It’s both hope and greed that drives them but greed is usually the stronger force when a gambler starts losing they often cling to hope because it gives a small emotional relief that things might change soon but when that hope turns into an obsession it becomes greed the constant need to win back what’s lost blinds their sense of logic. I agree with you to some point but awareness alone is not enough when it comes to gambling because gambling can be so tempting and if you are not disciplined enough we would fall prey by turning an addict. Addiction is a very crazy thing and it can render someone useless if they didn't stop or if the person is not been treated and the sad part is that it is very difficult to treat someone that has been addicted to gambling and not just gambling even alcohol addiction.
