I can tell you how shocked I was when I came by the user Scamvirus… I had to look into the user and even sent a few messages through for a convo but, the user is apparently a good guy and doing well by the forum.

There are some differences in the username of the account that can easily be distinguished as two different people. There are many who create accounts with similar names to other reputed members for various purposes, which can confuse other members. And the creation of such a situation actually complicates the matter and confuses that reputed member as well. And that's why if someone later wants to create an account using a similar name, it should definitely be blocked if it's a very close name so that more complicated situations don't arise in the future.

I believe there's no such need because all reputed members of the forum are known for their number of merits and the ones who create similar name account won't be able to gain any merits and thus the accounts won't be of any use for anyone.

Oh so it's actually right. I tried both (Satoshi, Theymos), and I got an error saying it contains, 'reserved username', I couldn't be bothered to try other combinations (except  'satosh!' — which went through and as mentioned earlier) but I believe it's coded as simple as if it's contain basically these raw words as in 'theymos' and 'satoshi' — it won't let you proceed.

I don't think this is effective thing, since anyone can create something any combination like ťheym0ś or śąt0sh1.
Same argument can be said for email addresses, yet we have near limitless combination of email addresses, and there is no confusion.
It's trivial to check member profile in forum to know if that is real account or not.

There are high rank reputed members of this forum, who have similar names to them, and no one will get any benefit by creating an account except creating confusion. I also think that by creating an account matching the name of a user, no one will get any extra benefit. For this, new users will also have to think about how they will popularize themselves in this forum with their own different name without copying anyone.

I think making a username similar should be unacceptable, because it can be misused. If it is left and the account grows, wouldn't any of us think it was an alternate account of the imitated username.

After all, to create a username there are many sentences if you just want to make a username for example "Allower" or even something that cannot be read even if it is "xxxprt". Isn't that more acceptable than having to imitate someone else's username.
Even if it doesn't have any added benefits like you say, at least not everyone thinks it's an alternative account.

This is never going to work because who defines what the "protected" usernames are? DT? A committee? The staff? It would unnecessarily aggrevate a lot of people, and it would be difficult to enforce in practice.

Hmm, this sounds interesting but I'm not sure I understand the suggestion fully. We do already have an option in the extension to show the BPIP recognition rank under the username for each post/message, it just doesn't do any color coding. This obviously wouldn't help a new message being sent to a user (in your example earlier), or a new post/reply (action=post)... those names all sit inside of text fields with no way to apply color coding effectively, especially if factoring multiple recipients (in messages).

Perhaps you wrote about the account LoyceValenzuela and why you ended with LoyceV somewhere else.

For privacy reasons, I used a random generator to create a name: Loyce Valenzuela! I only found out it's a girl's name much later, but by then it had grown on me already. "Valenzuela" rolls off the tongue nicely. I never imagined I'd still be using the same name 5 years later.

Obviously, my account is legendary and this new one would be lower in rank, but this is a detail that could sometimes go unnoticed.

Any patent and registration system in the world blocks similar names, so why should it be different here?

I am not saying to block registration, but rather that accounts like this should be banned as soon as they are identified, or can you tell me what the noble purpose is of an account that is visually and semantically identical to the original?

The acccount would need to earn 100 Merit and 120 Activity to get an avatar, and much more Merit to be able to use the same signature. Imposters aren't going to put that much effort into an account that can be banned at any moment, they're usually just trolling or looking for a quick scam.
Back in the days, when users started having the same signature and avatar I had, I sometimes thought: "I didn't write that", while in fact it wasn't my account. It turns out I didn't even look at the username.

There's a slight difference between "l", "1" and "I", but it's easy to overlook.

When going through some red tagged account I saw this account, and I have also seen familiar accounts that registered with similar names of old members in this forum, and I’m sure other members have seen things like this.
To be honest the forum should be programmed or set in a way that anyone who is trying to register new account in this forum and the name he or she wants to use is similar to already existing name in the forum, the registration should not go through.
Some people are registering with similar names of old members for scam purposes. Some of you will say red tagging them is just okay but let remember that before we may discover them they may have already achieved their purpose. Same name registration is not allowed, same thing should also go for similar names, especially like the example above.

I think the name the user registered with is also the reason why he or she got those negative tags, and let me say that there is no way a user will register with the same username as some old member here and some users won't notice until such a user have ended up scamming someone here, it's so so impossible except the person that got scammed is a very foolish person to not have carried a small research before committing funds to an unknown person..

First thing to note is that a newbie without the copper member tag will hardly provide a service on this forum and users pick interest in such a service, so when a newbie claims to provide a service here, other user often treat such a user as a scammer until confirmed otherwise.

So whether the forum banned new intending forum users from registering with similar usernames as some one who already exists on this forum or not, no user coming in here with intention to carry out a scam ever succeeds, and even using a username similar to an already existing account give the user away easily too.

I believe similar names should not be allowed because it already causing a lot of confusion right now in the forum, many people are creating accounts and this accounts are similar to reputable members account name in this forum and surely they will use it to scam some set of people especially those that are still new to this forum and so I support the OP that similar name registration should not be allowed in this forum, currently I’m sure some people has been scammed using this similar name format. Everyone should be careful and don’t accept any deal in private.

It should not and all other account names should not be banned simply and only because of the names. Days ago, two accounts with names similar to two signature campaign managers were nuked. I don't look details but assume there is no scam activities from them, their accounts should be fine. It's my opinion, as we can not assume that any user with any name was created just for scam at all.

Before they do any scam, they are naive, and it's unfair to ban them or nuke them.

If ban, nuke is applied too simple like this, BitBakerr1 accounts should have been banned already, while it was not banned.

you have made your point clear and I think this is where the problem is, I don’t even know some people already used similar name i also used and people are still creating similar names like mine since I created mine.
I never said anyone should be banned for similar names i was just saying it should not be allowed anymore since it’s already causing confusion.
I will go with what notocactus said, anyone who registered similar name with someone in other to use it to scam members in the forum should be ban with evidence of scam attempt, I think it’s better this way.
