In the past, they called it bartering. A human being must work their ass so that they can exchange something. Why? Because he is so tired of eating the same meat, and he wants something else to change his palate. If it's boar every day, I want to taste goat someday. Something like that.
It's not free. An exchange happens because both parties have agreed that they want the same thing. A change in what they eat. The same goes for happening now. You invest in something and feel like it is not meant for you, or you get bored with it, so you change to something else.

Well said olotu20, my parents used to say that. As a matter of fact, every millennial and even Gen Z used to say that. Because we know nothing is free, even if someone gives us something in the name of a gift and a good gesture and does work for us for free.

They give goods and their services for free and after some time they ask for something more precious and then you realize why they were giving you that much importance in the start.
