Marketing affordable goods by emphasizing the need is still effective; but for luxury goods, you need a different approach. In developing countries, more people buy Apple products simply to take beautiful photos in front of the mirror. This means you won't market the iPhone for its technology or quality, because people don't really care about that.

Going by all that you mentioned, a pen may not particularly fit sometimes but other products can fit so well. I personally would not want to ask someone to sell a pen to me because it is becoming almost a cliche used by too many employers and now people know almost the best answer to give at everytime. The art of marketing has got some much to it beyond just selling to some one who has no need of that which you are selling to them, there are people who are so strong willed you just can take them off their stance, such person will need that you do even more work to get them or leave them alone, that's where emotional intelligence comes in as a marketer, there are many others too that can and will be considered  too.

More than doing all the talking, just let your product speak for you because that is the real marketing that you have got there. with an high rate of competition in the business space that is as a result of the large population of people that are in similar line of business, you just have to ensure that your marketing skill is as good as possible and that your product is speaking for you.

social media has made marketing easier now than ever such that even if your product is not all that good, you can easily send a narrative that suggest that it is of a certain quality and by that way, you get to reach a high audience and at the same time, make an higher sales.

Employers want to be impressed by asking you one thing: sell me this pen.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?

From what I used to know when I worked in marketing, there is no art behind it. All you do is collect data, follow the trends the data shows you and try to see what else sticks. If you find something better then you adopt it into your marketing strategy and keep going until you have reached the KPI's you have and then you just keep working from there and try to do better, all while analyzing the data.

In the end, no matter how good your marketing is, you will not make any money from your product/service unless there is a demand for that product/service. You might make less money than the guy with a good product and almost no marketing.

You have a point here, i mean when people look at marketers they just be like you should be able to sell anything i give, but then I would argue just like you that the value of the product to the end user is very important. It would just make it a lot better for the marketing team if the product solves an actual problem and that is a major discussion we need to have more often. Marketing can amplify value but it cannot manufacture it where it doesn’t exist and also the easier it is to communicate real impact of the product, the stronger and more sustainable the results will be.

I'm no expert with marketing, and if I get asked these kind of questions during interview, I honestly don’t know how to impress them. But marketing is indeed one of the main factor needed to prioritize in order to make sales and profit. Regardless of what product or service you offer, you’ll earn enough profit if you know how to market what you offer. As a consumer, marketing really plays a big role on how you can convince people to buy your product. I’ve seen how people market their products either online or in person, and it really amazes me at some people who have such great marketing skills.

So selling pen in modern area not selling stationery but selling narative of status, scarcity, identity, lifestyle and self improvement culture. From you're opinion, I think you're rational consumer like me and we are minority in these modern world, many people has high pressure to be acceptable by community, thirst for recognition, wanting to be seen as success person, and has big fear of being seen left behind and being seen as a fail person. I thing modern marketing targeting these people. From these phenomena we understand that modern marketing not a solution for problem like previous era but actually its creating new needs with spreading anxiety or insecure feeling  first after that they come with solution. This is a form of adaptation for fast changing lifestyle era where in short socal media cycle, trend very fast moving which giving rise unrelevan culture. So this kind of lifesty also making desire never grow enough. This economic structure make consumption growing bigger to keep wheel of industry turning. The role of marketing is find creative proper narative story to sellanything and  which such practice,  the art of marketing contributed to credit based consumption, inflation especially lifestyle, and symbolic inequality.
