As a gambler who much do you think is right for gambling per week?

Had discussion with friends over the weekend and one of them said he do allocates about 40 percent of his monthly salary to gambling within the month, and when that amount finishes he wouldn't mind refilling it again, provided that he is catching the cruise and having fun he doesn't mind any amount he is spending to gamble.
To me: I just quietly breathe down, and looked at him a kind of annoying looks like, if he truly knows what he is saying. I told him that such amount is too huge to allocate for his gambling, I asked? How much do you saved per month and how much do you spend or for your up keep? He said " he barely saved up money" that he do spend out before the month ends. This made me to understand that he is actually addicted but he seems not to noticed yet and even when I tried to draw him closer to know that he is already an addicted gambler he said he knows what he is doing.

I want to know if it was you what would you do to him, and how much do you think he should be allocating to gamble every week or month? Let discusse, know that there are lot of addiction thread so we should try as much as possible not to make a repetitive comment.

If someone still go for 5% and the person is not going beyond it, that is better but not still the best. The recommended percentage of money that people should use to gamble in a way that they will not be affected financially if they are earning enough amount of money is 1% and it should not be more than 1% of the person's income.

Spending 40% from once salary is not encouraging in anyway and that is a deep sign of irresponsibility and addiction in gambling, within our various environment, we can see how confused some gamblers can be, they don't look good, they don't properly take care of their family not to talk of helping other people.
To me, since he is your friend and as a good friend you are, do not live him alone, do all you can to help him out ,because he is going astray, his hard earned money that is supposed to be useful for him is being wasted because of wrong gambling decision

Well, if your story is indeed true, then I seriously doubt the person in question have any idea what he or she is saying, why? Because first of all, I know that you are a Nigerian and I am a Nigerian too, we both understand how bad the economy is right now and how expensive it is to be alive and keep being alive in a country like this one, no body in their right senses will be spending 40% of their monthly income on gambling and not go into serious dept.

Well except the person in question is still a bachelor who doesn't have any body or relation they are taking care of, or also doesn't have a girlfriend, that is, what he earns in the month is only for himself alone, if this is the case, then it's possible but I doubt if he himself can even be affording good clothes to wear and good food to eat since gambling is eating the most part of his monthly salary.
Saying this because putting 40% of your monthly salary into gambling in this type of economy is like putting 80% to 85% of your salary into gambling, you are left with nothing for your upkeep.

I have tried to Induced that to him to know that what is doing actually wrong but he seems not to pay heed to what I am telling himself, therefore I don't know what to do him so that he would understand that he is already addicted to gambling. The worst thing is that when gambler are getting addicted or are already addicted they don't know because to them they would feels that they are gambling normal without knowing that they are addicted, since he doesn't know and accept the fact that he is already addicted to gambling.

Everyone has a different tolerance for losing money. 40% sounds big, and it is, to me, but that's the amount he can afford to lose unless you hear about bad things he's done because of gambling.

My allocation is 10%-20%. Sometimes I spend more than that, but usually because I have more free time. If I'm too busy with other things, I don't even spend what I've allocated.

Either in percentage or by rate, we are to gamble with any amount we can afford to lose, also, if you're a salary earner, I don't think we need to preach this much to you because you already know what you are earning and how other bills are there with it for you before the month ends, so it is left at your discretion to either plan well and manage your income and be responsible or use most vital part of it for gambling and end up being in reproach, any decision will make will be affected by us he depositively or negatively, we all know what is good for us to do, but when we play negligence, such is going to put us in trouble and Hunt back at us later.

I don't have a fixed percentage that I deposit because I keep my bankroll for a long time in sports

I dont have fixed amount to spend in gambling because I will always use my income for everything I have to pay first then I will start to calculate on how much to spend based on the rest of my income.
Lets say my income in a month is $1000, with this amount I have to pay many things just like most other people lets say $600 means that I have $400 left.
How much I will spend to gamble? no more than 50% of the rest ($400) so the max amount I can spend is $200 for a month.
Since your question is per week then I can say that I can spend this amount ($200) for a week only or for a few weeks or even for the whole month.

Nothing. I wouldn't tell him anything about it. When it comes to money matters, it is best not to say anything to others. The only exception is if they ask you, and even then it is not worth it in most cases. Obviously, 40% is outrageous for someone who says they don't save, but trying to give them advice on the matter doesn't seem likely to end well.

That 40% is way too much to spend in gambling in a month, assuming the guy is earning $10k monthly and he is gambling with more than 40% during some months, that's a crazy amount to spend in gambling meanwhile there are other things to do with money. In my opinion, 10% is more than enough to use in gambling for a month, at most, the person can spend 20%.

If I were you, I will advice the person to reduce the amount of money they are spending in gambling unless they are earning up $30k or more as their monthly income, meaning that even if they spend up to 40% in gambling, they still have enough money to invest.

No matter how you approach your friend, the bitter truth is, you cannot change someone who is not ready to change or has been addicted, in the end what can change your friend's mindset is to experience his own bitter experience of gambling. And regarding the allocation, this will depend on each person's monthly income, but what is clear is that the perfect allocation is after all the main priorities are fulfilled, after all that is done then we can consider how much should be allocated to our gambling, but even then it still has to be in a small portion, after all gambling is just entertainment.

I do agree that how much we spend on gambling per week is subjective and depends on how much we earn. But 40% is highly risky IMO.
As humans, we have other important needs that will take up to 50% of our salary. The only reason that can justify this act is if the person is not married and if he has low responsibility, but just himself to care for. 20% is more appreciated to spend on gambling per week.

There is no universal amount of money that's specific or right for gambling because everyone's capabilities or financial level isn't the same, the right answer to your question is for players to ganble according to their means. You know how much you earn on a monthly or weekly basis, no one should make the rules for you, this is something that is actually personal. stake an amount you can afford to lose.

If our income is high, then even 10% is a significant amount and more than enough. I think people who use 40% of their income for gambling are addicted.

40% seems a lot, especially if he is barely saving up anything. I would suggest 1% to 5% only or more plainly, none at all. Your friend (if by any chance this story is true), is spending too much on his gambling habits, which quite frankly, already sounds like an addiction, or at the very least, heading in that path. Sooner or later, when he eventually becomes a compulsive gambler and spends more than what he earns, he will have a hard time in life.
I would suggest you find someone to counsel him on how to properly handle his finances before it ruins him.

40% is outrageous and this shows how addictive he could be as anyone who is using about 40 percent to gamble is actually bad. As a reasonable gambler or responsible gambler should be at least using about 1-5% to gamble, this could be monthly or weekly at least it helps to regulate how much amount you do spend while gambling and you can also give an account to how much you have used to gamble and lose them. To me, I would advise you to tell your friends to visit a specialist who will then advised him on amount to be using to gamble.

From 100% income, 50% should go to living expenses & the other 50% goes back to our strategy, whether 20% goes to savings, another 20% goes to investments & the remaining 10% is allocated for gambling. I myself don't have limit, but every month I will not spend more than 25% of my income just for gambling.

Keeping it limited to 10% of the salary is what I would prefer. Hourly 2-4hours/week should be max. But these numbers are highly variable because those who are into sports betting might spend a lot of time watching the games but will bet only once during the entire time.

40% is high, in my opinion. I hope this friend of yours is able to win something big in order to sustain for long, because it would not be sustainable in the long run, I wonder how long it has been like this for them?
