I think the problem isn't even that the people do not understand what is happening because most of them do. The problem is that survival can make people accept what they know is wrong, just to make it through one more day. And that is exactly why this cycle keeps going, and the world leaders are just exploring that weakness becauase is "easy"

When you are in this kind of country where things happening this way, you just have to leave in a way where everything depends on your strength, not depending on any governmental bodies to help you through poverty. Thats the only way you can sustain yourself and family when coping in this kind of system.

This is a reoccurring situation and Leaders would never take the masses seriously because they know how to get back at them.

One of the greatest weapon use to manipulate and control people, is poverty, and that's what most government/politicians try to inject into the people through several ways. And in this current society, where values and integrity isn't a regular thing among the people, it becomes hard to find those who won't fall for their obvious manipulative acts. Of course, large percentage of the masses are hypocrites, but it's even more disappointing when you realize that this same politicians keeps using the same old tricks over and over again for different generation of people.

Nothing is clear. In which country do they distribute thousands of dollars to the hungry masses? I'm also willing to stand for hours in the sun for this.

I doubt if OP was actually referring to dollars. Distributing $1000 to hungry masses doesn't make them hungry masses, but just masses
Take my country for example, we use naira, and 1000naira is not even up to $1. But assuming the OP was talking about dollars, then it's worth knowing the exact country.

This is a good political post, but I am not sure if it's a good economics post. I understand and agree that we are not really putting the presidents and politicians that we elect into what they should be doing and not questioning them. We are more focused on beating the "other team" than we are interested in making sure that we are winning and not them.

We are working for politicians to win over others, and in return we win nothing, and we fool ourselves that we won. The most known all around the world is USA, and trump voters fool themselves into thinking the nation is better, when every verifiable data shows they are worse.

But blaming hunger or poverty alone does not capture the whole picture. Because many times people are forced to take small benefits, it is not always their weakness but the pressure of the situation, In my opinion the problem lies deeper in the lack of education, lack of awareness and a long standing dependent mentality. If people gradually start understanding the value of their rights and decisions then this temptation of small money will not work. Change will not come overnight but real change begins when the mindset changes.

Sometimes I don't want to blame the masses for selling their vote, although I know it's very wrong for anyone to sell their vote, but because of the hunger in the country, the people just sell their vote to eat. The government understands this very well, so they put their people in absolute poverty,  so they can prey on them during elections. It's just a good strategy that has been working for African leaders and they are not ready to stop it anytime soon.

The dictator's unwritten handbook states in its first rule that the people must be kept occupied with other things so they don't have time to think too much about what the government is doing.

That's why they invest so much time and money in political and social campaigns that make them look good, and if for any reason someone criticizes or sees a flaw in their rule, it never hurts to throw one of them overboard and make them take the blame as a scapegoat, either by demoting them to another political position or through a smear campaign that people will eventually forget.

You could have mentioned which country or countries you were specific talking about op for more clarity. Anyway, this hypocritical nature of humans doesn't really surprise me and isn't really news to me since I have known about this sort of stuff for ages.

As the saying goes, the strong survive while the weak perish. This is the sole survival rule of our world. It's best to avoid becoming hypocrites ourselves in this context instead of wasting time focusing on others.

One problem about most citizens is that they are as corrupt as the politicians, Even though the politicians are corrupt and they are the cause of the problem you must also remember that they are the reflection of the people. The same things would keep on happening even if you end up kicking out the current politicians that are in power, it is more of a mindset problem of the people that needs to change. indeed the masses are hypocritical because they are also capable of the same crimes that they criticise but they don't have the opportunity yet.

Exactly, corruption is one of the major problems that people are actually suffering or facing. But the fact that you didn't generalise is actually a great thing but that doesn't mean or classify that the rest are saints. Don't just the politicians or higher ranked members but also the citizens including the less privileged people are going against the law without owning themselves accountable. As a citizen of a particular country, you are being given the right to vote and to be voted for. So every individual is free to vote for any candidate of their choice as their representatives. But what it actually killing some people is that they are selling their votes, not knowing that selling their votes is equivalent to selling their rights. And if we sell our rights as a citizen we shouldn't expect much from our leaders or representatives. In fact the token that is being used to buy our votes is not enough to feed for a single day talkless of many years. Its even a great thing that voting is not made mandatory.

Propose alternatives for how public money should be used and you will attract the rage of the masses towards yourself. If not the rage, it's going to be the mockery.

People have what they deserve. If a country's situation is bad, be assured the local citizens are part of the problem. Therefore, if you are an aware individual, give a shit to society. Take care your own life and the people who you are responsible for.

I barely make comments on political issues but I think on this matter I would give my own opinion from what I am seeing from a messed political system.First thing first,I would call that money they distribute on every election as “peanut money” the Op even mentioned the amount distributed on election.Most time I ponder in my heart concerning the masses that are used by the government and at the end of the whole thing they still go home empty handed;no recognition,no political appointments and lastly no youth empowerment.For how long would the masses realize that it pays to vote right and not by the highest paid money from political parties they don’t even know.

This is the reason why all of the nations in the world are unhappy with their leaders results, but not their leaders. Like for example the biggest nation everyone knows the politics of is Trump, and yet republicans do not realize the complaining they do about the gas prices are because of the person they elected.

We have reached a point in human history, where "democracy" doesn't mean "let's elect the best candidate", it became "lets elect our bad guy instead of their bad guy" and that is why we are all having so hard time now. I am not any better, the person I vote for is not a great dude, I wish I was any better, I am part of the problem, but I vote for him because he is not the other party bad guy, if in any case we will suck, might as well let my guy try to be bad at least.

The politicians have one simple strategy. First, they steal your money and hoard it to provide infrastructure for the society. Lastly, they force the price of things up. That's what they do to keep the masses a beggar forever. In a world full of poor infrastructure in developing countries, suppliers will spend more to transport goods within the country. That will increase the price of goods in the country as well. Poor electricity, high price of oil, all of these things are happening all at once in one country. What do you think will be the faith of the masses because 80% wont be able to find a solution to these problems.

This is a serious matter that needs to be addressed among our selves, because I don't understand how the idea of buying vote came to us and now became the major serious problem to us, and even now that masses are now aware that politicians are using that idea to tackle us still because of poverty, some masses are not able to avoid it and choose appropriate leaders.

Those people in power they know that there are greedy and poor people among the masses, then they make life difficult for them so that when ever they come with small opportunities they will be praising them that they have done good. they are making the masses more poorer, making jobs opportunities unavailable and make life more difficult for people so that when ever category of people among them or any regime among them cime in power and make small ease for them or share money during elections they can not have option other than to accept and keep voting for them. For long time ago that's how they keep spinning our minds, if we can come to our senses, and keep hypocrite, greediness and selfish interests aside, we can bring positive changes to our nations.

Hunger has made the masses turn to economic mediocre, the masses who are supposed to stand up for their rights because they are hungry fall and lie down and open their hands on the floor to relieve little drops of water in thir hands to quench their taste and keep their belly full to see another day.

Don't you know rhay loyalty deserves rewards? I think this should had better been discussed in the politics and societies board if we have to talk about it in the political view where the masses voices are no more heard when considering moving motions of the laws.

So they organise campaigns and political movements and election campaigns and still know that the hungry masses who are hypocritical would come and wait under the sun and wait for hours to collect 4 thousand or 5 thousand as the case may be and still go back to thei house complaining. I feel your pain mate, and I can see the angle you are coming from. It is mostly likely to me in my country where nothing works in the right direction because of corruption and bad leaders.

The primary problem related to this case you brought here are we the citizens; although not all of us are the same, but majority of us are corrupt, but if corruption works in your own way, and in your favor we call it connection, and that’s the same thing these leaders are using to get us; we appears so cheap to them that’s why they suffered us with hunger and bad government so that when are poor we will take the peanuts they will give us to vote for them even without fulfilling their previous campaign promises.

Enough of all these; I think we need to share awareness to our people to respect our dignity and stands for the truth even though the electoral commission is already corrupt also, I don’t think anything good will come out of this coming election because these governments are selfish and knows only themselves.

In any case, it's better to expect a donation of thousands of dollars in the hot sun than to expect a handout while freezing from the cold. But seriously, why should the population have any other attitude towards politicians besides the mercantile one? After all, for politicians, the population is just a commodity, the electorate, which they almost always deceive in their election promises.

The OP is specifically describing the state of things in his country with how politicians treat the citizens and their attitude towards infrastructural and human development. I understand it's different with each country how politicians relate with and view the masses. Even citizens rights nowadays is glaringly different from one country to another as a result of the ruling system in place. For the politicians their aim and objectives is always towards the next election which the citizens comes second in that objective.

first and foremost this thread would have been in the politics and society, but however this case is common in many part of the world where we have failed and corrupts  leadership. this leaders create hardship in the economy, making things difficult for the masses and still pretend to be savior when they are coming for another tenue. like some places in my local government, when a contract is awarded to them, they just do it partially or partly and left it without completing it, they will wait till election time and promised the mases to support them to go for the second tenue to be able to complete the incomplete project, this will make most of this innocent mases to see them as a competent hand. and they will start doing things like shearing relief material, money and other incentives, including scholarships and other job opportunities to few members to make other believe they will even do more better in the second tenure when they dont even have better plans for them. politicians are just very trickish.

This is the theory most evil politicians use against their people, just to keep them in constant suppression. This political elite knows that when their citizens are poor, they can easily buy their vote because they are hungry, but if the citizens are doing well for themselves, they can easily call out any politicians that is not doing well, and may vote him out of office during election, because they are not making decisions based on what is given to them to support an incompetent candidate.

Unfortunately, some countries' citizens have sold their integrity and could betray their brothers even for a plate of pottage.

This is the effect of poverty, because poverty will make you lose your integrity faster than anything else. You will see someone trying to convince you that a black poster is red, just because he had been paid peanut.
I have seen that countless times in my country, but the one that really shock me, and has refuses to leave my head, was when civil servants were protesting that the minimum wage should be increased, can you imagine that a group of people where paid to protest against those civil servants that was protesting for the betterment of everyone ?
That actions alone by those groups of people makes me comes to the conclusion that poverty and a higher level of tribalism is what has kept so many under develops nations were they are till date, because if any of those in power are called out, a stupid group of people will start saying that he is my brother, saying that when your brother was there, who held him accountable? What nonsense.

There's a need to amend some certain rules if it's about running for a public and high position. Because public office is a public trust and there must be a reason why they should be elected by the masses and not only through popularity. I think the public is also the one to be blamed for not changing their standards and remains to the old way to electing public officials. If they set their standards higher like not electing actors or popular people but those with degrees and proven that they've studied leadership, there might be a change from that point. Although if an elected official really has the intention to corrupt, regardless of educational attainment and standard people set, they'd do the evil thing.

When the people struggle to survive they are easier to control. A common scenario; when you’re worried about your next meal, you can’t focus on long-term change. So people taking those small money is not hypocrisy, It’s survival. You can't expect people to stand up when there's nothing in it for them in that case people will always depend on those in power for their next meal.
You know, real change doesn't happen until people aren't desperate and they don't need nothing from politicians. Being hungry makes you pick "now" over "later" . This is exactly why the system never changes. Economic independence is the real political freedom; the cycle of control will never be broken otherwise.
