I do agree with one thing though, people need to take action, writing things down, being honest about wins and losses, and reflecting on the impact, that’s solid advice, change really does start with awareness.

Though, it might be effective as you may ought it to be but it’s important for one to have the awareness and the ability to stick to it, because it will make them to reflect to it and make good decisions through it for their own good and to help them prevent the harm that comes with being irresponsible towards gambling, which will be of no good result to them but will destroy their lives if care is not taken.

It is easy to tell a person that he or she has to stop gambling and start doing something productive with their life, but it seems that forgetting that it is not so easy to stop habits. From my personal opinion, if you don't over gamble, you will be ok, like you casually do it not to take it like a career, but just maybe once in a while, I think you are ok, but then it do have the potential to be addictive so it is risky.

Gambling should be treated casually, not too seriously, and it needs discipline and self control so that you won't over step and over gamble. This kind of decision surely comes from the gambler himself. I don't think it will be easier for the addicted gambler to just change without motivation. Usually, they need solid reason why they need to alter their life for the better. So if they haven't found it yet, I don't think they will have the reason to change.
