Had discussion with friends over the weekend and one of them said he do allocates about 40 percent of his monthly salary to gambling within the month, and when that amount finishes he wouldn't mind refilling it again, provided that he is catching the cruise and having fun he doesn't mind any amount he is spending to gamble.

First of all, you have to tell us in figure how much the alleged gambler is spend per month, this way we can know how exactly to advice them, but for me, why will you top up your balance when you have already exusted your weekly budget for gambling, to me such actions have moved you away from being a decipline and responsible gambler already.
When you start gambling above you budget, you should know that indicates chasing your loses and that is a bad approach to gambling.

You did not mention your friend's status, so he can allocate 40% of a month's salary. If he is a single bachelor, I think it's fine with him, as he has no obligation to anyone but himself.

I don't think I can allocate 40% of my monthly salary to my status as a family man. I have so many obligation and my salary is not that huge to allocate more than 10%.

I depend on my sideline, as my whole salary goes to my family's needs. As they say, only invest with money you can afford to lose, and it's even truer if you have a family.

First, accept that he might not listen to you, even if you keep on telling or hinting to him that he is already a gambling addict. Second, many gambling addicts won't accept it. It's a fact, and as long as they have money, they won't think about themselves as a gambling addict.
Lastly, most of them do not want any advice from anyone, and even if we tell you what percentage of their monthly salary a person should spend on gambling, and you pass it to them, they might just ignore you. Worst, he might even get angry with you and cut your friendship.

But to answer the question. I only use 10 percent of my monthly salary, and that's it. I have 2 kids who are going to school, and I have responsibilities, that's why I cannot put a higher amount just for my bad habit.

First off, I'd like to say that your friend is doing a good job spending only 40% of his income and not 100%. It means he can control himself. The next step is to realise that 40% is too much. Well, it depends on how he lives. If he lives in parents' house never spending on rent or food, and can spend the $500 he makes per month entirely on himself, then maybe even 40% is not that bad. Just don't go over that, and think on spending on gambling not more than 10% when you have someone to care about.

40% is too much for a month which it would be that get into your monthly salary not unless if  you do have other source of income or you arent that totally relying with your work salary but if we do speak about fully reliant on it and spending almost half of it on gambling then you are just that basically doing suicide and its better to stop as early as you could rather than on making yourself thatb eing delusional and thinking that you can make money with gambling. Gambling isnt bad on any sense, it is what a person is doing and on the effects that it would have at the time that you do become that careless and irresponsibe with the actions or on how you do view on it. There's always cons whenever you do deal up with something specially that it would be losing up that much money. Gambling per week whether the duration or the amount then it would vary because each person does have that different capabilty and tolerance on things.

In my opinion, spending up to 40% of your monthly salary for gambling is not really good ideas, stop gambling by using your primary fund but if you don't have side job spent up under 10% your salary for gambling. Almost half your salary spending for gambling if want to allocate until 40% how you can manage well with 60% salary left must be enough for one month, despite has possibility winning in your gambling but can't guarantee bring 40% your capital for gambling will earn much.
I fully saving my salary but for gambling fund allocate from my side job indeed flexible some time allocate around $20 to $30 every week but overall one month I only spent under $150 for gambling, not matter if win up to $500 my monthly spending for gambling under $150.

Any amount below 10% is okay, but 40%, which is not even fixed for him, is way too much no matter how small or high his earnings are. The best I can do for him after trying to talk him out of it is involve his family member; maybe if they try to talk to him, it might work. I can't be rolling around with someone who is gambling that way with his financial life affected; I will be seen as one who is encouraging him to do more.

Well, if your story is indeed true, then I seriously doubt the person in question have any idea what he or she is saying, why? Because first of all, I know that you are a Nigerian and I am a Nigerian too, we both understand how bad the economy is right now and how expensive it is to be alive and keep being alive in a country like this one, no body in their right senses will be spending 40% of their monthly income on gambling and not go into serious dept.

Well except the person in question is still a bachelor who doesn't have any body or relation they are taking care of, or also doesn't have a girlfriend, that is, what he earns in the month is only for himself alone, if this is the case, then it's possible but I doubt if he himself can even be affording good clothes to wear and good food to eat since gambling is eating the most part of his monthly salary.
Saying this because putting 40% of your monthly salary into gambling in this type of economy is like putting 80% to 85% of your salary into gambling, you are left with nothing for your upkeep.

That's what addiction can make you do. I have seen someone that got paid and went straight to the casino and ended his pay in one session. Let's gamble responsible and avoid addiction if not, you will regret it. OP friend is addicted and exhaust his salary before the month runs out.

A lot of people allocate as low as 2% of their income to gambling so that they will not feel bad incase they lose the money. Their interest is not to win all the time but they target big multipliers so that one win can cover all possible losses they might have incurred and still put them in nice profits. My suggestion is that anything below 10% is fine to be allocated to gambling and the lower the percentage, the easier it would be to bear losses when they come.

Spending 40% of salary only on gambling seems like a nonsensical decision to me, because it's too much money for anyone. It is not good to spend 30% of your income in gamble talk more of 40%, what's the difference between 40% and 50% of his income? That is probably half of his salary he is spending on gambling per month. You should try and give him more of advice, but if he doesn't listen you back off. Firstly I think that your friend is either very young and don't have any serious responsibilities or his income is very huge that when he removes 40% from it to gamble he will still have enough leftover to take care of his needs. I think using up to 40% of your salary to gamble is irresponsible because gambling is not a business that you have guarantee to make profit, winning is by luck and if you lose your money is gone. If somebody with your friend's mentality wins I'm sure that he will use most of it to chase for more wins which he will likely lose everything back to the casino. Although gambling is basically on individual sources of income, so for that reason i always set a target on the particular amount that i will spend on gambling a week and which $5,000 and once i have exhausted such amount for the week i due take a break and wait for the next week to come because i can't afford to stake with the amount of money that i can't afford to lose if incase i don't win in that particular week, and i also believe that setting of target weekly on the amount you should be spending will help so many from not being so addicted to gambling too.

We really can't control what he wants to do on his hard earned money and we are not into the position to tell him what to do. Most of the people that is addicted are not yet aware that they are addicted to gambling and most of them deny that they are addicted and claim that they are still in control, where in fact they are slowly getting eaten by addiction. Personally, there is right amount on what you should allocate in your gambling activity, as long as you have savings, paying bills and met all other needs and the money you're playing with (no matter the amount) is just excess money, I don't see any problems with it.

Op, one thing you should know is that addiction is always at different levels and perhaps this friend is still at the early stage of it and somehow he or she can be talked out or convinced to stop using 40 percent of his or her salary to gamble because that's how addiction comes, this your friend might be feeling he is having fun and entertainment without knowing what he doing to himself. 40% is insane, no matter what's the salary is. I am hoping he doesn't have any real responsibilities that he is gambling to provide or not with.

I would be interested to ask how much he spends to rent, groceries and other living expenses, gas and travelling, medical expenses, savings, emergency fund, and just anything else.

Imho answer depends on where you are at life and what are your goals, but no matter what they are, 40% is just a self-destructive behavior. Personally it depends on my situation and if i have buffer money or not, but generally it's around 0.5% to 1% of my income. But i have responsibilities and need to keep risky expenses in minimum.

From 1 to 10% is an excellent indicator, in my opinion, because it means we're not too dependent on the game and it won't affect us no matter the outcome, even if we quickly lose everything. It's also important to understand that continuing to play past your limit is the moment we've determined that the game has an impact on us. This is a reason to consider changing this, although it won't be easy. For example, whenever I feel the urge to continue, I immediately recall the stories of dozens of my friends and acquaintances who, after deciding to continue playing, lost all the money they could get their hands on.
