I recently renewed a domain and was pleasantly surprised to see that payments with Bitcoin got a 3% discount.

As 3% is a common credit card fee for merchants (in my country they charge up to 7-9% approx.), so this is only a logical consequence that a Bitcoin payments saves this fee for them. But it's the first time I saw that as long as I remember. To be fair, BTC was not the only option with a discount, stablecoins and bank transfers were rewarded too. Which is also understandable.

Did you folks get some sort of special offer for a Bitcoin payment? Poll is online Smiley

I could even imagine larger discounts in some cases if merchants realize that at least some tech-related merchants could attract a loyal customer base. Above all if they accept Lightning, Ark or any other layer-2.

Merchant adoption of Lightning and Bitcoin in general would be huge, I think. We can forget about Saylor if this type of adoption continues Smiley

They are not saving money for themselves but giving it back to the customer, which is fair play and a smart move for a merchant. Although they are not waking up just now, I am sure you have also read so many topics created or posts made here that shared the same thing about how paying in BTC has not only saved them from extra fees but also given them a discount.

I have been doing some online shopping like buying some services but did not get this discount yet, but it has saved me from a lot of hassle and I consider that a discount haha. But I am glad you are happy about the discount because merchants could attract a lot more people this way if they want. Haha that was a nice one about Saylor though, but I think we are not forced to remember him, he has just become a figure at this point.

Given that Bitcoin’s value has been going down rapidly these days, if a website is still offering the option to pay with Bitcoin at a 3% discount, it means Satoshi has achieved something very big  Smiley. In fact, this should be Bitcoin’s primary purpose. It wasn’t created just for us to buy and set aside; it was introduced to serve as an alternative to credit cards, cash, and other payment methods. Bitcoin’s true purpose is to facilitate payments.

Unfortunately, accepting Bitcoin payments is prohibited in my country, so I can only see this option if I’m purchasing something digital from abroad. Still, if I had the chance, I would definitely pay with Bitcoin.

This is a smart move from the merchants apart from the three percent discount fee which applies to paying with Bitcoin as you have said. I want to look at it from the point of view that Bitcoin is gradually becoming a better option for payment because of its quick and fast payment nature. More merchants are gradually integrating Bitcoin into their payments systems because of the convience that Bitcoin offers . Bitcoin is a future payment system which is gradually taking over traditional systems that merchants we were used to.

Well Bitcoin is not entirely immune to fees, first there's a fee for sending to the merchants wallet and depending on which platform they use, there will be a fee for cashing out to another party, I can see this rivaling these 2-3% card fees but maybe it scales more favorably when the item costs more the fee stays down. What is the merchant offering this discounted fee? If you name them but don't link to them, then I'm sure many other users here would appreciate it. It's a very rare occasion to see a bitcoin discount and when you're talking about domains that cost ten dollars, that's a saving of about $0.30 - good but not exactly going to sway people necessarily.

Peer-to-peer transaction without middlemen can help lower cost, especially for international buyers, hence the discount, maybe.
That could also serve as incentive to attract loyal Bitcoin users. And any auxiliary Bitcoin system would make it even cheaper and viable for local transactions which usually cost smaller fees.

The merchants could indeed attract longterm loyal customers who are unlikely to be affected by too much policy changes if they also focus specifically on good and affordable nomad tech, gadgets, homes, foods, animals, internet/call credits, etc. But certain tech or gadgets like phone, laptop etc could be bought and registered with privacy friendly kyc alternative like Decentralized Personal Identification (anonymity-friendly) Numbers to help track users who misuse the products in very bad way

I can't even remember, i used bitcoin to buy such a long time ago that you could say that i gave them bitcoin with a huge discount. That obviously only applies in a situation where retailers would have kept it, which they never did, as they all use 3rd party services that sells it and gives fiat money to retailer instantly.

I might use stablecoins for 3% discount, but not bitcoin. BTC is currently fluctuating more in one day. So i can't even tell if i am technically getting more discount when bitcoin drops tomorrow, or am i paying more if it immediately raises 10% after purchace.

I believe so, at least whenever I pay my VPN I'll get a 10% discount if I paid with Bitcoin. Not sure if other merchants do that, but basically I can save around $0.5 per month if I paid with Bitcoin. Not sure if other countries enjoy the same discount though. Maybe the rate is lower but the incentive to use crypto exist. Can't say the same about other digital stuffs I regularly buy though. Even if they offer crypto payments discount usually happens around the same time other methods have discount, so there's no tangible encouragement to use crypto.

Since a credit card company that would normally take a cut wasn't involved in the transaction, you simply earned that percentage that would normally go to them as third party and that's the 3% discount you got.
There's no middle man in this case and this means if merchants were to adopt this method of payment, a new parallel economy will be created that is free of censorship and frictions in the medium of exchange.

I am sure you have also read so many topics created or posts made here that shared the same thing about how paying in BTC has not only saved them from extra fees but also given them a discount.
No, it's the first time I see it, at least in the last five years or so. It's possible that in the early days (2011-14) when there were some merchants who first accepted Bitcoin offered a discount though.

But then for a long time it seemed there were fewer merchants accepting Bitcoin each year. Now it seems that they're slowly coming back. Possible due to better merchant platforms.

What is the merchant offering this discounted fee? If you name them but don't link to them, then I'm sure many other users here would appreciate it.
It's Dynadot. Of course it makes a real difference only if you renew or buy several domains. But then it could lead up to an important saved amount.

I don't buy domain names and hosting, but I do remember that there are hosting and DNS providers, that accept cryptocurrency payments.
For some reason the online hosting industry is more crypto friendly than other online businesses. I've never had the chance to use a discount, when I pay with BTC, but I don't want to spend my BTC for goods and services. I also definitely don't think that "merchants are waking up" and Bitcoin is about to be widely adopted as a payment option by businesses, that weren't crypto friendly years ago. A 3% discount is close to nothing. Grin

Well its a good news that they have seen the potential of Bitcoin as a payment, and imagine its a discounted with 3%. Apparently, right now is most of the payment we have here in my country is its just an equivalent price no discount at all. Sometimes, if it's an international card even its a crypto card there is a charge of approximately 1-1.3% because of the terminal fees, which is against the law but still some stores are keep doing this kind of activity.

In my country, depending on the state, you can find very few merchants who accept payment in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but it is mostly merchants who sell tech devices, like mobile phones, laptops or Satellite Internet Services, like Starlink and other similar stuff. But i have seen a lot of their advertisements and they do not offer discounts on crypto payments, maybe that is what they need to do to encourage people that want to spend in bitcoin, because crypto is growing very fast in my country.

I have never had a discount for paying with Bitcoin Embarrassed I even used to buy in a local grocery shop with Bitcoin but I was never offered that prerogative (considering the card sales fees that the seller would save, not to mention the taxes in his case, he could have already given me a loaf of bread at least...).

But it is good to know that at least for some services they are offering such discounts, because even if they are small, they add up.

Your experience is a plus for Bitcoin adoption for payments, if more companies and stores will accept Bitcoin and go further to give discounts on direct purchase I believe that it will encourage more Bitcoin holders to be using it for payments. Unfortunately many businesses in my country don't accept Bitcoin as payment and infact aside from Bitcoin transactions in exchanges I've never spent it for payments.

I really look forward to spending my Bitcoin on anything, it would be a thrill for me, even if I don't get a discount I just want to get the feel as a Bitcoin enthusiast. I know that it is a matter of time before holders and business owners will look beyond it's volatility and holding it solely for profit to be spending and accepting it for business transactions and for payments.

Nope, I mean it is good to see that and I hope more places does it soon, but unfortunately I barely see any places accept bitcoin during these bear periods anyways and the fact that we are seeing it not be something to deal with is a bigger problem than we realize.

Because if we could have more and more places accepting bitcoin then things could be a lot better but right now that is not the case and we are not seeing that at the moment, which is the biggest problem that I am facing at the moment. With more and more vendors accepting bitcoin, it would be a thing not just invested into or traded but also could be a thing that we use instead, and that would be the ideal way for bitcoin to move forward with adoption.

I guess your merchant is trying to stimulate demand because we people love discounts..

Btw, paying with cryptocurrecies.. I have always known that price jumps up slightly because of exchange rate and uncertain markets ..
Otherwise this isn't really about waking up, it's a cheaper marketing strategy to use this strategy..

You can't get discounts unless you are buying digital products like VPNs, servers, proxies, etc. OP bought a domain that's why he could get such discounts even if the local stores in his country or in yours don't have such local stores or online stores that provide discounts on Bitcoin, as a matter of fact they don't even have it integrated as an option due to legal issues.

Merchants should use it because they save more. Steak and Shake is giving discounts to the customers who are paying in Bitcoin, they are even giving bonuses to their workers who choose to take payments in Bitcoin. They have reported their earnings have increased due to the Bitcoin payments, as before it was a burden for both parties to use cards because they deduct some fee which is as high as OP mentioned, but it saved Steak and Shake more. They even said their sales increased and their profits increased due to the money they saved from card fees.

I have not paid with bitcoin for a long time now, and I also barely buy and pay for digital services like VPN and domain, which is what I could have mostly wanted to spend my money on, but such service and offering is not just a gift to the customer; the company is also saving itself from some additional expenses while at the same time giving you, the customer, the freedom of maintaining privacy while paying for what you want.

They are not saving money for themselves but giving it back to the customer, which is fair play and a smart move for a merchant. Although they are not waking up just now, I am sure you have also read so many topics created or posts made here that shared the same thing about how paying in BTC has not only saved them from extra fees but also given them a discount.

They are actually saving themselves from the cost and also the customer some cost as well. In my country there are some online payments which you will be handling. You as the client paying will be charged a certain amount for the service fee, and the merchant also has some to settle from his end, so that Bitcoin payment option did save both client and merchant some money while they still offer some discount in return, which is a 2-win for the customer.
