It has become more of a niche product now, there are music enthusiast who are still buying DVD and stuff like that. Some are also buying dedicated music player but it is most certainly true, it has reduced demand and production.
Although that might seem sad but this kind of thing has been happening since a long ago, technology replacing old job isn't a new thing and you just going to deal with it and move on.

That's why keep cultivating your own knowledges and capial. Only then you would not be replaced by AI which is currently taking people's job even if you are expert.

In the past, in my country, we do not buy calendar. People are giving people for free during celebrations that are close to the end of the year. You can have more than 3 calenders like that at home. Some businesses will also give their customers for free.

People are still buying torches and lamps.

DVD comes with home theater and people are still buying home theater but the DVD is useless for some people like me. For people that do not really have money, they will get only DVD for their TV. I still see people buying these things.

People also still buy clocks. Also they still buy write watch just for fashion.

Sure that's 100% correct... Am just feeling nostalgic how things where back in the days...I could remember those mini desk calendars which most of us used to win maybe at a dance or a sitting competition at a birthday parties    We had lots of calendars back in the day sometimes it will be too much that we then begin to use it in wrapping our books and textbooks so it doesn't get torn... Some workplace also get to be so benevolent that they also tend to give their workers free calendars at the end of the year.. Things where just so simple and easier then, until technology came and changed everything..

I am not just concerned about these products which are no longer relevant in society as a result of the introduction of other products that perform the same tasks better and faster; my concern is also about the companies that may have lost relevance along with the products they produce or the services they render. This is why continuous research and improvement are very important in every organisation, so instead of being pushed out of the market by a new product, they can integrate into the new technological trend and maintain healthy competition with the new products.

Now, we are in an era where AI is almost taking over all jobs. Whether these companies like it or not, it is a well-known fact that this will continue to happen in the future, and it will be a big mistake on the part of organisations not to try hard to integrate AI into their systems. Everyone must choose to adapt or be ready to remain irrelevant.

For example some elderly people still prefer for use GSM cellphones rather than smartphones. I know about people, who enjoy collecting outdated devices like old pagers and fax machines. I do agree that DVD/VCD players are a thing from the past, just like many other technologies, that became obsolete and this is totally normal. OP, what is the meaning behind this forum thread? We can argue that mobile phones have reduced the usage and dependency of some products like torchlight, calendar, watch and clock, alarms, calculators etc but it doesn't mean that these products have become obsolete or their productions have drastically reduced. What happened is that phones have helped to reduce our dependency on them, example is wearing watches now are not basically to check time, people also wear watches for fashion because they can check the time on their phones. If you forgot to wear your watch you don't need to worry about know what time is because you can easily check it on your phone.

Aside from making calls with your phone it has now become an integral part of people's lives, you will rather forget your physical cash and other things at home rather than forgetting your phone. Without your phone you will feel some sort of emptiness because of your contacts, business and pleasures and using the features that your phone has.

You don't need to buy them but they are still much mass produced. There are still people who needs such things no because it's important but for comfort they just do. Today's technology if you haven't noticed are becoming very much smaller and way too comfortable. I still remember then living with my parents, we all would come out to the living room to watch the TV or for some stories with parents. But since the advent of technology and mobile phones, it seems everyone can just watch or stream directly from their devices.

Yea, things have really changed a lot, of course, with it's advance and also disadvantagess, maybe, a topic for another day.

From your example about your early days with parents, it was beautiful and there was much more relation, unity and understanding amongst family member, but many of those are tales now since it doesn't exist. Truly, technology and innovations have really changed things, and slowly, people have adopted or adjusted greatly. Even though there is still production of some of the things the OP mentioned, it wouldn't be as before, and if there is is, there is also modernization in the way or model of production to somehow fit into the present world. That is the effect of the technologies which advance and replace the existing product to the newer. Maybe we will see many more replacing the old product and that can affect to many companies that produce the product.

Elderly people who were in their 40s or above when smartphone rolled out are still using things they were addicted to it. Like my mother still reads newspaper (hard copy) despite the fact on smart phone newspaper is available 24 hours and news are coming on social media at every instant. Those who have opened their eye when smartphones were already launched don't know whats the worth of wearing wrist watch before leaving for the office. There are lot of products that have lost market after the launch of smartphones.

Do you also know that many businesses are affected because they failed to adapt and bring in new methods, they are stuck with what they have been selling for the past several years and today they lost.

No one is buying from them anymore, customers have moved on completely, business dies the moment you lack that orientation to adapt as the world evolves, when new things are coming be ready.

I remember a guy who is into electronics store, he was selling CRT monitors and LCD monitors, today people hardly use IPS monitors, people prefer to go for Miniled and Oled displays today, I told him this in 2024, today it's a hot cake business.

Yes, cell phones have put all those items right in the palm of your hand. Now at my house calendars and clocks aren’t really necessary anymore, even if they’re there, they’re just for decoration, I mostly check the date and time on my phone. But those items can’t be completely eliminated, some people still buy and sell them, and many still purchase them especially flashlights. In my neighborhood (since it’s still somewhat rural), there are workers who work at night, hunting for animals like frogs or snakes, they need flashlights as their primary tool.

Mobile devices have not completely replaced all these and to a large extent it depends on the region and the age of the consumers in question. For example, in local villages with poor or no internet connection, VCD and DVD players would be much more common than streaming services, because to stream movies online, you need a stable internet connection.

Phones have definitely not replaced alarm clocks. Most people prefer to sleep without distractions (notifications from social media and all), so they'll definitely prefer to have an alarm clock next to their bed and their phones out of the room at night. For the other things you mentioned, a phone can provide you those services to a limited extent, but if you really use those items often and for something serious, then you have to buy them.

Such villages would be rare in even developing nations because some remote villages have internet connections. They also have television station signals that have different channels. The spare parts of these old video players are also scarce that they are easily abandoned.

Some people are depending on phones for different functions to cut costs. Buying an alarm clock is a waste of money if your phone can offer the same service. I agree that phone might not be ideal in a serous activity like using it as calculator in a trading shop. You would definitely need an alarm in an large organization.

One of the good things about life is that it's dynamic so life is always in a constant state of evolution and technological advancement and that is what is happening in our today world. Sometimes I try and look back and reflect on how man has lived his life in the past, without electricity, televisions and even computers which has given birth to the Internet that we all are enjoying today. if we take a look the bigger market manufacturer like xiaomi is creating maybe 3-5 phone each year from the small model like redmi to high end like mi series. Also in some country POCO phone is rebadge version of redmi pro in another country. because of this people didnt need an old device like you have said earlier

There is still a demand for watches, calendars, torch lights and cameras. However, these are now used to show off their beauty, the practical necessity has decreased somewhat. However, even though torch lights are still used, their demand is very low compared to before. The main reason for this is not Android phones, but because the necessary roads in the country are now improved, lights are arranged. Moreover, torch lights are still used on village roads, old people are not yet accustomed to Android phones.

That's called evolution. Even those companies have evolved and have launched some other emerging products to stay in the market. Smartphone was a great innovation which changed the communication way. It did not just revolutionize communication field but also created way more employment opportunities led forward by telecom partners. The world is slowly digitalizing only because of smartphones. Without smartphones, we would still be stuck with computers for minor tasks. Now, most of us are completely relied on smartphones as most of the work done on a computer can now be done on smartphones.

Things like calendar, torch light, radio, etc are still existing in the markets but the demand is gradually decreasing. These things are turning into antics which no longer would be manufactured but they would still be in existence.

Back in the day, mp3's and cd players and all of that meant something, and even for a while when we had the iPhone, we still needed cd's and such for the car, because it wasn't tech related yet, and nowadays we still can play it via our phone from bluetooth.

So at the end of the day we are talking about something that is a lot better and these type of innovations will progress faster thanks to AI that will work towards making sure it can combine many things into one.

I was about to ask what handset has replaced or what demand of product that has reduced because of phone or smart phone, but reading this last paragraph made me understand the aspect you are talking about. Yeah surely there is revolution and innovation. That's why people often say the only thing constant in life is changes. So this is one of those changes that have taken place. It is otherwise know as advancement in technology. Although not that most of this company are no longer in existence, they are still producing things but they have to modelize it to look more attractive or to add more value. They can go into software development to produce calendar software that can be installed in mobile phone in form of theme or with some other interesting features to make people download it , atleast the business will still make sense in a digital world. This digitalization does not only implies callender, but stop watch, clock and all this you have mentioned, There is always alternative.
