Electrum crashes when opening addresses

Hi all,

I installed Electrum successfully on my Mac (MacOS 11.7.11) and connected it to my bitbox02. However, when I want to open the tab addresses it crashes every time.

Bitbox02 has the newest firmware. Electrum is updated.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you also have the Bitbox app installed on your computer?  It is possible that you have a conflict because only one app can communicate with the device at a time.  Make sure you close the Bitbox app before launching Electrum and connecting to the hardware wallet.

yes I have the App installed. But even with a fresh restart and immediate start of Electrum, Electrum crashes when I click on addresses.

So the Bitbox app works normally, only Electrum gives you problems?  Have you tried using Electrum without a Bitbox device?  For example, create a new wallet with a seed phrase and try to open the addresses tab?

I dont know.  Im a PC user so I cant help you there.  I guess its possible because it sounds like some kind of problem specific to your setup.

Well, since it looks like the problem is only with Electrum, I suggest you try to run the app from the Terminal to pinpoint the problem further.

Alternatively, you can go to Tools > Preferences to enable persistent logging.  After checking the "Write logs to file" box, you will need to restart the app.  the logs will be saved in your hidden Electrum data folder.

What Electrum version specifically?
It may be a slightly older version of Electrum and if your wallet has "[imported, watching only]" on its wallet name in the title bar, that's a bug in that version.
Specifically v4.7.0.

Because this looks like the issue that's already fixed in the latest version, if so, just upgrade to v4.7.1.

Otherwise, please add more information like the current installed Electrum version and you may include the logs presented in the crash report dialogue box.

My recommendation would be to install Electrum 4.7.1 using Python, install the PyQt6 and Bitbox02 libraries, and run it from the console so that the traceback tells you where the problem is with the graphical interface if there is an error.

It should be in "logs" folder inside your electrum datadir, default location (official doc): electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/faq.html#where-is-the-electrum-datadir-located

Is that the full logs? I can't seems to find any related issue about the crashes when opening the addresses tab. All seems related to the network it be a problem for crashes since you can run Electrum offline.

I think it's better try to uninstall everything, but before you uninstall, back up all files from "~/.electrum" to another folder, then start to uninstall Electrum.
Once you're done, try to reinstall it again for testing try to create a testing wallet and check if the addresses tab can be opened normally.

The only errors that it contains are some server connection problems which is normal.

Usually, the error comes at the end of the log.
And make sure that you've reproduced the crash to include it to the latest log file, else, it'll not be useful.
In case you didn't reproduce it when you enabled logging, do this:

• Go to Logs folder and clear the previous logs there or take note of the log files' names and mark them as old logs.
• Launch Electrum and reproduce the issue until it crashes.
• Then open your logs folder again and look for the latest log, check the lines for errors.

And have you updated from the older version that I mentioned?
Have you closed any running instance of Electrum when you updated it?
If not sure, follow BitMaxz instructions to reinstall Electrum but make sure that nothing is running while it's being updated.

Hmm, the same result even after reproducing the crash.
At this point, it can be a runtime error due to your outdated OS (although v11.7.11 should be supported) rather than Electrum code-specific.
That is assuming that it's the end of the log and you haven't missed more lines below.
Since there's no reliable logs, we're practically blind and I'm not a macOS expert so I can't help with OS-specific issues.

Or maybe an isolated issue in the regression fix in 4.7.1 (it works in other OS), try v4.6.2 and see if it'll also crash.

The logs appear to reveal nothing. I believe the problem stems from your operating system rather than the software itself.
I've noticed that many software programs do not work on MacOS 11.7.11, which appears to be due to an outdated framework or a missing or outdated version of the library that the software is attempting to use.

Since you are using the most recent version of Electrum, I believe you should try downgrading a bit by switching to Electrum 4.7.0. or even lower. You can download the lower version from here: https://download.electrum.org/

If it still crashes, then take the logs by going to Finder > From the Go menu, select Utilities > Open Console > Then user reports and look for Electrum.

You can post the logs here or bring your issue directly to https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues to get better assistance.

To find the crash, as opposed to just network logs, you need to install the Python .zip (or .tar.gz) version of Electrum and then run it from a terminal.

You don't have to uninstall your old electrum, his is temporary.

Go to the electric site -> download -> pick the "python source" option with a file name ending in .tar.gz.

Download it, then open a terminal and go to the downloads folder and type pip install <filename>

But first create a virtualenv using

Now you can type "electrum" in the terminal and reproduce the crash, then post the stack trace here.
