Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

Enjoy the celebration and eat a slice of pizza! 🍕🎉

Laszlo was an early Bitcoin miner. He invented GPU mining and mined over 100,000 BTC.

His purchase of two pizzas was (to our knowledge) the first purchase made with Bitcoin.

Lazlo says he has no regrets about spending 10,000 BTC on those two pizzas.

He says

Quote
“I think it’s great to be a part of the early history of Bitcoin like this,”

This wasn't the only time he bought pizza with Bitcoin. He estimates that in 2010 he spent 100,000 BTC on pizza.

He said,

Quote
“I wanted to do the pizza thing because to me it was like getting a free pizza” and “I got the pizza for contributing to an open-source project. Usually hobbies waste time and money, but in this case my hobby bought me dinner.”

While many mourn Lazlo, he is proud that he and his family will be remembered forever!

The man, Jeremy Sturdivant, used 10,000 BTC to cover the cost of a trip to the United States with his girlfriend.

He said

Quote
"I had no idea it would become this big,"

But despite being deprived of infinite wealth, Sturdivant says, “I am proud to be a part of this global event.”

I have a lot of respect for this man.

Those two pizzas were the beginning of Bitcoin's journey to change the world.

What are your thoughts on this? 🤨

If you were in Laszlo’s position in 2010, would you spend 10,000 BTC on pizza? Why?

Was Laszlo truly losing money, or helping Bitcoin adoption?

Of course, he regrets ever paying 10,000 Bitcoin for a pizza. No person will see the price of Bitcoin and not regret paying so much for a pizza, the claim of no regret is false, deep down watching Bitcoin cost $70K, taking into account that 10,000 Bitcoin was paid for pizza.

His purchase of two pizzas was (to our knowledge) the first purchase made with Bitcoin.
He made history for Bitcoin but he actually purchased more than two pizzas and spent more than 10,000 BTC for his pizza purchases.

If this information is new with you and make you surprised, if you want to get more details about it, let's read.
Did Laszlo Hanyecz exchange 40000 BTC for 8 pizzas, not 10000 BTC for 2 pizzas?
More big transactions from this address that used to buy pizzas.
https://blockchain.info/address/1XPTgDRhN8RFnzniWCddobD9iKZatrvH4
Hanyecz talked about his pizzas - bitcoins purchases in an interview.
Quote
To Hanyecz, who told Bitcoin Magazine that he spent something near 100,000 BTC on pizza that year, the purchase was just another drop in the bucket.

“We would just give people bitcoin on the forum,” he said — sometimes 100, sometimes 1,000 BTC at a time.

Yes let's join to accept that lazlo bitcoin pizza was the most expensive, but looking at the value as at them mean that it may not actually be the most expensive because bitcoin was nothing compared to what it is today, it's interesting aspect of all these is that we all still have something to deliberate about his pizza purchase back then before things got to this extent where we are today.

Pizza's are delicious and BTC was just coding numbers back then, people could get them easily by mining, I also respect the pizza seller who accept btc as payment. Well if i could mine 10k btc a day I would also used it for something like this.

This wasn't the only time he bought pizza with Bitcoin. He estimates that in 2010 he spent 100,000 BTC on pizza.
At that moment, buying pizza was the most profitable way to spend those 10k. BTC. History could have gone differently, and it could have turned out that bitcoin would have been useless and worth zero.

Quote
“I wanted to do the pizza thing because to me it was like getting a free pizza” and “I got the pizza for contributing to an open-source project. Usually hobbies waste time and money, but in this case my hobby bought me dinner.”

You see, Laszlo didn't view bitcoin as an investment or a way to get rich (as most people do), but as part of a hobby that, in addition to enjoying the process, also brought in "dividends" in the form of a delicious dinner.

Quote
"I had no idea it would become this big,"
At that time, it was completely unclear where all this would lead, and for enthusiasts of that time, it was an ordinary hobby.

If you were in Laszlo’s position in 2010, would you spend 10,000 BTC on pizza? Why?

Was Laszlo truly losing money, or helping Bitcoin adoption?
Everyone would like to be in Laszlo's shoes at that moment (and have 10,000 BTC), but not everyone realizes that everything that's happening in the industry now wouldn't have happened if it weren't for that purchase of two pizzas that made a breakthrough... into the future.

Those 10,000 BTC were supposed to be spent on the purchase.

You all are making a big deal out of this because Bitcoin is now very pricey, if it's not pricey today no one will talk about these, they paid for something using Bitcoin at the time, they got what they paid for so what? Someone used 1 BTC to pay for a home today and 20 years later 1 BTC is 1 million dollars, so what?

If the pizza guy had 100,000 and use 10k to pay for pizza, and kept that 90k it will be cool right? The best thing you can do for yourself is to never be out of Bitcoin, whatever you buy using your Bitcoin means nothing but dropping it all Nd not having anything again is the dumbest thing to do.

Thank you for reminding us of that great day and doing so on the occasion of the celebration of your anniversary IgboBTC.

I think it has not been mentioned before, and I take this opportunity to do so because it is important to spread the word: the event [2026] Bitcoin Pizza Day on Bitcointalk 🍕 is now live and those interested can participate until June 10. The more there are the more competition there will be, but in these cases it is not about winning, but about participating in the celebration Smiley

Could it be that aside from that 10,000 bitcoin he pay for the pizza he has still more bitcoin instore? but with the value of that bitcoin for the pizza i'll regret that but maybe he is already over with that, if you will still think of that you will be unable to move on in your life, because its worth a fortune.
If he is really have now meaning he might still have some of bitcoins but wont disclose it for security reasons, if you ever lost a bitcoin, well think of this man and you will not be depressed anymore, get back up and start over, if will slow you down in life if you will always think of the past.

Speaking of regrets, anyone who found out about bitcoin at that time can start to worry that he had a chance to become a millionaire. It doesn't matter at all and there is no need to ask Laszlo specifically. everyone who is interested in the answer should ask themselves why he is not rich now? It's simple, because we can't see our future, we can't predict the value of something that doesn't seem important nowadays.
Lego is very popular today, and anyone who sees its value for several years ahead can buy it if they now see the noise that is being made about it.
As a result, we all miss something every time, someone manages to "get on the train of luck", and someone lives in those times and those events and uses those offers that their time offers them.

"The Most Expensive Pizza in Human History 🍕". It is your thinking and writing about the cost spent for two pizzas but it's just wrong one.

There are similar writings and discussions like yours on media, in many previous years, not only in 2026 but all these ones are like marketing, click-bait while the message itself is wrong.

I truly consider it is wrong because those pizzas were bought years ago and with bitcoin value and price years ago, not with bitcoin price in 2026. So taking the figure of bitcoins spent for the two pizzas trade and use the bitcoin price in 2026 for getting information like these 2 pizzas are most expensive ones in history, that's inaccurate.

If you were in Laszlo’s position in 2010, would you spend 10,000 BTC on pizza? Why?
Mixing that time with the present time will be a mistake because bitcoin is worth much more now, while back in 2010 the price was very low and people could mine bitcoin very easily. If you and I were also in that same period in 2010, we would probably spend it easily too because we would believe that more bitcoin could always be mined again without much stress.

Looking at it from today’s point of view, nobody would want to use that amount of bitcoin to buy pizza, but if we think about the situation in 2010 and imagine ourselves living in that time, then buying pizza with bitcoin would not really feel like such a serious thing.

I think it’s just us assuming that Laszlo regrets spending 10,000 BTC on pizza. Did he ever actually say he regrets it? He had no way of knowing Bitcoin would become this valuable. If he had known, then of course he probably wouldn’t have spent it that way. So, in short, there’s really nothing for him to regret.
Also, bitcoin history might have turned out very differently if that transaction never happened. Imagine if he had simply hold those bitcoins until now.. do you really think bitcoin would still have the same value today?

Also bitcoin is expensive today, not the time he brought the pizza.

Laszlo himself has repeatedly stated that he has no regrets whatsoever about the Bitcoin pizza transaction, not only on this forum he's also said so in interviews. He even stated that the transaction made him proud because he successfully bought a pizza with Bitcoin, which at the time was still considered an experiment. It actually made Bitcoin feel real to him.

I'm sure he's proud of what he did at the time, because he made a crucial step in proving Bitcoin could be used as money and Bitcoin is valuable today because there were people like Laszlo who dared to use it for real transactions at the beginning.

In fact perhaps if Laszlo had just held onto all his BTC at the time Bitcoin might not have grown as rapidly as it has. Adoption would have been slow and there wouldn't have been a "[2026] Bitcoin Pizza Day on Bitcointalk 🍕" as a powerful symbol and the incredible organic marketing that the community does every year.

How you do know what he think is right or wrong? To even say that he regrets his decision.

Countless times in many of his interviews, he says that the didn't regret his decision because he wanted to proved that Bitcoin can be used for P2P payment. So I don't think that anyone can say that he could have made the wrong decision because we didn't know that Bitcoin will be big.

But that is history already, his name is etched in stone and we will always remember that event.

We all can not step in shoes of Laszlo and know what he thought and felt about his pizza purchase, the two pizzas purchase that is very famous but he bought more pizzas than these two. In an interview, Laszlo said that he proud of what he did and likely I guess by saying that, he implied that he did not regret.

It's what Laszlo said and we can speculate what he implied but did Laszlo tell the truth about his feeling?
We will never know about it, as what he said might possibly be exactly what felt or oppositely than what he actually felt. We will never be able to verify that information about Laszlo's feelings about the pizza trade.

He says

The pizza  wasn't expensive at the time. As he said, 10,000 btc were basically worthless and he got them for free and got a pizza

Probably all that interest got him to bitcoin and , as an early adopter, he accumulated a lot of bitcoin

Yes, interesting question and that's probably the story of most of us on this forum, or at least those who have been here for a long time.
I think for the first few years bitcoin was a kind of side hustle or hobby for most people, and few of us were actually aware of how big bitcoin would become in 10 or more years.
It's just that when you're young, you don't think too much about the future and live for the moment.
Of course, with today's wisdom, most of us wouldn't spend our "early btc" but would rather keep it until today  Grin

The pizza  wasn't expensive at the time. As he said, 10,000 btc were basically worthless and he got them for free and got a pizza

Probably all that interest got him to bitcoin and , as an early adopter, he accumulated a lot of bitcoin

That’s right. It’s obvious that it has symbolic significance and that people are engaging in wishful thinking about how much those bitcoins would be worth today, but the purchasing power at the time was what it was. It’s as if someone had sold Amazon shares many years ago to buy a house or a car and then started thinking about how much they would be worth today.

And besides, it’s not the only story like that from that era. Lots of people gambled away their bitcoins, or lost them because back then they were worth nothing and they didn’t bother to keep them safe, etc.

So the headline as such is false.
