A lot has happened over the years, at the very beginning social media monetization became a means for citizens in developing countries to earn from home. People are ready to do anything on social media to get paid. The other day, a lady on live stream, asked a woman with disability if she could jump into the river for 40 bucks not knowing the lady has disabilities. Without the hesitation the lady jumped and almost drowned, immediately the influencer ran and ended the livestream.

I know you must have heard or seen crazy things people are doing to get paid on social media. My question is, have we lost our sense of humanity because of social media monetization? Sympathy, empathy, fear, self-preservation are attribute of humanity, and if we don't care about them anymore what will become of the world in the nearest future?

That this blogger only had enough imagination to create life-threatening content? What does developing countries have to do with it, and the specifics of monetization of content in social networks there? Probably the reason is the level of intelligence of the one who creates the content... On the contrary, there are even children who create safe content and monetize it perfectly. There are a bunch of other examples of secure content that is successfully monetized. Of course, if a blogger is not burdened with a lot of intelligence, then all his "creativity" will consist of videos of people banging their heads against a wall, jumping into a river, running across the road in front of a truck or something like that.

So, which content are you talking about? How do you know that the influencer ran? Did someone record it, too, or did the influencer do a livestream or something similar? Not gonna lie, it feels naive to run away when you know the world likes to bark at the slightest showing of weakness, especially on social media.

I also think this isn't directly related to developing countries. I'm sure there's a popular story on how an influencer was caught in Japan after doing some stupid things, too. This can happen anywhere, some people just make bad decisions.

This incident didn't happen in a developing country. It was an American TikTokker or livestreamer or something like that.

My question is, have we lost our sense of humanity because of social media monetization? Sympathy, empathy, fear, self-preservation are attribute of humanity, and if we don't care about them anymore what will become of the world in the nearest future?

Whenever people say things like the world has changed in the sense that people are now more horrible, I don't totally agree. The world has always been horrible; the difference is, now we have social media to heighten it. Also, now, it has been made in a way that being horrible or rude is the new "cool", so people get to be what they truly are openly. People can openly be racist or rude to others. If you say the world changes in a way that people can be their true, horrible selves without hiding it, then I can agree, but what I do not agree with is acting like the world was good before and now it is bad.
I mean, there were times when actual human beings were seen as possessions, to do with as they pleased. And don't for a second think people have changed from that mindset. They just don't show it because the world today does not allow it. If the world allows it, humans will begin to own slaves again and treat them worse than animals.

So, people in the world have always been horrible way before social media or the internet. They are only just restricted to do what society allows to a certain level.

Technology has it negative side too, with the proliferation of internet and social media, everyone can make a clout or name for himself to make money but it could mean that they could do stupid things.

Not the first time that we have seen this kind of challenge, as far as I can remember, there were also some kind of known challenge that someone died of it. I don't think that we have lost our sense of humanity. But as humans, we are still evolving and maybe in the next 10 years we don't know the cover or the extend of social media. For me just take the good side of it and just uses your common sense whether to jump on those kind of challenges or not for just a few bucks.

The government needs to regulate the operations of these content creators because they are going too far. People are using almost everything, including sensitive issues, to create content for financial benefits.

I was so angry when some people were livestreaming some car accident victims instead of offering help. Some of these victims needed to be given first aid, but people were just using them to create content.

Poverty and greed are contributing to a lack of sympathy and compassion among humans. Most people are just focused on money and nothing else.

I see a lot of garbage on social media in the name of content creation, there are some that makes sense but a lot of them are total nonsense. Everybody wants to get views and start to earn, I think that the trend is catching on fast especially among poor people who are looking for where to hustle and make easy money.

Now you don't know what is real or fake anymore because people will stage realities which you wouldn't know that it is fake. Also AI have made us not to know what is real anymore, many people just want to watch anything which majority of them doesn't add any value to their lives. I think we should be limiting what we view on social media so that our brains will not be occupied by many garbages that are dumped on us by content creators.

Poverty and greed are contributing to a lack of sympathy and compassion among humans. Most people are just focused on money and nothing else.

In my country there are many online class which offering ebook, mentoring to earn money fast from content, my daughter joined and shocked how algorithm work, with uploading 20 repetitive video of farmers pulling out cassava without any message or editing, he can get thousand dollar from facebook. I think these phenomena explain that as long as there are market  (audiens which enjoyed content) then producers (content creators) will continue producing. Economic principle, what people consume will be produced more, If high views, big engament and create money can be achieved with sensational, trivial even low quality/ trash content, then its normal many people continue to produce such content.

So we can conclude both content creator and audience play role in moral and brain degradation because audice give incentif for under quality content and and the algorithms reinforce these patterns. Last information I got that China government start regulating content creator by asked them certification when they cover or produce content with sensitive topic, such as economy, health and medicine, education and finance even fiction drama also regulated by prohibited producing drama about CEO and poor lady story which they think unrealistic and full of fantasy which can cause bad effect for society.

At The recieving end, everyone has to protect himself knowing that the intention of a regular content creator is to earn from the media platforms and wherever he project is majorly centred on generating more revenue for himself.

If a content creator tells you to endanger yourself in his livestream and you go on to to It, it only means one thing and that's the fact that you don't like yourself to even start with. Both the content creator and the followers can endanger themselves on the media if caution isn't taken because some have landed themselves in prison all in a bit to generate content. As much as the earning power on the media is high, it ability to also destroy is equally high.

Maybe the one that perform it also wanted to be famous that's why he did what the influencer wanted him to do in exchange of money. So it's a win win for both of this clowns. But he didn't know that his life will be in danger, or what we thought so. Perhaps this is just a setup so that again, both of this two can gain the notoriety in social media, get new followers and then the views and the clicks for money. It is what it is though for this new generation and as parents, we should really be careful on what our children is viewing nowadays as it's mostly garbage or controversial just to get the number of views for monetization.

I think that the woman who jumped into the water for 40 bucks was to blame, because no one forced her to do that. She has her own brain, and the influencer's job is just to suggest such an experiment. And stupid things are not only done by fools on social media, but if you remember, there were a lot of shows on MTV about idiots who were stupid, like Johnny Knoxville and I bet you will, where the host gave money to idiots for doing stupid things (like getting a tattoo with Ricky Martin).

All technology made by man has been abused. Web2, Web3, AI, Bitcoin, and so many others have been abused by people who are not responsible. You can't blame the creator, nor those who are using it for good, because in life, there will always be good and bad people in all things.

OP, do me a favor, I want to know what punishment was given to the live streamer after she was reported. Did her account get banned from live? Tell me, because she is supposed to be in jail after that incident.

A lot of things are happening on social media, the influencers or social media content creators are just doing things to get views and engagement, anything that will give them more views in their content is what they focus on doing, they don’t care how it will affect the humanity. Some of them even do something deliberately just for people to comment so that they can earn more money with the engagements in their posts.

However, these acts from them is becoming problems, they crossing boundaries and it is becoming obvious that some of them are not posting relevant content, and some are even misleading their followers just for money.

I think the government needs to regulate all these activities for the safety of the general public because these content creators are doing things that are not right and are above expectations.

I understand your point very well but I don't think that it's actually a problem of social media monitization as you wants to put it. There is a problem with this present generation of youths , Social media has done allot of harm to our society and the youths are the once mostly affected by the influence of social media.

The problem lies with the government, there should be a way that government should control the use of social media in countries especially developing countries were there is no legal framework to guide the use of social media in most of these developing countries. This is the reason why we are seeing allot of things going on in social media these days.

Right tools on the wrong hands. Social medias were made available for the masses without proper guidance and education. Back then, social medias were used to connect friends, families and people from different corners of the world who had interests in common. Now it's used as a mean to spread the most pervert kinds of content and as an arena where people fight against themselves, while others spread lies, manipulation and use it to earn money on the most bizarre ways (like dropping a disabled person in the water).

And now, it's not something you can really prevent from happening. People are addicted to the lowest categories of content and there are always clever social influencers willing to make money with that.

People have been doing stupid stuff for a long time in search of popularity (in this case the streamer) and it will continue forever. In this case it is just very unfortunate they targeted someone who didn't know better and it created a very dangerous situation. Who knows, maybe the streamer was unable to swim and could not have helped either way, but I don't know if they went for help or just ran off completely. Sadly the internet has amplified this influencer and vanity culture in society, allowing it to spread much further and much faster. Plus the monetary incentive makes it much worse, maybe these social media platforms should pay more taxes or fines for the irresponsible behavior of their users.

That's desperation and they'd do whatever it takes to make money. Let's not look only on the bad side that it creates but more of the good side that it provides opportunity to those who have never knew that they can make money out of these social media apps. I think being a content creator has also the responsibility to their audience on what type of contents they do. If they are specific to this like doing acts and getting paid for it, that's their choice. Do not generalize content creators that are doing stuff they like but some are just trying to survive. I am not tolerating the life threatening contents they do for the sake of money. But that's the least they can do they think is right to provide out of survival and desperation.

It's not uncommon to see strange things on social media like the ones you mentioned, OP, and many other crazy examples. These are simply to attract the attention of the audience. Whether you get praise or criticism, both will generate profits, that's how our social media operates today, but we also need to realize that there's no smoke without fire. The audience/content audiences today are absurd, a lot of useful content doesn't get much attention, but weird, trivial, mediocre, or even completely useless content often attracts more interaction, that's why I think the problem isn't just with the content creators, but also with the platforms and the audiences themselves. As long as this kind of content continues to be rewarded with attention, it will continue to thrive.

Humanity lost it's sense of reasoning long ago since technology came into play.

We can't possibly end it now can we? We just gave to live with what we have today. The social media has been a distraction for the younger generations for long but it's good they have been able to turn it into something that's worth their time.

Unfortunately there will be a bad side at the end trail. People gets hurt all in the name of making the bag, trying to show the world a life they don't even live off the screen.

It's just the beginning though, we have even gotten to our prime as man is just beginning to explore the little things. Just wait till we get to the peak. Smiley

It’s really crazy the rate at which social media monetization has cost so many damages , everyone is now a content creators , no more privacy, few days ago someone collapsed in my neighborhood, instead of people to help out, everyone was busy videoing the incident I was just pissed , the desperation to get rich through social media is alarming this days, many are lucky enough to succeed through it which has trigger others to put more effort and no matter what it takes them , that is why it now look like they do things that make sense and the once that don’t make  sense just for the money , things wasn’t this bad when the idea of monetization wasn’t on board .
