Scammers will try everything to deceive people an its good that CMC release such statement, since its helpful for people especially their site user to avoid such scams. Also its good for people to think about that once there are someone contacting them directly thru private message. Then offer outrageous giveaway which they are asked to deposit before they can claim something or other crazy schemes. They better think about that those what they read came from people unknown online is a scam. I haven't receive such calls, but if I know it came from overseas I immediately cancel those calls and will not listen to anything words they say, this is some ways on how we can secure ourselves and to avoid falling as their next victim.

Coinmarketcap made their warning to community, it's good action from CMC. This scam is a very old scam type and people must prepare their knowledge about most popular scam methods used by scammers, including this scam type. From their learning and own knowledge, they will no longer have to rely on such warnings like this one from CMC to realize that anyone proactively contacting them for customer support, are surely scammers. Cryptocurrency scam book.social media: scammers could create fake accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or other social media sites and communities in general, masquerading as certain companies(Ledger, Coinbase, Trezor, etc).
fake customer support: this is mostly happening on Reddit and Twitter, but it could happen on all social media sites. Scammers would target people who had made a post concerning issue(s) with certain services(Binance, Ledger Nano S/X hardware wallet, etc) by messaging them and sending them a link to a phishing site or a download link of fraudulent software.

I wonder why this issue keeps coming up because if I'm not mistaken this is not the first time that scammers have attempted such an act. Everyone just has to be careful because one might choose to be unconcerned and not take the warning as long as they don't hb dealings with them but still it's an important message to pay attention to. Good one from CMC as they were able to quickly act as soon as they noticed that people are trying to impersonate them. As it is I don't think we'd see an end to scammers going through great lengths and taking risks to defraud people of their hard earned money any time soon and also, no matter how secure and smart you think you are, scammers will still find a way to get through.

Yes, and I don't think this is the first time CMC publishes messages of the like, since they've been in the market for over a decade, and are one of the most visited crypto-services, and therefore one of the first ones a scammer would think about impersonating. I can't remember when exactly, but I would say that this warning is not new, just a kind reminder they post from time to time which, taking the nature of many new adopters, does not lose value because it is repeated over time.

It has always been happening that you discover scammers in fascinating other reputable platforms just to be able to take advantage of unscrupulous users, we also have to be more sure of what we are doing and also confirm we are on the right platform before engaging on anything, if you don't know how to go about it, where we can take more step for that to ask those that are experience in putting us through to avoid being scammed by those ready to take what belongs to us from us by their tricks.

This is very common and no more new, but I wonder the reason people are using Coinmarketcap for their portfolio and register on the site. I use Coinmarketcap and Coingecko, but not for portfolio, and also not to set alarm for a price a coin should get to, before alarm. I prefer to use both without email.

People might have fallen victim to this before this public announcement was made. CMC has been one of my main source of price updates on various coins and I haven't received any phone notifications from them ever, not even an email. This means anyday I happen to get any of those then I will obviously know it's a scam approach.
One thing I do when I work with any platform is first study their mode of operation and how the interact with their customers. Every business have their unique approach and once one can study this closely it will be easier to detect scams.

Only the elderly or newbies fall to this scam that is known by many people, and this scam method is used commonly not only in cryptocurrency industry. It can be used in other industries so if you are not blind or don't care to read any news around you, I believe that you must know about this scam method more than once. So knowing about it is good, the remaining challenge for you is whether you remember this scam method, and won't fall yourself to this trap. With the elderly, perhaps they are most vulnerable to be scammed, a less risky victim type is newbies.

When the official already said like this that means there is a huge scammer caught the biggest victim, If we think developer is smart than you should look the hacker. Same as the scammer in the real world they found a loop hole do some social enginnering and boom people fell for it.
I always tell not just newbie but everyone that if something to good to be true is most likely to be scam. Beside that how in the world the scammer using CoinMarketcap for scamming people and Im still wonder what method do they use, and why Coinmarketcap.

The message was well passed, and I'm sure that it will be a reminder warning to those gullible people. I often wonder how easy people could believe something, especially if it's not official and you were not the one who initiated it. This reminds me, a while ago, a friend of mine that's close to his 50 told me that he opened a Bybit account because he connected with the CEO of Bybit on Facebook And truly, he was guided to open the account, but he had not funded it when he told me. Who knows what would have happened? Most importantly, I wonder how someone could be that old and still fall for all those nonsense.

The number one red flag here is cold calling. No Crypto platform will call you just like that, neither will they ask you to provide them with sensitive information about your wallet. These are security consciousness everyone is supposed to have at the back their minds. Scammers will disguise as anything just to get information from their target victims. Be mindful where and who you share your information with and never act under pressure.

Are we ever going to be able to solve the security problems in the cryptocurrency space? Whenever I read these type of news about crypto scammers and hackers is only points to major issue that is still in the crypto space which is the issue of security. And it is obvious because for scammers to identify and cold call crypto users is an example. The most vulnerable crypto users are those who lack technical knowledge about cryptocurrencies.

Yes, that will always be the case here. There will be scammers and hackers and bad entities that are going to take advantage of this market. And the best weapon against them is to educate ourselves and self-awareness. But the thing is that there could be investors that are not self-aware and easily deceived. Even if we warn them many times or perhaps they know it already, yet they still fall for this trick and realized it late when they became the next victim.

This is the nature of the industry. Everything about cryptocurrency is online and scammers and attackers must continue to find ways to steal our assets. We must be aware of this reality and safeguard ourselves. As long as we are in this space, we are all vulnerable. There was when I had this mindset of having a scam free space. But it's not gonna happen, we must learn to live with them, and learn how to be safe. And the best way to do this is to master every new format of the scammers. Most times they come with old formats with a minors tweak, but if you have mastered their formats, you'll always recognise a scam attempt.

That's true. Scammers usually go for companies and people with a good reputation so that their victims will be none the wiser and it's the poor unsuspecting victims that are left to face the problem and their trust will be broken and some of them develop phobia to have any dealings with these sort of companies.

I grew up with Bitcoin through CMC before Binance bought it for a whopping $200m some years ago, and it immediately lost its value. I don't think that if they were to resell the platform today, they would get back their initial investment because we have many market caps tracking Bitcoin, and we have many other institutions that provide API for small businesses to get real data. I don't even think people use their API data to source for real time price like other platforms; they don't have accurate data like Coingecko and some other market websites. Everything was going well with the platform until they allowed people to sign up and make comments, the intension was to have access to users data, but the outcome didn't end well, you see people shill diffrent coins on the comment sections, some promote coins on the platform. Perhaps that was even the essence of allowing the comments on the website, I'm not sure, but the platform is too useless for my liking if you compare it to Coingecko.

https://x.com/CoinMarketCap/status/2051542491795485005So they just released a public announcement in their social media that scammers and cyber criminals are impersonating their brand or company. Scammers are cold calling anyone. I haven't received any though, and most likely leak personal data of crypto enthusiast might have been used here. This is just a warning though to stay safe everyone. Coinmarketcap is a very big brand that has made it's name when it comes into the cryptocurrency space, and it's no doubt that over the years, they have been able to offer the great crypto contents in respect to educating newbies get familiar with Bitcoin and crypto in general, and likewise provide enough data to all coins been launched on the crypto community. Making it one of the trusted online platform. So I won't be surprised if scammers tries to use the name of such a huge brand to scam ignorant people through phone calls or Gmail. Because it's very obvious, seeing a call and the person claiming to be Coinmarketcap agent, tells you you just won a huge sum, but you will need to deposit a certain and you foolishly falls for it. Hence the need why we always need to Do Our Own Research before jumping into an conclusion.

No, it"s the leaked data from the previous data breach on their platform. If those data are personal info, emails, mobile phone such platform don't have any accountability and doesn't take responsibility, they will just announce what happened like it's normal and anyone might experience it. That's how personal data are held and consider on such platforms.

That's a strange part of Coinmarketcap; I've never seen a phone number on my profile, and Coinmarketcap has stated that they don't have phone numbers. If someone calls you claiming to be a Coinmarketcap employee, it's an obvious scam attempt. They have contact information on their about page, and the majority of them only have social media accounts; they never use or include a phone number in their contact information. So they cannot know our phone numbers because they do not exist on CoinMarketCap. So how did they end up getting our numbers even though the site had the previous data breach? If I search for "coinmarketcap phone number" on Google, it appears that on the first page there is a phone number that I believe is pretending to be a CoinMarketCap CS, which is an obvious scam attempt.
