Same talking point... again. Every single cycle, bitcoin's going up and they trot out the same story. 2017 it was 'more energy than Ireland', 2021 it was 'more than Argentina'. It's just the story they need because they can't talk about the real one - how the current system is a giant, centralized energy drain itself. Honestly from my seat, the real story they always ignore is mining adapting to use wasted and stranded energy. That's the disruptive part. It's not just consumption; it's creating a global buyer for energy that'd otherwise be flared or dumped, which changes the whole economics of power generation. But that's a second-order effect... doesn't fit the simple 'Bitcoin bad' headline they need to run. The framing's wrong on purpose.

That's FUD. Never believe anything that claims Bitcoin consumes more energy and is polluting the environment. There are many industries in the world that use far more energy than Bitcoin, and they don't receive the same level of negative attention as Bitcoin. So, that claim is completely exaggerated and designed to belittle Bitcoin. Even Bitcoin mining has become greener, with over 52% of the network now powered by renewable energy sources, and the mining industry's efficiency is also improving. You can read about it in this article: https://uabonline.org/english-news/why-bitcoin-is-getting-greener-renewables-power-52-of-mining/

Electrical Energy. I'm too lazy to talk on this so would refer you to a thread by fillippone Debunking the "Bitcoin is an environmental disaster" argument If you really curious about the relationship Bitcoin shares with its environment You can check out the thread above.

Please can someone enlighten me on the type of energy bitcoin is using, i overheard someone saying bitcoin consumes lots of energy and its not that safe for the living environment.
The energy consumption of Bitcoin mining is a result of the complex process involved in creating cryptocurrencies, which requires specialised machines and a significant amount of computational power.
Bitcoin’s energy-intensive Proof of Work (PoW) process involves solving complex mathematical problems to validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. This requires a significant amount of computational power, which in turn requires a substantial amount of electricity. Additionally, the decentralised nature of Bitcoin mining means that multiple miners compete to solve these problems, leading to higher energy consumption. As more miners join the network and the difficulty of the problems increases, the energy consumption of Bitcoin also increases.
There’s no point of denying that bitcoin does take up huge amounts of energy. Instead of denying, there are various ways being developed to reduce that consumption of energy. So it’s greener.

It consumes electricity. A lot of it too. It is however useful pollution considering it empowers a fully Free financial system particularly compared to other industries such as fashion. Or tech. See how much waste China is producing. Open Temu, almost every thing you see there is going to become waste sooner or later after they break down or stay unused due to very low quality. If there is some thing to attack, it should be those first. If these lower their pollution to a level below Bitcoin then it may be time to focus more on making Bitcoin more green too. Until then it is a closed subject. At least for me.

Nothing to be afraid of; you are a newbie, and you need to learn more about how Bitcoin actually works. Hence, you are in the right place if you really want to learn about Bitcoin. It's true Bitcoin consumes some power for mining, but this isn't the biggest power consumption at all. A lot of industry consume more power than Bitcoin mining. Also miners have been trying to use renewable power sources, which is more convenient for the environment. Rather than focusing on Bitcoin energy, you may think to accumulate Bitcoin. Power consumption isn't the biggest issue for Bitcoin; miners are handling this in their way. Bitcoin isn't harmful for the environment; we have to use power for daily life, and similarly, Bitcoin is doing so.

That's a good thing you answered As of now, BTC doesn't exceed what's considered usual energy usage for the environment. If anything, it does better things for the envo and other players at this board bring much more harm to it than BTC.

Bitcoin is using Proof of Work, though may be energy demanding because of the requirement needed in setting up a mining rig, however, we must make it clear that it is not environmental unfriendly, because its entire mining process places no harm to the environment the way other natural resources do while mining them, i will add this to you to read this topic that have already been discussed about how bitcoin mining is environmentally safe. debunking bitcoin energy in mining bitcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5325350.msg56613804#msg56613804

The kind of energies used are likely diverse, and if they were that bad on the environment, especially based on observable longterm and short-term effects, responsible governments wouldn't allow companies that produce the energies. To understand this more clearly, research the places Bitcoin mining is more concentrated and find out about the kind of environmental issues the places experience that are connected to the mining. The results have to be consistent with mining activities and environments issues.
Now, note that there are numerous activities that involve certain energies, and have observable direct shortterm/longterm consequences on living things, none of them, as far as I can tell, are linked to Bitcoin mining. Example of such environment activities, (1) pollution from inconsistent or random noises(often loud noises) that violate other people's spaces (sound energy), (2) infusing plants, animals, foods, water with toxic chemicals (chemical energy), (3) lying, cheating, stealing, killing, hating, and other evil done by people (dark energy), etc. This are the most significant activities with major observable consequences on the environments. Strange as this may sound, they are major reasons for cancers, diseases, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, drought, etc. If the world completely stops all these evil without stopping Bitcoin mining, the environment issues will most likely stop or drastically reduce, but if Bitcoin mining is completely stopped while the evil continues, the environment issues will definitely continue possibly in an incremental level. The reason this is so, is due to the fact that the world and living things are protected by shields or bubbles that can swell up and become weakened when evil things, like those mentioned above, affect them. It's like how yeast swells a dough/bread.. When they weaken, the environments/weather become unstable.
Now, there are rules or laws that were given to humans in the past that must be kept in other to prevent the shield from weakening. If you avoid doing the evil mention above, you'll be obeying the rules. And the rules do not include the kind of energies used by Bitcoin, though we have to be careful not to abuse our environment with harmful energies.

Yes for sure it really does consume a lot of energy to keeping the system flowing because the system involves proof of work mechanism. Therefore adequate power supply is needed. if you know how mining works you will understand why power supply is needed. as miners are using their various computers to solve complex mathematical problems equations or let say puzzle to confirm and validate transactions, adequate power supply is needed to keep the process working. As for its safety or causing pollution to the environment it’s entirely depends on the source of your energy as various form of energy have there various kind of pollution but I think It will be a clean energy. if only renewable energy source is being used.

There is no denying that Bitcoin mining uses energy. Just like other industries, factories, and manufacturing plants use energy. We use energy in most of our daily lives and put pressure on the environment, since our profits are more than our losses, we don't talk about it.
The same is true for Bitcoin, like other industries, Bitcoin uses energy and puts pressure on the environment, but we get more benefits than that. Some Bitcoin opponents use this opportunity to spread negative propaganda about Bitcoin. They ignore that their homes have ACs running, TVs running, lights running, and many other energy-consuming electrical devices running. They are lazy to talk about it, so we should also be lazy in this regard.

Yeah, bitcoin mining consumes a high amount of electrical energy which is required by many computers to solve mathematical algorithms but it is a fallacy to say that it is harmful to the environment. Those enemies of bitcoin will always look for ways to create a narrative that emissions from bitcoin mining is disastrous but do not listen to them. For the fact that it uses high amount of electricity does not mean that it causes a catastrophe to the environment.

This has been discussed many times. Bitcoin mining does indeed use huge amount of electrical energy but people even if it does use high amount so there should be something that is related to consumption of electrical energy which is heat but people find a way to use it especially in cold areas like being used to warm a place and even used it to heat water. Anyway, you shouldn't worry about it as it is not rhe only one that uses a lot of energy compared to other industries that uses a lot more energy.

However there are other fields in our economy that waste more energy that can be exploited in other sectors, bitcoin is a really big consumter of energy of all kinds. We have to deal with this as fact and not just ignore it because it's used in propaganda against bitcoin. For propaganda club, would you tell who consume more energy, bitcoin mining farms and production arms factories? This is your weak reason.

The truth is that you can use any form of energy in your mining what is needed is a constant power supply which is needed to keep your mining machines functional. To me I just see news about this as just unfortunate because the fact is that the world has paid a lip service to environmental concerns and safety especially as it concerns emotions of gases from gas flaring and to the use of crude oil and other unsafe energy sources in the world. The big countries who are the once talking about environmental concern are the once who are doing the worst so you can't single out Bitcoin mining as not been safe to the environment. Before anyone should call out Bitcoin the world should come to a concesus on the use of unsafe energy sources and talk about renewable energy.

It is propaganda cause consuming energy does not mean it is problematic to the environment. It is correct that bitcoin mining is a big consumer of energy globally but this is beneficial cause it disposes of energy that needs to be put somewhere. The heat generated fro mining can be brought up as an environmental issue but that is not still at a scale be a problem. - Jay -
