Did somebody ever received a BTC amount by accident ... This is a stupid question with the developpement of Technology ... But who nows I mean did someone received it previously
Yes there were plenty of instances, receiving doubt withdrawals when you withdraw from casinos due to glitches and hackers sending to random address etc.

This year, Bithumb accidentally distributed 620,000 BTC to its users, these mistakes do happen.  Roll Eyes

My personal experience is that yahoo62278 accidentally sent 0.01 BTC extra as part of a campaign, informed him about the situation and he asked me to keep it as a gift.

Maybe if you consider dust attack as a accident as this is being used by some to reveal someone's address. But other than that, there could be mistakes by someone sending a Bitcoin to a wrong address.

Well addresses doesn't have a name, but if you want to return it back then by all means do it. But for the majority, it's free money so I don't think that they will just simply return it as we don't know what are the reason that someone might send you free Bitcoin.

It would have still being an issue if the person is someone who normally deals with lots of transactions since their is actually no specific name tag or means of verifying a particular address belongs to a particular person, I guess in your case he was still fresh in his memory to actually pin point the address back to you.

Well I think knowing the owner of the address you transact with whether recently or long ago wouldn’t be much of a big deal except if you do forget instances, even if he the sender deals with lot of people…when he makes that mistake of sending to one of his former recipients, he can surely know who that recipient it maybe by checking the amount he had early sent to that person.

You can easily trace the address owner especially when the money involved is huge and significant, so it’s not much of a big deal..

@OP you can actually receive BTC in your wallet and it might sound like an accident but I’m a mostly realistic occasion, it is a dust attack or something….except if the amount is huge, that’s when it is a mistake or accident.

Some people might be lucky.

It is rare for such to happen to you at random. It's very possible but I have not seen anyone close to me or one I know of who had received coins, by mistake to their address.

Most times like members have pointed out would be dust attack. You see in your wallet received transactions but they are but even up to a penny. Those are attempts of scammers to monitor your transactions or steal from you using similar addy.

Lol, you clearly won't be sending the coin back to an address you have no idea who owns it. It's easy to say you will send back but no one would be that clumsy to send it back.

The likelihood of accidentally sending Bitcoin to another person is very low. For example, if you manually enter the recipient's address and make a mistake in one character, your transaction will simply not be sent. The number of possible private keys in the Bitcoin network is so large that guessing someone else's private key is virtually impossible. 🙋

The situation is entirely different if the sender is your regular counterparty. If they have interacted with you repeatedly in the past, they may have your address written down for receiving satoshi. Theoretically, due to haste, they could make a mistake and copy this address for a new transaction. Therefore, funds intended for someone else could be received by you... Since the sender is someone you know, you can certainly negotiate with them about the fate of these funds.  🧖

The worst-case scenario, in my opinion, is receiving a small amount of satoshi (so-called "dust") that was intentionally sent to you by scammers to deanonymize you or, worse, steal your bitcoins. It's important to be able to defend against these types of attacks. In particular, any actual receipt of unintended satoshi should be immediately tracked. Any Bitcoin wallet has a list of incoming and outgoing transactions. 💁

Yes, I have received bitcoin before that was not supposed to be sent to me. Luckily it was someone that I know that sent it. We had a deal recently at the time and he mistakenly copied my bitcoin address again few minutes later and sent me the coin he supposed to send to someone else. It was good that he made a mistake that did not cost him, but which he learned from.
I have received fiat several times in my bank account. The bank contacted me and sent an account for the funds to be returned. But I have never received Bitcoin by accident from anybody. I assume that Bitcoiners are very careful since any mistake could lead to loss of funds. He is lucky that he didn't send it to the wrong people; he would have lost his money. It is wise to cross-check addresses before sending any coins.
This is why we need to be extremely careful when sending Bitcoin to an intending address because mistakes can be very costly if you send to an address who you don't know the owner, you will be at the mercy of the receiver to resend it back to you. Unlike fiat where your bank can contact you and even block your account because they are centralized, Bitcoin is decentralized and there is no personal identification on the Blockchain.

Personally I've not had any experience about receiving Bitcoin that was not meant for me and I don't think that it is something that happens often because we hardly hear about Bitcoin being sent to wrong address. It shows that more Bitcoin senders are very careful while sending, they make sure that it's a correct address.

The question actually has to be more specific, because you also need to specify whether you are asking about someone receiving a bitcoin amount sent to them by someone who accidentally used their address somehow, or you mean to ask whether someone has ever received some bitcoins from a total stranger only because the sender had either a single or multiple characters changed in the address by accident, for example, if the address is ending with: erh5e and the sender has it changed to: erh4e.

Now, there is obviously a possibility for someone to receive some amount accidentally if someone has used their address by mistake, but when it comes to the second scenario I mentioned, it is practically impossible for someone to receive bitcoins in their wallet just because someone misspelled a single or a couple of characters in the wallet address they were sending the funds to, because a wallet which you are using to make the transaction won't allow the transaction to go through, because the address will most probably be invalid, as someone mentioned it earlier, an address has to have a valid checksum, and when a character is changed, the wallet will check and if the checksum doesn't match, it will be considered invalid.

If it is sent just to a random address by accident, I do not think that will be possible, it is either the address shown as not correct or the person sent it to someone he has sent money to before. I know someone this one second happened to, but the person know him and sent back the bitcoin to him. If it is dust attack, it can be known. I noticed dust attack is no more common like before, maybe because address poisoning is now mostly common and yielding result for the scammers.

When you already mentioned yahoo62278 in the wrongly sent BTC contest, it must be mentioned that his case was when Bitsler mistakenly sent him 39+ BTC instead of 0.394

Baryom    2018-11-03        I sent him 39.4 BTC instead of 0.394 BTC for a signature campaign payment. (My mistake obviously) He returned me 39.005 BTC as soon as he saw that :

Such case happen frequently when someone mistakenly send coin to an external address that's already in his possession but sending to another address you barely have or know about mistakenly is very rare cause the address was created in such a way that they don't get repeated or correct if a sender replace some letters or numbers.
For instance I can try guessing a wallet address but sending coins to that particular address would be impossible since it's not a correct one nor owned by someone.

Sending back the Bitcoin sent to you is never a problem, is knowing the person who sent you Bitcoin by accident is, for you to send it back to him or her. Because I know that this is not a regular thing we see, for someone to send Bitcoin to someone they don't know.

For the ones that have happened, it is mostly due to the wrong address being copied. It can't be traced or known who owns the address. Don't think that someone that send Bitcoin to you by accident, you will send it back to such a person if you don't know who they are or have any business with them.

These are typically not lucky accidents for receiver, other tragedies for sender, usually result of copying and pasting malicious code or simply sending money to contract address other than private wallet.
From moral standpoint, it is best course of action, but without centralisation one cannot easily trace original owner without endangering one own privacy in case of Bitcoin. This is why the golden rule is Verify, then send. Regardless of advancements of technology, human factor is the greatest danger in crypto sector. By the way I am not the lucky one who got random Bitcoin but I have sent to wrong address sometimes unfortunately.  Grin

This may happen by accident in many cases, but in reality, the number is much smaller. It has been seen many times that when sending Bitcoin from exchange to exchange on P2P, it may go to the wrong email address or the wrong ID number, but in the case of Bitcoin addresses, it is okay to make a mistake, but it is rare for Bitcoin to go to that address and enter someone's account.
However, so far, I have not recorded anyone's Bitcoin coming into my account due to such a mistake.

I can not believe that you received such money several times in your bank account. I don't know as it's like your bank account details are leaked somewhere so that there are people knowing it and sending money mistakenly to your account.

If people who don't have trade with you, can not know your bank details, how do they send money wrongly to your account?

For people who know you, after they realized their mistakes, they can directly contact you for a refund rather than asking for help from a bank.

My personal experience is that yahoo62278 accidentally sent 0.01 BTC extra as part of a campaign, informed him about the situation and he asked me to keep it as a gift.

We are talking about $250,000. Thanks a lot.
Mistakes happen and in moments like these you show your true character. I could have taken nearly 40btc from Bitsler, but then who would I be?

theoretically speaking this could happen but hey bitcoin address is very unique from the first letter till the last letter would be different Yes, it's possible. If someone sends bitcoin to a wallet they no longer control or have keys for, the funds are effectively lost, unless you know people who hold the address.

But stupid me back in year when segwit address didnt popular like today and lot address still using 1 previx address, I just send money around 300 USD to one my fellow indonesia simply I just copied his address without double check it again with my address and lucky me he send back the btc.

Did somebody ever received a BTC amount by accident ... This is a stupid question with the developpement of Technology ... But who nows I mean did someone received it previously  ...personally i swear god that i will send it back Smiley that is the right thing to do Wink Wink .............

It is true that sending it back is the right thing, but whether you are completely honest in your statement is for you to prove, I won't argue whether you will or not.  Back on question, no, I don't receive any random BTC sent to my address.  If ever I received one, I won't tell whether I will send it back or not, righteous people do not tell the left hands what the good deed the right hand's did.

Meaning if the person is genuinely honest, he don't have to announce it to the whole world, and will just do the right thing quietly.

In your case, there were $250k reasons, back then that many would just go and create a new online identity.
Too often, we have seen cases with a different outcome, but for much smaller amounts

I dont think I have heard of such happenings before and I dont really see the possibility pf that happening. This is quite uncommon in every sense because it could be same address but different network, it can't possibly be a mistake in both the address and the network. The only situation is where one already has your address and copied and sends it mistakenly, but that is still a rare case right?

It would have still being an issue if the person is someone who normally deals with lots of transactions since their is actually no specific name tag or means of verifying a particular address belongs to a particular person, I guess in your case he was still fresh in his memory to actually pin point the address back to you.
Maybe, but I think it depends on the amount of bitcoin mistakenly sent. A large amount will give the person an extra motivation to find out who the recipient is. I know it's a daunting task, and the chance of recovering it back is very slim, but they would at least try, and if they can't, they would move on.
