I'm just curious why you would want to lock a post after a certain number of replies. Let's say the information given by the first 10 people is incomplete, or even false. It could give the impression that you've considered the thread resolved. Or, if the post requires more messages than usual, you'd be condemning the thread to having to wait for you to reinstate it. And if you're not around, users might continue the topic by creating new threads, which wouldn't be very organic.
That's true. Sometimes, the more the response, the more answers and options you get as the op. I feel this feature will be appropriate once the thread starter concludes they are satisfied with the replies they have got. I know that the aim is to contain spamming but sometimes there are still valuable answers after the second and third page. (Except you won't be able to go through all of them, maybe due to some of them having long wall of text.).

I think having an automated process where topics are locked (under various scenarios) is not conducive. It would probably have some form of detrimental effect on some members if they know topics they create could be locked without their consent. The creator of the thread can always lock a thread if they want to.

If any member feels that a thread should locked, the thread in question could be reported but having an automated process to lock threads seems unnecessary. There is nothing wrong with the current process therefore no need to change it.

The biggest thing is that Bitcointalk is not a social media platform or a one way Q&A place, it is an discussion forum. If after opening a topic here, it is auto locked as soon as 10 or 20 replies arrive, then how will you know that the discussion is over or that you have received a proper answer to the topic? However the opportunity for other members to have free discussion or constructive criticism  will be closed midway.
If someone find that the topic should be locked. I think a better way is to inform the topic owner (OP) via PM to lock the topic or can be added a button to request to lock the topic, so moderator can easily lock the topic

Try to read what I posted on this thread and the link, you will probably understand. I did not want that thread to be more than 10 posts because I want to create a new thread today about prediction markets. I want to make it a single thread because I know there are more new information about the markets. There is another one already as Trump sided CFTC  Grin
Picking news and sharing it here as your topics for discussion. It's your good way to spam with low quality topics and some days I saw you made about ten topics a day. Your topics can not be deleted with reports but I don't see your topics are quality at all.

It's good way to get post quota and avoid mega threads but posting this does not make your posts high quality and not different than posting in mega spam threads.

With your topic creation rate, I believe you will rank up to top topic starters.

Th3 OP will be the one to set a limit, which means   the OP of such thread won't  be  really affected apart from not getting enough replies , or reasonable discussion in some case.

On a normal day Topic can be locked by a mod if it deserves to be just like you've mentioned, that doesn'trequire consent even if such OP think other wise.
Imo, the only detrimental part Is  that conversations can be cut-off midway without any reasonable discussion yet.

We have seen in the past some threads that have been locked by their respective OPs because they did not care about conversations ending without a conclusion. A certain member that declared his account dead stating he would never return, did make a comeback and when questioned as to whether the creator of the account was in control, he locked the thread.

As for setting limits (and defining parameters), as it is all part of modifying the thread locking process I cannot support it. Others will post their views on the matter and some will support it but I cannot endorse it.
