Good question. I would first check those users for whose posts OP has sent several merits. If you want to help everyone, give 1 merit each. But yes, it's not surprising that all these users will turn out to be from Nigeria, but why, OP? Are you desperately promoting your local section, yet you're asking users from the international section to check your posts? I think that your 120-day merits indicators speak for themselves, and I agree with the one who said that it is not worth imposing recognition, since what is "beautiful" is visible to everyone without drawing attention to it. I hope you understand what I'm talking about.

We shouldn't have to promote meritable content - it should be recognized naturally.  

It would be great if many of those who regularly ask for attention regarding the distribution of merits heard this.

PM isn't going to work for me at the moment but I'll be reopening this [Request] Report Unmerited Good Posts Here for another batch of submissions very soon. I would rather that you go over your posts and highlight the ones where you believe you have put in a lot of effort and do not receive enough support. It saves me time to attend to others.

As a staff member, can you influence Theymos to change the smerit distribution?  We shouldn't have to promote meritable content - it should be recognized naturally.   I merit posts in PD without being a source, but most users won't receive the smerit I do.  They should, since merit is subject to individual opinion and not the administrators alone.

It's only a title, and I can't influence theymos's judgments. If you have a better proposal/modifications, you take it up to Meta and let the community delibrate on it, or you PM it to theymos. This is how the forum has been operating from its inception.

I wouldn't call it "desperation to promote their local board." Op is a merit source allocated to support the Naija local board, thus having numerous Nigerians in their merit history is justified. If anything, OP is doing an excellent job.

I mean Theymos.  He's already in charge - OgNasty hates him for getting caught and he has the respect of the forum.  He should remain as a neutral administrator and stop playing favorites with the tools required to rank up. 

What did you have in mind? Spreading it out to more members is far more conducive than to have it concentrated in the hands of a number of un-elected members that choose to merit posts they want.

My goal is the same as yours - spread smerit out to the senior active members.  I don't care how he does it but there must be a reason he isn't doing it.   It would be less work for him and it would be fair.

Well, I think it is safe to assume that virtually all of those that are currently merit source will probably disagree because they already have something that others do not (and they probably would not want to let it go) and there is no incentive for them to agree to a different system. Regardless of that, having a two-tier system (where there are some members instated as merit source and others that are not) is not the way forward.

Maybe theymos is not changing the merit system because he feels it is adequate and there is no need to change it or maybe he thinks there is room to change it but at a later date. it would be good to understand his opinions on this.

I acknowledge that not nearly enough people are banned for low-quality posts. The fundamental issue is that we don't want to ban someone just for posting one or two stupid posts, since that's subjective and might just be due to the person having weird opinions or being a poor writer. So to evaluate a user properly, we really want to be reading a sampling of 20-40 of their posts. But doing this sort of evaluation (i.e. reading through hundreds of mediocre-to-bad posts) is really soul-sucking, so nobody wants to do it very much. I'm still thinking about ways to resolve this issue, possibly involving rejiggering how merit works.

The system in unfair as it creates a two-tier class and that creates a division. One class is deemed worthy to become merit source whereas the other are not.

I don't think I've ever seen someone be denied a merit source position that asked for it but I can't say I worry about such things to pay attention either.  Are there instances of deserving people getting denied a merit source application on the grounds that they are unworthy to become a merit source?  I agree the way it is currently distributed is a bit wonky, but what is a better solution?

Sincerely speaking I noticed those who are active on the gambling section not to receive enough Merits since they are being characterized as people who are spamming, and even as that I can still assure you that there are quality post that still needs to be merited.
I have took my time to study those that post at the gambling section, there Merits counts and scores are usually low, except for those that post on technical section.

Yup, i also feel the same and hardly seen any merited post on the gambling discussion section. I am usually active on the sports discussion threads there, and there you get some valuable discussions and insights into the matches being played and possibly a chance of choosing, wisely to bet on the matches after getting the point of view of the people. Yeah the spams post too exists and that is in every section of the forum.

But that is what it is, if you have love for the sports, you will continue to contribute to those sections, even if we're not getting merited there.

Yes, there are pending ones; some are pending/delayed not because they do not deserve to be one, but for a common reason: if you apply for a board with a sufficient merit source, your chances of acceptance are slim. theymos focuses on boards lacking merits, rather than the reputation of those who applied.
