It's funny how a lot of the people here were against cockfighting in that thread. You questioned why people would be so cruel to animals. If it didn't make sense for two animals to be pitched against each other to fight themselves and then gamble on it, how is it okay for two human beings to be thrown into a cage to fight themselves? I know you'll say "there are rules", but that doesn't change the fact. They still punch, elbow, kick, knee, choke each other, and do many other things that they are allowed to do. It doesn't make sense. And don't tell me consent. People would consent to fight to the death if the money was worth it.
These kinds of "sports" will be stopped in the future, but probably not within your or my life.
I doubt it would be stopped in the future because it is growing. There is too much money, sponsorship and fans for it to be stopped. Besides, the people who make the most money from it would simply lobby their way into making sure it continues. Best case scenario, they would include more rules and make it less brutal, which I doubt they would do because doing that would make them lose fans.
The only thing I know is that it won't be included in the Olympics. They would be crazy to include it in the Olympics because it should not be considered a sport.
It is still a sport, much like boxing, that we watch and enjoy. MMA may look more brutal, but the monitoring procedures for athletes and referees are also enhanced. It is not the same as other martial arts. Besides, it is not street fighting; athletes also have to have martial arts basics that are indeed allowed. There are punches and kicks that are allowed and not allowed to be performed.
These are the excuses everybody keeps giving. Of course, there would be rules, more rules than boxing. If there were no rules, then how would it be different from the Colosseum? All those rules don't stop it from being brutal. The point is, two people fighting shouldn't be a sport.
To be honest, every sport is kind of brutal, maybe we don't see blood and in certain sports we don't even notice the player because the game lasts for like 10 seconds such as 100m race but how many years of intense training they did to reach that space, which is also kind of a cruelty right? SInce we are pushing the body to it's limits and we see it as normal then giving or receiving pushes also normal and high octance situation.
No, this is very different. Athletes work extremely hard, and they play even harder, but they don't train to be punched in the face. There is a reason why, when such things happen in other sports, they are called "accidents" or "fouls". A footballer can push himself so hard and have a heart attack on the pitch, a few even die, but those are accidents. The goal of training hard is to be better, not be strong enough to knock you ropen out cold.
You noticed that when two individual fight on the streets, people always gather around just to watch them exchange blow physically at each other while using all their surviving skills.
I can even make an argument that fights on the street are not as brutal as it is in UFC. The street guys are just normal people who aren't professionals, so they don't really know how to knock out people. Plus, when the fights get too serious or brutal, people rush in to separate them. In UFC, it's either you get knocked out, tap out or see out all 3 or 5 rounds, which is 5 minutes each round.
