Can someone get addicted to a particular food? I don’t think so because it’s something I’ve never experienced or seen from anyone close or far from me before. I know there are certain things that can get you addicted like drinks with caffeine and others, but I don’t know that there is any solid food that can get you addicted also, unless if you mixed it with an addictive substance which people do.

I remember back then in school some students will mix Jollof rice with weed substance as ingredient, because of that, they were addicted to such mixture and will always practice that whenever they want to eat the food. It is the weed content that keeps bringing them back. I am also not ignoring the fact that you can get attached to a particular food because it is your favorite but it has not qualified it to the level of calling it addiction yet where you begin to feel some mental illness because you’ve not taken it.

I remember sometime ago, I got so addicted to video games that I became so obsessed with it. Even when you eat too much food, it can get you uncomfortable, there are some non alcoholic drink that doesn't make people intoxicated but when you take too much of it, you can get tipsy. The same analogy apply to gam but we don't care. We over gamble and when we see the consequences of our actions, we now act like it wasn't our fault that we gamble irresponsibly. If only we gamble with the little we can afford to lose, it's going to be a win for casino and the gambler, the gamblers might lose but it wouldn't be at the expense of addiction.

However, I feel this comparison of alcohol, drugs and gambling are different things. It seems many of us in this thread hasn't encounter a close relation that has been addicted to drug abuse. It's one of the worse thing you will want to see your family and friends doing. It's even worse than gambling addiction in my opinion. It kills dreams and everything they work for including the people around them. Never pray to see a close relation addicted to drugs.

Frankly, I don't fully understand why we should compare gambling addiction to classic drug addiction and draw conclusions based on that. It's such flawed logic. You could just as easily compare gambling addiction to a serious and incurable disease, like HIV or cancer, and say that gambling addiction is better. Or, conversely, you could compare gambling addiction to coffee addiction and say that gambling addiction is worse. Maybe the reason why the incidence of suicide among gambling addicted is superior when compared to another categories of addiction is due to the fact people feel ashamed and can't see an exit from the consequences of gambling addiction. Imagine losing huge amounts of money or patrimony, like a car or a house. Sometimes, patrimony which took an entire life to achieve. It's too aversive to have to deal with this in a way they end reaching that extreme decision.

Shame? No, but some could say shame pushed them. Psychological pressure could be it, but the most common among them is personality. Everyone has how they are able to deal with their addiction. 3-5 persons can be addicted to something, and all of them will not react the same way because they are different in terms of decision-making, so any addict, be it drugs, gambling or whatever that took their lives, it's based on the person and has nothing to do with shame in my own opinion.

I think the same way you do, but I have no real experience with it and absolutely no desire to try anything. I did have a gambling addiction, but it lasted only a short time, during which I simply understood the consequences. For me, it led me to the realization that I simply didn't see money as money, but simply as a tool to help me win. Many players have said that when they were addicted to gambling, they were willing to sell household items just to keep playing. I want to say that gambling addiction is less serious than drug addiction, but that doesn't mean it should be underestimated.

You have a point, all addictions are harmful, a friend of mine always says that even the things that are good for you can be bad when you start doing them excessively and there is a lot of sense in that. Without food no one can survive but taking it excessively leads to health issues and so does a whole lot of other things as well. Gambling might be harmless but once it becomes an habit it becomes a problem.

In advanced stages, everything will threaten your well-being, both drugs and gambling will demand money. If gambling deprives you of money, drugs will further damage your health, making recovery even more difficult. I categorically oppose drugs, but I admit that gambling can be harmless if you're a responsible player, understand how things work, and are disciplined enough to not lose more than you can afford for fun.

You're right about that but it depends, some gambling addict can chose to disguise and you hardly find out unless they share it with you and surely most addicted gamblers easily show up that's those set of gamblers that lack discipline, well. Just like you said of course is their life so they have every right to live it however they like but we shouldn't stop advising them especially when we see that they need it because some addicted gamblers find it very hard to talk to people about how they feel but you as a friend or relative/neighbor once you see them acting unusual the best thing you could do to help them in that current situation is to advice them because it's obvious they need it.

That makes a lot of sense, people only think that  the only things that is addictive is gambling and drugs. But while things are highly addictive due to the high level of dopamine rush that comes with these both, there are also several things people can get addicted to if done excessively, that’s why people need discipline and moderation in whatever they do because that’s the only way they can avoid abusing and even getting addicted to something, whether drug, gambling, food, alcohol and what have you.
