It does indeed sound almost the same. Those who start a business certainly make analyses, calculations, and also speculations. The execution depends on the mindset of the business person. As there are risks in business, it indeed sounds the same as us gambling. Especially those that involve something that may be beyond our predictions.

It will be difficult to find someone who transitioned from gambling to starting a business because of the differences between the two industries. Unless the gambler became the online casino owner after a big win.
They may have the same risk factor, but gambling is mostly spending expensive money with no real assurance of returns. It's different when it comes to business, as I firmly believe that there will always be consumers. Even a rubber band can be sold with just the right marketing for it. Go for the business if I were you. It's a big step, but if you have a good idea and can foresee your future getting good at it, then it might work out. Again, it's a risk, but not as risky as gambling.

Gambling and personal business such as owning a mall doesn’t share same similarities because business doesn’t entirely depend on luck as gambling does. I meant, gambling is more difficult than having a business. In business you do not need to keep saying that you are waiting for luck to make people come buy things unlike gambling which you would be dependent on your skills and strategy while owning a business doesn’t make you to lose all your money instantly, thus, there are business which someone can also delve into and began to incur loses as they go into it. In generally, as I know business is more reliable than gambling winning as the comes when you may not expect but business you could be gaining money at every day you opened your business.

For those of you who are experienced gamblers, investors, or entrepreneurs: Do you look at business ventures through the same lens as a calculated bet? Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have transitioned from gambling to running a business or vice versa!!!
No. Gambling cannot be equated with or viewed through the same lens as entrepreneurship. Both gambling and entrepreneurship involve significant risk, but it would be very odd to view them through the same lens because, in practice, they are not the same. The same applies to investing. Gambling, entrepreneurship, and investing all share a common element—the balance between risk and opportunity—but applying the same lens to them is truly odd.

Risk Management vs. House Edge In Gambling You calculate the odds, accept the house edge, and manage your bankroll to survive variance. In Business You conduct market research, evaluate competitors, and manage your capital. However, instead of a house edge, you face market volatility, inflation, and changing consumer behavior. The Illusion of Control In Gambling Poker players rely on skill, but a bad beat can ruin a perfect strategy. Sports bettors analyze stats, but a single referee decision can spoil the bet. In Business you can have the perfect business plan, the best suppliers, and great marketing, but an unexpected economic shift can completely wipe you out...
Yeah, in both cases, you can never completely remove uncertainty, so you have to make decisions based on the information available and the probabilities you can estimate. But there is one very important difference. For example in most gambling games, the mathematical advantage is already on the casino’s side from the beginning, and the longer you keep playing, the more this advantage starts working against you. Of course, a business can also fail because of things you can’t control: an economic crisis, changes in the market, new technologies, or competitors’ actions. In my opinion, the main line between a calculated risk and pure gambling is where analysis ends and relying on luck begins. But if the decision is based only on emotions and the desire to make quick money, then it becomes much more like gambling.

At some point, I agree since both were going to risk something in order to make money but the difference is that, in business, if you really do good research and study everything, you can't never go wrong and you will even need to have a feasibility study to make sure that it could work but in gambling, no matter what study or research you've done, there's some uncertainty on it and anytime even with the lowest odds you can have, there's still a chance that you will be lose. Though, I find gambling easier to make money than business, since all you have to do is to be lucky and you'll earn but in business you need to work in order for it to work.

Business works this way exclusively in a stable economy and a rule-of-law country, where an entrepreneur is protected from raids, retroactive taxes, and administrative demands that appear out of nowhere. In that case, yes, preparation, training, and research can be considered a guarantee of a successful business, and even then, I would view these 'guarantees' skeptically, because I simply do not believe that they exist for anything at all. But if we are talking about countries where the state can twist the laws however it finds convenient and profit from corruption by squeezing businesses, then no amount of training or prior preparation will become an obstacle or a protective factor.

To start a business is full of risk, because you don't know what you mean likely meet along the line, gambling is for entertainment purpose and if you are having this same mentality, then I don't think you are under a risk that you gamble, you are doing it for fun, but if you have your expectation to earn money from gambling, you can be said to be under a risk because your chances of winning are more lower to losing.

Everything you want to do in this life has risks. Starting a business is not a win-win thing because there are also chances of failure. But the difference between gambling and starting a business is that you have some level of control over the business. Your inputs will determine how successful the business will be. However, most gambling outcomes are determined by luck. An entrepreneur might decide to increase his capital or extend his business hours just to make more profits. But in gambling, it is considered loss chasing which is dangerous. Business is mainly for profit-making and not for entertainment. But gambling is mainly designed for entertainment.

Both business and gambling have their own risks, but the risk in business is not the same as that of gambling. You can start a business and incur some losses, but there will still be some money left.
In business, you can put a pause when it is not profitable to prevent too much loss, but in gambling, you can put some money into gambling and completely lose everything. The uncertainty in gambling can't be predicted, and the risks are always around the corner. Despite the risks in business, they can still be controlled, whereas gambling is just a different matter.

That is a stupid comparison. I would never think of it that way because business is about gaining money or income while gambling is about spending money or expenses. So they cannot really be compared.
The only way both can be used and maybe result in something positive that everyone will agree with is if we are talking about starting a gambling business. That comparison you mentioned is just off.

Only newbies can gather or save plenty of money and start thinking how to use the money to gamble without achieve knowledge of gambling, because it doesn't make any sense. If you ask yourself this question, if something happen to make you to lose your capital, what do you think it will happen to your life? Many people have committed suicide just because they don't know how to face the problem that will come out next. If truly you like gambling and you want to be involve in gambling, i will advise you to use the money to establish business, because it will allow you to gather plenty money that will make you to be taking any amount of money to gamble.
You can carry out some research to know what to do when you are planning to gamble, because with the results you will get from gambling it will allow you to know how to gamble to be consistent in winning.

Yes, you have to calculate the risk that you're taking even it's with business. Just as how we gamble, we understand the risk that we're taking and if it's worth it and doable. Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?
I think that when you can see that there's clear no direction anymore, that's pure gambling. But if things as you start a business and it's still acceptable risk that you understand, still going according to your plan then you have to continue it.

There is definitely a difference between gambling and business. If you compare the two, there are risks in both. Gambling is much more risky and uncertain, but there are risks in business. If you have a proper plan and work hard, there is a high chance of success in business in the long term. Gambling is still socially considered negative by people. You cannot feel proud of it publicly as a profession, even though gambling can't be a profession, and on the other hand, business is a profession that is accepted by everyone in society. Gambling depends on luck; even if you do a lot of research and hard work, there is no guarantee of success here. But there is an opportunity to succeed in business through hard work.

I wish you the best OP, but why not run a online casino if you have the money? I said this because this is the most effective way of making money after few others, the chances of success is very high.
I don't recommend using some hard earned money to gamble, it's very possible that you will lose all that money, and if you have other effective business idea it's better than gambling.
People have make thousands of dollars from other source and wasted it all in gambling, they thought they could double the money or triple it but they failed, don't add up to that list.

Starting a business is never the same as gambling, when you want to gamble then you know that you are not making a business, rather, you are about to get entertained by playing bets, but when you are starting a business, you don't know what you are actually going to face along the way, because some businesses and unpredictable until you start them, some could drive sale while some may not depending on the conditions that is within the business environment.

Yes i do. I treated doing busines is the same as running the bet. If your business is going well, you will be succedd. If your business fail, you will go bankrupt. It's pretty similar with gambling because both have win or lose as the outcome. The only different is that in business your skill matter, while in gambling the outcome is depend on the chance and system. Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?
The risk will be on your skill, which useful to run your business compared to the random chances when you're gambling.

Business decisions come from an entrepreneur and they succeed through their own efforts and hard work. Here, someone may enter skillfully or someone may become skillful by joining the business. To be successful in business, you have to be patient and manage the business with discipline. There are many histories where many businessmen have started from zero and become successful. There are many businessmen who could not succeed even with a lot of capital. There is risk in business. There is a risk of losing money in gambling but it would not be right to compare business with gambling. Business is not a bet success from here has to be achieved through hard work.

Even if you find some similarities between a business and a gamble, the reality cannot be ignored in any way. Generally, there is risk in gambling where there is the same risk in business, but there is definitely a difference between the risk of gambling and the risk of business. If a person who has invested money in gambling wins, he can increase his bet amount, and if he loses, he will lose his capital. But in a business, a person who has lost after setting up the business has not lost the entire amount like a bet. Even if there is a small loss or a big loss, he can recover that loss later. Due to inflation or accidents, a person's business may suffer losses which are recoverable, which are certain. But in the case of gambling, a person cannot give that certainty in any way. The biggest thing is that a business can give a person more or less money consistently, but in the case of gambling, there is no such thing, there will always be uncertainty.

All of your comparisons are superficial, you can't just say starting a business and gambling are more or less the same, that kind of mentality is what pushes people to abandon their chances to start good businesses and spend all they have on gambling instead, telling themselves there are the same thing, if you owned your own business then you wouldn't have this mindset about owning a business and gambling being similar. This thinking pattern is flawed, it's better you change it.
Yep. As a matter of fact, most gamblers are never successful business owners, and vice versa. Gambling is addictive; running a business is not. Gambling is supposed to be a stress buster because when we're gambling, we feel relaxed (unless we're gambling too much). Starting a business is not easy, but it serves you well in the long-run. While gambling is easy and fun but never worth it in the long run, unless your sole purpose is to gamble for fun, which is totally fine. It's crazy to think that people have started to compare running businesses with gambling because those are exactly the opposite of each other. I don't remember anyone who said they made money with gambling in the long run.
