or an abusive name.

But despite that, its still essential for one to always observe the rules and regulations of gambling in order to avoid harms that gambling brings,  especially if its misuse. Which can lead them into being addicted and might cause them more of harm than good by making them to engage into chasing after their losses and these often lead them into regretting their actions. But apart from the side effects, being called a gambler shouldn't be an issue or insult.
