Instead on being that scared on what happened. It would be  that much more wiser if you would be trying out to look up for some alternatives if you do really believe that you would get laid off then its wise that you should be starting to go with some side income or would be trying out to look for another job. But the main risks on here is that you do tend to switch into another job, but what if you wont be get laid off? You had just that resigned yourself into something which is unclear. The best case scenario you're describing is basically "preserve your current position long enough to survive a crisis if it comes". That's defensive doesn't really move anything forward.

Yes, get the financial prep thing done. Indeed search job as backup. But what about the work done internally? Nobody in these conversations ever talk about that. The part where you've got to actually combat the likelihood that the role you're in, the thing that you maybe built a chunk of your identity around is just going to become less necessary over time.

I saw people I know go through layoffs and the ones who struggled the most weren't the ones with the least amount of savings. They were the ones who hasn't thought about who they was outside of their job title.

There's also something worth pausing on the "what if you won't get laid off" question that you raised. That's the more interesting psychological trap.
